Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ethnic mosaic of North-East India offers a fascinating area of academic discourse which needs to be examined for a clear understanding of the elements of separatism or integration which necessarily carry socio-political ramifications. It attempts to assess the contours of ethno-cultural plurality in the social dynamics of the region as well as about its history, geography, economic and concurrent political scenario fogging with insurgency and terrorism. To be more precise, it deals with the land, the people, history, economy, cultural heritage, ethnical composition, with a socio-political relevance of each state of the North-East India. The present book should be of interest to students, scholars, journalists and policy makers interested in the study of ethnic conflicts, politics, insurgency and identity politics. It should be an indispensable reference tool for students of Political Science, Sociology, History and Anthropology.

Book Displaced by Development

Download or read book Displaced by Development written by Lyla Mehta and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2009-01-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation is a rare attempt to apply gender analysis to development-induced-displacement and resettlement in the Indian context. It brings together leading scholar-activists, researchers and contributors from people’s movements to critique and draw attention to the injustices perpetrated during such processes. Facing up to the need to focus specifically on how displacement and resettlement affect social groups differently with regard to axes such as gender, class, caste and tribe, the articles show that disenfranchised groups are deemed dispensable and tend to be affected the most, and that women and children among them suffer disproportionately. Displaced by Development: Confronting Marginalisation and Gender Injustice argues that without differentiated analyses and programmes, displacement and resettlement will continue to intensify and perpetuate gender and social injustice. This work will hold the interest of a wide readership and will be a crucial source of information for those working in the areas of Gender and Social Policy, Economics and Development Studies, Sociology of Gender, Environment and Development, Migration Studies, Anthropology, and South Asian studies. It will also interest policy makers in development agencies, activists and non-governmental organisations concerned with forced displacement and migration issues.

Book Handbook of Research on New Dimensions of Gender Mainstreaming and Women Empowerment

Download or read book Handbook of Research on New Dimensions of Gender Mainstreaming and Women Empowerment written by Kuruvilla, Moly and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, women are facing social, economic, and cultural barriers impeding their autonomy and agency. Accelerated women empowerment programs often fail to attain their targets as envisaged by the policymakers due to a variety of reasons, with the most prominent being the deep-rooted cultural norms ingrained within society. In the era of globalization, empowerment of women demands new approaches and strategies that encourage the mainstreaming of gender equality as a societal norm. The Handbook of Research on New Dimensions of Gender Mainstreaming and Women Empowerment is a critical scholarly publication that examines global gender issues and new strategies for the promotion of women empowerment and gender mainstreaming in various spheres of women’s lives, including education and ICT, economic participation, health and sexuality, mental health, aging, law and judiciary, leadership, and decision making. It provides a comprehensive coverage of all major gender issues with novel ideas on gender mainstreaming being contributed by men and women authors from multidisciplinary backgrounds. Gender perspective and intersectional approach in the discourses make this handbook a unique contribution to the scholarship of social sciences and humanities. The book provides new theoretical inputs and practical directions to academicians, sociologists, social workers, psychologists, managers, lawyers, policy makers, and government officials in their efforts at gender mainstreaming. With a wide range of conceptual richness, this handbook is an excellent reference guide to students and researchers in programs pertaining to gender/women's studies, cultural studies, economics, sociology, social work, medicine, law, and management.

Book Women Poverty and Productivity in India

Download or read book Women Poverty and Productivity in India written by Lynn Bennett and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1992 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication considers the effects of gender on access within the family and beyond. It is based on a more detailed study of women's involvement in key sectors of the Indian economy, the returns they are getting, and the critical constraints they face in increasing their access to, and productivity in, these sectors. Three fundamental observations emerge. First, women are vital productive workers in India's national economy. Second, the poorer the family, the greater its dependence on women's economic productivity. The third observation is that, as a society, India invests far less in women workers than in its working men. India's women also have less access than do men to health services and nutrition. These gender based asymmetrics are contributing factors in India's high child mortality rates and persistently high birth rates.

Book Women in Agriculture Their status and role

Download or read book Women in Agriculture Their status and role written by R. K. Punia and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1991 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first specialised volume with a holistic approach dealing with the most vulnerable and neglected section of workers in unorganised sector of agriculture. Tracing women's role and status in the historical perspective, existing situational analysis and making future projections are the main sub-themes discussed threadbare. Women workers in different agro-ecological and types of farming have been analysed by various scholars. Papers on technology and women bring out, among other things, a situational analysis, work conditions in home and farm, wages, bearing on her farm employment and participation. Prospective role and status have been projected in the changing techno-economic context that warrants about the displacement of women workers in developing agriculture. In the series, this volume focusses on the issues of educational problems of the rural women in general and specialised training needs, facilities available and utilization of these in particular for providing them appropriate place in the prospective agriculture. Training needs of different groups in different agroclimatic and cultural contexts have been compiled at one place. Multiplicity of institutions has certainly benefited women fold but mushrooming of voluntary agencies is not desirable in spite of the best performance of voluntary agencies. What role different institutional structures have played in the education and training of women is discussed at length and future course of involvements is debated. Different agricultural development strategies adopted since independence have been critically examined for assessing the place of women in them and urgent action needed to meet the future challenges.
