Book Economic Modelling at the Bank of England

Download or read book Economic Modelling at the Bank of England written by G. B. Henry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. S. FLEMMING The Bank of England's role as a leading central bank involves both formal and informal aspects. At a formal level it is an adviser to HM Government, whilst at an informal level it is consulted by domestic and overseas institutions for advice on many areas of economic interest. Such advice must be grounded in an understanding of the workings of the domestic and international economy-a task which becomes ever more difficult with the pace of change both in the economy and in the techniques which are used by professional economists to analyse such changes. The Bank's economists are encouraged to publish their research whenever circumstances permit, whether in refereed journals or in other ways. In particular, we make it a rule that the research underlying the Bank's macroeconometric model, to which outside researchers have access through the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) macromodelling bureau, should be adequately explained and documented in published form. This volume expands the commitment to make research which is undertaken within the Economics Division of the Bank of England widely available. Included here are chapters which illustrate the breadth of interests which the Bank seeks to cover. Some of the research is, as would be expected, directly related to the specification of the Bank's model, but other aspects are also well represented.

Book Economic Models at the Bank of England

Download or read book Economic Models at the Bank of England written by Peter F. Westaway and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1999, the Bank of England published Economic models at the Bank of England, a book that described the economic modelling tools that help the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) in its work. It was made clear at the time that economic models should not be thought of as fixed in form or content, and that model development is a continual process. An update to the book was published in September 2000 covering model developments over the past 18 months, particularly in relation to the Bank's main macroeconometric modelling tool. The update, while giving details of the core macroeconometric model, also refers to other work within the Bank that has added to the range of models used by the MPC.

Book Agent Based Modelling in Economics

Download or read book Agent Based Modelling in Economics written by Lynne Hamill and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agent-based modelling in economics Lynne Hamill and Nigel Gilbert, Centre for Research in Social Simulation (CRESS), University of Surrey, UK New methods of economic modelling have been sought as a result of the global economic downturn in 2008.This unique book highlights the benefits of an agent-based modelling (ABM) approach. It demonstrates how ABM can easily handle complexity: heterogeneous people, households and firms interacting dynamically. Unlike traditional methods, ABM does not require people or firms to optimise or economic systems to reach equilibrium. ABM offers a way to link micro foundations directly to the macro situation. Key features: Introduces the concept of agent-based modelling and shows how it differs from existing approaches. Provides a theoretical and methodological rationale for using ABM in economics, along with practical advice on how to design and create the models. Each chapter starts with a short summary of the relevant economic theory and then shows how to apply ABM. Explores both topics covered in basic economics textbooks and current important policy themes; unemployment, exchange rates, banking and environmental issues. Describes the models in pseudocode, enabling the reader to develop programs in their chosen language. Supported by a website featuring the NetLogo models described in the book. Agent-based Modelling in Economics provides students and researchers with the skills to design, implement, and analyze agent-based models. Third year undergraduate, master and doctoral students, faculty and professional economists will find this book an invaluable resource.

Book The New Bank of England Quarterly Model

Download or read book The New Bank of England Quarterly Model written by Andrew Holder and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bank of England has developed a new macroeconomic model to help prepare the Monetary Policy Committee's quarterly economic projections. The new model does not represent a change in the Committee's view of how the economy works or of the role of monetary policy. Rather, recent advances in economic understanding and computational power have been used to develop a macroeconomic model with a more clearly specified and coherent economic structure than in previous models used by the Committee. This article provides an overview of the new model and includes some simple simulations to illustrate its properties.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of Central Banking

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of Central Banking written by David G. Mayes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic influence of central banks has received ever more attention given their centrality during the financial crises that led to the Great Recession, strains in the European Union, and the challenges to the Euro. The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of Central Banking reflects the state of the art in the theory and practice and covers a wide range of topics that will provide insight to students, scholars, and practitioners. As an up to date reference of the current and potential challenges faced by central banks in the conduct of monetary policy and in the search for the maintenance of financial system stability, this Oxford Handbook covers a wide range of essential issues. The first section provides insights into central bank governance, the differing degrees of central bank independence, and the internal dynamics of their decision making. The next section focuses on questions of whether central banks can ameliorate fiscal burdens, various strategies to affect monetary policy, and how the global financial crisis affected the relationship between the traditional focus on inflation targeting and unconventional policy instruments such as quantitative easing (QE), foreign exchange market interventions, negative interest rates, and forward guidance. The next two sections turn to central bank communications and management of expectations and then mechanisms of policy transmission. The fifth part explores the challenges of recent developments in the economy and debates about the roles central banks should play, focusing on micro- and macro-prudential arguments. The implications of recent developments for policy modeling are covered in the last section. The breadth and depth enhances understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing central banks.

Book A Model of the Lender of Last Resort

Download or read book A Model of the Lender of Last Resort written by Mr.Haizhou Huang and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper develops a model of the lender of last resort. It provides an analytical basis for “too big too fail” and a rationale for “constructive ambiguity”. Key results are that if contagion (moral hazard) is the main concern, the Central Bank (CB) will have an excessive (little) incentive to rescue banks and the resulting equilibrium risk level is high (low). When both contagion and moral hazard are jointly analyzed, the CB’s incentives to rescue are only slightly weaker than with contagion alone. The CB’s optimal policy may be non-monotonic in bank size.
