Book excerpt: Industry Under Economic Liberalization analyses the structural change in and growth of the Indian electronics industry, especially after the introduction of liberalized economic policies in the early 1990s. Drawing from this experience, K. J. Joseph highlights the implications of the market-oriented policies for Indian industry in general. He then proceeds to study changes in the market structure consequent to the reduction or elimination of institutionally set barriers. This analysis is undertaken in the Structure-Conduct-Performance framework taking the case of the computer industry. An unusual feature of the book is an examination of regional market segmentation and its impact on the performance of firms. This book was released on 2000 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1991 marked an important watershed in the economic history of post-Independent India. The country went through a severe economic crisis triggered by a serious balance of payments situation. The crisis was converted into an opportunity to introduce some fundamental changes in the content and approach to economic policy. The purpose of this book is to detail the structural reform process undertaken by India and to evaluate its results. In the post-liberalization period, the country has moved to a higher growth path. Objective conditions exist for the economy to grow at a sustained rate of seven per cent. The slow growth in agriculture and the consequent impact of a slower decline in poverty reduction are areas of concern.

Book Liberalization and Development

Download or read book Liberalization and Development written by Deepak Nayyar and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of published and unpublished essays authored by the eminent scholar Deepak Nayyar. The essays written over a period of two decades, focus on liberalization and development of underdeveloped and developing countries. The themes explored range from macroeconomicsthrough industrialization to development with reference to the changed context shaped by liberalization. The essays are grouped in four thematic clusters. The first part is on economic theory, contextualized in developing countries. It relates macroeconomic theory and policy to the institutional setting and explores alternative perspectives. The second part is on development, in a world that has been transformed by markets and globalization. It alsoexplores the consequences for public policies and for employment. The third part is on industrialization. It begins with the international context to consider the debate on industrialization in India which is relevant for other late-industrializers. The last part is on liberalization. It evaluatesthe Indian experience with stabilization, adjustment, and reform. The volume situates economic liberalization in India in its wider political and historical context. In a world where much of development economics is concerned with micro-theoretic analysis, these essays provide a macroeconomicanalysis of development. The book provides a rich blend of theory and policy from a heterodox perspective.

Book Globalization and Poverty

Download or read book Globalization and Poverty written by Ann Harrison and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the percentage of the world’s population living on less than a dollar a day has been cut in half. How much of that improvement is because of—or in spite of—globalization? While anti-globalization activists mount loud critiques and the media report breathlessly on globalization’s perils and promises, economists have largely remained silent, in part because of an entrenched institutional divide between those who study poverty and those who study trade and finance. Globalization and Poverty bridges that gap, bringing together experts on both international trade and poverty to provide a detailed view of the effects of globalization on the poor in developing nations, answering such questions as: Do lower import tariffs improve the lives of the poor? Has increased financial integration led to more or less poverty? How have the poor fared during various currency crises? Does food aid hurt or help the poor? Poverty, the contributors show here, has been used as a popular and convenient catchphrase by parties on both sides of the globalization debate to further their respective arguments. Globalization and Poverty provides the more nuanced understanding necessary to move that debate beyond the slogans.

Book Financial Liberalization Development and Industrial Growth

Download or read book Financial Liberalization Development and Industrial Growth written by D.H. Manjappa and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development economists have long recognized the role of the financial system in the process of economic development. Financial institutions and markets anticipate future growth opportunities, were financial development tends to accelerate growth through new firm formation, increasing access to external financing and boost firm growth. Using Industry level time series data, following Rajan and Zingales (1998), methodology we empirically examined the links between financial sector development, financial structure and industry growth for the post-reform period. The results suggest a positive influence of financial development (FD), and negative influence of financial structure (FS), on the rate of growth of value added of the Industries. One of the contributions of this study is the examination of the influence of industry competitiveness (export intensity and import intensity) and financial liberalization on industry growth where export oriented industries are relatively more dependent on external finance for their growth. Regarding liberalization the results doesn't show any direct effect on industry growth in value added.

Book From License Raj to Market Forces

Download or read book From License Raj to Market Forces written by Kwok Tong Soo and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores the relationship between factor endowments, technology and industrial structure, using a panel data-set of Indian industries across states, industries and time. Factor endowments and technology are found to be significantly related to industry shares, and this is robust to controlling for the slow adjustment of industrial structure. I also consider the impact of the liberalization of the Indian economy beginning in 1985 and 1991 on the relationship between these variables. While industrial structure is always positively related to technological advantage, factor endowments play an increasingly significant role after liberalization.

Book The Pattern of Industrial Location in India Under Liberalization

Download or read book The Pattern of Industrial Location in India Under Liberalization written by Dilip Saikia and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic liberalization policy initiated since the early 1991 has made large-scale delicensing of industry and changes in the industrial location policies, and thus, curtailed the role of the state as industrial owner and location regulator. With the increasing dominance of private sector in industrialization under liberalization it is expected that industries will be more spatially concentrated in the leading industrial regions. However, the neoclassical principle suggests that in the long run "divergence is followed by convergence". This is in contrast with the theory that raises the question about the regional industrial development in India under the two policy regimes. The main objective of the paper is to examine what happened to the location concentration of industries across the states in the post-liberalization period in India, and thus, understands the influence of economic liberalization on industrial location. This has been examined with the employment data of organized manufacturing sector for the pre- and post-reform periods by: first, looking at the trend of regional concentration of industries over the years, and second, looking at the regional industrial structure and the industrial diversification of regions during the pre- and post reforms periods. The findings suggest that concentration of industries has increased in the post liberalization period in India and the tendency to catch up the industrially developed states is hardly seen among the backward states.
