Book Canadian American Economic Relations

Download or read book Canadian American Economic Relations written by Kent State University. Graduate School of Management and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-10-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together leading academic experts from the U.S. and Canada to explore the crucial economic relationship between their two countries--each of whom is the other's largest trading partner. The essays, all specially written for this study, provide an integrated, balanced examination of the strengths and weaknesses inherent in the relationship and discuss reasons for the increasing difficulties experienced in the past few years. An indispensable supplement for courses in international business and regional economics, the study will also provide economists, political scientists, and environmentalists with important new insights into this most critical relationship. Following an overview of the economic structure of the two nations, the contributors focus upon three general areas of Canadian-American economic relations. The section on natural resources and related issues presents an up-to-date view of energy and environmental considerations and explores shared problems of agricultural competitiveness. Turning to a discussion of trade issues, the contributors analyze the effects of the October 1987 accord, address the impact of the U.S. balance of payments position on Canadian economics, and examine ways in which each country can expand its international trade. Finally, a group of essays on taxes, financial markets, and bilateral investment offers an in-depth treatment of issues such as U.S. direct investment in Canadian manufacturing, the development of an integrated North American venture capital market, and investment patters. Numerous tables and figures amplify the discussions.

Book Canada Can Compete

Download or read book Canada Can Compete written by Joseph R. D'Cruz and published by IRPP. This book was released on 1985 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the back cover: Canada can compete in international markets, but not, the authors contend, under the present national economic strategy. Policies that redistribute income and allocate resources through government fiat have weakended Canada's ability to transform its manufacturing sector to meet the new competititve challenges. D'Cruz and Fleck compare the performance of seventy-one Canadian industries from 1967 to 1981 with industries in Japan, the United States, Britain and France. To enhance the competitiveness of Canadian manufacturing, the authors propose a differential industrial strategy, one that emphasizes growth and development. Government, they say, must play a "hands-off" role in Canada's market economy, limiting itself to establishing the rules of the game. The authors recommend, in addition, macro-economic policies that would reduce the federal deficit, restrain wages for public servants, preserve low differentials between Canadian and American interest rates, and maintain the Canadian dollar at 70 cents U.S.

Book United States Arctic Interests

Download or read book United States Arctic Interests written by W.E. Westermeyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elliot L. Richardson The United States is finally awakening to the fact that it has a major stake in the future of the Arctic. Recognition of the national importance of the Arctic has been slow in coming despite the resource wealth that Arctic Alaska has thus far yielded. Although the United States has had strategic interests in the Arctic since World War II and active oil and gas interests there since the discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay in 1968, its interest in the Arctic has been low in comparison with that of its Arctic neighbors, Canada and the Soviet Union. What has been described by some as an attitude of neglect toward the Arctic is now changing. The notion of change has become central in most current discussions about the future of the Arctic. It is apparent that the Arctic region is entering a period of greatly accelerated economic, social, strategic, and is political change. The driving force behind the changes taking place resource development activity, and although the present scale of this activity is not inconsequential, it is small in comparison to its projected growth in the next two decades. In short, the Arctic is about to come alive. However, knowledge of the Arctic and experience in the Arctic is comparatively limited. Moreover, competing interests and differing val ues exist among national groups and between countries in the Arctic, just as they do in the lower latitudes.
