Book Economic Importance of Sportfishing in the Matanuska Susitna Borough

Download or read book Economic Importance of Sportfishing in the Matanuska Susitna Borough written by Stephen Colt and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic importance of sport fishing in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough was estimated using data for 2007 from a recent major study conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game based on an angler survey (the summary version was titled "Economic impacts and contributions of sportfishing in Alaska, 2007 report"). The authors allocated a portion of the economic effects for the Southcentral region to the Borough based on relative numbers of Southcentral angler days that occurred within the Borough boundary. The estimates include a range of results because it is not possible to say with certainty how much of the total reported spending on things like boats, cabins, or food is due exclusively to sport fishing. Also, angler spending patterns in the Borough may be different from overall Southcentral patterns.

Book excerpt: In early 2007, a survey of Alaska saltwater anglers was implemented to collect information on saltwater fishing participation, effort, and preferences of resident and nonresident anglers, focusing on their activities in the 2006 fishing season. The survey was administered to three distinct groups of anglers for which separate survey instruments were developed: non-residents, residents of Southeast Alaska, and all other Alaska residents. This report describes the development, content, and structure of the three survey versions, their implementation, and a summary of the data. The summary highlights several differences between the different angler groups and their saltwater fishing behavior, in particular with respect to where they fish, what species are harvested (caught and retained), trip expenditures, and modes of fishing.

Book North Pacific Temperate Rainforests

Download or read book North Pacific Temperate Rainforests written by Gordon Orians and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Pacific temperate rainforest, stretching from southern Alaska to northern California, is the largest temperate rainforest on earth. This book provides a multidisciplinary overview of key issues important for the management and conservation of the northern portion of this rainforest, located in northern British Columbia and southeastern Alaska. This region encompasses thousands of islands and millions of acres of relatively pristine rainforest, providing an opportunity to compare the ecological functioning of a largely intact forest ecosystem with the highly modified ecosystems that typify most of the world's temperate zone. The book examines the basic processes that drive the dynamic behavior of such ecosystems and considers how managers can use that knowledge to sustainably manage the rainforest and balance ecosystem integrity with human use. Together, the contributors offer a broad understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by scientists, managers, and conservationists in the northern portion of the North Pacific rainforest that will be of interest to conservation practitioners seeking to balance economic sustainability and biodiversity conservation across the globe.
