The rapid pace of change in the healthcare industry is creating turbulence for just about everyone. For consumers, affordable access to quality healthcare is an issue of primary importance. For employers, health benefits have grown to be an alarmingly large component of their compensation packages. For physicians and other healthcare providers, practice management has become increasingly demanding. Complexity is the rule, thanks to government regulations and insurer requirements, the expansion of technology in everything from diagnosis to records, and the desire of policymakers and others to have a say in how healthcare is delivered and to whom. The Business of Healthcare provides Rx to these and other challenges in three volumes: Volume 1: Practice Management Volume 2: Leading Healthcare Organizations Volume 3: Improving Systems of Care. Each volume features commentary and insights from leaders in the healthcare industry, including physicians, attorneys, administrators, educators, and business consultants. The result: a landmark set filled with provocative analysis and practical recommendations destined to improve the delivery of healthcare. The Business of Healthcare presents ideas and information that until now have been sequestered in a variety of professional journals and books, in isolation from each other. For the first time, healthcare professionals, consumers, scholars, students, and policymakers alike will have access to the same body of information about a critical sector of the economy-one that represents 15 percent of the U.S. national GDP, consumes 10 percent of federal government spending, and employs twelve million people. This three-volume set will address the current debates that are determining the future course of the industry. Volume 1: Practice Management: Physicians are beginning to realize that, in addition to providing health care, they are owners and managers of multi-million dollar enterprises. Unfortunately, most have not received formal training in the skills needed to operate such a business. In this volume, experts will present practical advice for physicians (as well as their practice managers and staff) to improve operations. Topics include: *The opportunities and challenges of solo practice. *The logistics of joining and leaving a physician practice. *Performance management in physician practices. *Creating a culture of accountability in physician practices. *Managing difficult and disruptive physicians. *Developing and promoting a physician practice. *Internet marketing of physician practices. *The potential benefits and implementation roadblocks of pay for performance. *Accounts receivable management in hospital and physician practices. *The future of the physician practice. Volume 2: Leading Healthcare Organizations: Whether running their own practice or working as a part of a larger organization, health professionals are being called upon to provide leadership—something more important than ever in health care, where some sectors of the industry are in turmoil, while others are being transformed entirely. This volume will offer insights into the changing role of leadership throughout an organization, and describe how health professionals can exert their influence to effect positive change. Topics covered include: *Perspectives on leading complex healthcare delivery systems. *Mending the gap between practicing physicians and hospital executives. *The physician's role on the hospital board, and a blueprint for success. *The impact of biotechnology advances on healthcare delivery. *The impact of informatics on healthcare delivery. *The next frontier in addressing clinical hospital supply costs. *Liability risk management: Saving money and relationships. *Pastoral medicine: The impact of pastoral care. *The role of complementary and alternative medicine in healthcare today. Volume 3: Improving Systems of Care : This volume explores the current state of health care, and it describes the critical issues that must be resolved in the short run and the long run to ensure that the industry provides the value that the public both demands and deserves. Topics include: *Quality in healthcare: concepts and practice. *Adapting proven aviation safety tools to healthcare: Improving healthcare by changing the safety culture. *Introduction to healthcare information technology. *Market dynamics and financing strategies in the development of medical technologies. *An innovative service delivery model for specialized care. *The impact of healthcare on the US economy. *Improving systems of care: a patient's perspective. *The cost of end-of-life care. *Building the bridge between business and medicine. Better, more efficient healthcare is not just possible but needed more than ever. The Business of Health Care will help lead the way toward a healthier, happier society.

This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health spending continues to grow faster than the economy in most OECD countries. In 2010, the OECD published a study of strategies to increase value for money in health care, in which pay for performance (P4P) was identified as an innovative tool to improve health system efficiency in several OECD countries. However, evidence that P4P increases value for money, boosts quality of processes in health care, or improves health outcomes is limited. This book explores the many questions surrounding P4P such as whether the potential power of P4P has been over-sold, or whether the disappointing results to date are more likely rooted in problems of design and implementation or inadequate monitoring and evaluation. The book also examines the supporting systems and process, in addition to incentives, that are necessary for P4P to improve provider performance and to drive and sustain improvement. The book utilises a substantial set of case studies from 12 OECD countries to shed light on P4P programs in practice.Featuring both high and middle income countries, cases from primary and acute care settings, and a range of both national and pilot programmes, each case study features: Analysis of the design and implementationdecisions, including the role of stakeholders Critical assessment of objectives versus results Examination of the of 'net' impacts, includingpositive spillover effects and unintended consequences The detailed analysis of these 12 case studies together with the rest of this critical text highlight the realities of P4P programs and their potential impact on the performance of health systems in a diversity of settings. As a result, this book provides critical insights into the experience to date with P4P and how this tool may be better leveraged to improve health system performance and accountability. This title is in the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies Series.

This book was released on 2022-11-20 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government of Aceh Province in Indonesia has established the Social Health Insurance (SHI) called Jaminan Kesehatan Aceh (JKA) in 2006 that provide health coverage to all 4.6 million population of the province. Fee-for-service was initially used as the provider payment method in the programme until 2013. In 2014, in line with the National Health Insurance of Indonesia (Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional JKN), INA-CBG (Indonesia Case-Based Group) casemix system was adopted by JKA to replace the Fee-for-Service method. This book presents outcome of the evaluation done using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods on the implementation of JKA programme. The quantitative study was conducted to assess income of three selected hospitals (Type B, C and D) reimbursed using INA-CBG groups covering more than 17,000 cases. Quantitative data analysis revealed that overall, the hospitals received 32.4% higher income when reimbursed with casemix system (INA-CBG) as compared to fee-for-service. Type D hospital is the biggest gainer with 81.0% increase in income. In conclusion, the use of Casemix (INA-CBG) as a prospective payment method has benefitted the hospitals a lot. It is hope that additional resources gained through this programme will allow the hospitals to provide optimum care to the population.

Download or read book The Acute Management of Surgical Disease written by Martin D. Zielinski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emergency General Surgery has become a cornerstone of Acute Care Surgery over the past decade. Once the scope of community general surgeons, the growing complexity of patients with acute surgical diseases has increasingly driven their care to tertiary referral centers. The aging population confounds this problem further as these patients present with more complex comorbidities, life-threatening physiology, and progressively severe anatomic disease severity. To ensure better outcomes, the practice has evolved to focus on evidence-based practice management guidelines in order to standardize care and optimize outcomes. The purpose of this text is to be a comprehensive volume for patients with acute surgical diseases. There will be three sections, each comprised of multiple chapters. The first section will be a comprehensive analysis of the background of Emergency General Surgery. The goal of this section will be to provide the reader background into the acute surgical practice and to introduce the reader to the important concepts discussed in the remainder of the textbook. The second section will be the largest and will discuss specific acute surgical diseases. Individual chapters will outline the diagnostic approach, current treatment standards, operative approaches, and expected outcomes with an emphasis on practice management guideline implementation into practice. As acute surgical diseases and surgical critical care are integral to each other, the last section will be Critical Care for the Acute Care Surgeon. These topics will focus on the critical care concepts essential to surgeons who care for acute diseases. This comprehensive text is targeted to any surgeon who takes emergency call for any of the listed diseases including community and referral general and vascular surgeons. In addition, this would be an excellent resource for all general surgery residents. Lastly, this would also serve as a resource to intensivists who care for acute surgical patients.
