Book Protection of Built Environment Against Earthquakes

Download or read book Protection of Built Environment Against Earthquakes written by Matjaž Dolšek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-16 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current knowledge and state-of-the-art developments in topics related to the seismic performance and risk assessment of different types of structures and building stock are addressed in the book, with emphasis on probabilistic methods. The first part addresses the global risk components, as well as seismic hazard and ground motions, whereas the second, more extensive part presents recent advances in methods and tools for the seismic performance and risk assessment of structures. The book contains examples of steel, masonry and reinforced concrete buildings, as well as some examples related to various types of infrastructure, such as bridges and concrete gravity dams. The book's aim is to make a contribution towards the mitigation of seismic risk by presenting advanced methods and tools which can be used to achieve well-informed decision-making, this being the key element for the future protection of the built environment against earthquakes. Audience: This book will be of interest to researchers, postgraduate students and practicing engineers working in the fields of natural hazards, earthquake, structural and geotechnical engineering, and computational mechanics, but it may also be attractive to other experts working in the fields related to social and economic impact of earthquakes.

Book Improved Seismic Monitoring Improved Decision Making

Download or read book Improved Seismic Monitoring Improved Decision Making written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-01-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved Seismic Monitoringâ€"Improved Decision-Making, describes and assesses the varied economic benefits potentially derived from modernizing and expanding seismic monitoring activities in the United States. These benefits include more effective loss avoidance regulations and strategies, improved understanding of earthquake processes, better engineering design, more effective hazard mitigation strategies, and improved emergency response and recovery. The economic principles that must be applied to determine potential benefits are reviewed and the report concludes that although there is insufficient information available at present to fully quantify all the potential benefits, the annual dollar costs for improved seismic monitoring are in the tens of millions and the potential annual dollar benefits are in the hundreds of millions.

Book Seismic Analysis and Design Using the Endurance Time Method Volume II

Download or read book Seismic Analysis and Design Using the Endurance Time Method Volume II written by Homayoon Estekanchi and published by Momentum Press. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach to seismic assessment of structures called endurance time method (ETM) is developed. ETM is a dynamic analysis procedure in which intensifying dynamic excitations are used as the loading function. ETM provides many unique benefits in seismic assessment and design of structures and is a response history-based procedure. ETM considerably reduces the computational effort needed in typical response history analyses. Conceptual simplicity makes ETM a great tool for preliminary response history analysis of almost any dynamic structural system. Most important areas of application of ETM are in the fields of seismic design optimization, value-based seismic design, and experimental studies. This book is aimed to serve as a coherent source of information for students, engineers, and researchers who want to familiarize themselves with the concepts and put the concepts into practice.

Book Earthquake Analysis and Design of Industrial Structures and Infra structures

Download or read book Earthquake Analysis and Design of Industrial Structures and Infra structures written by Indrajit Chowdhury and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 1050 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite significant development in earthquake analysis and design in the last 50 years or more, different structures related to industry, infra structure and human habitats get destroyed with monotonic regularity under strong motion earthquake. Even the recent earthquake in Mexico in September 2017 killed a number of people and destroyed national assets amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. Careful evaluation of the technology reveals that, despite significant development in earthquake engineering, most of the books that are available on the market for reference are primarily focused towards buildings and framed type structures. It is accepted that during an earthquake it is buildings that get destroyed most and has been the biggest killers of human life. Yet, there are a number of structures like retaining walls, water tanks, Bunkers, silos, tall chimneys, bridge piers etc that are equally susceptible to earthquake, and if damaged can cause serious trouble and great economic distress. Unfortunately, many of these systems are analyzed by techniques that are too simplified, unrealistic/obsolete or nothing is done about them, ignoring completely the seismic effects, as no guidelines exist for their analysis/design (like seismic analysis of counterfort retaining walls or dynamic pressures on bunker walls etc.). This highly informative book addresses many of these items for which there exists a significant gap in technology and yet remain an important life line of considerable commercial significance. The book is an outcome of authors' academic research and practice across the four continents (USA, Europe, Africa and Asia) in the last thirty two years, where many of these technologies have been put in practice, that got tested against real time earthquakes. All methods presented herein have been published previously in peer reviewed research journals and international conferences of repute before being put to practice. Professionals working in international EPC and consulting engineering firms, graduates taking advanced courses in earthquake engineering, doctoral scholars pursuing research in earthquake engineering in the area of dynamic soil structure interaction (DSSI) and advanced under graduates wanting to self-learn and update themselves on earthquake analysis and design are greatly benefited from this book.

Book Seismic Risk and Engineering Decisions

Download or read book Seismic Risk and Engineering Decisions written by Cinna Lomnitz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic Risk and Engineering Decisions attempts to bridge the gap in decision making between earthquake characteristics and structural behavior. The book begins by providing the background on earthquake generation and characteristics. It reviews the present state of matters in seismicity assessment and treats uncertainties explicitly. The impact of earthquakes on large bodies of water and structures is also discussed. These discussions set the stage for the final part of the book, which deals with the principles and implications of seismic design decision analysis. The book also delves into the selection of instruments for seismological research and engineering applications, with emphasis on widely used conventional seismological equipment. This book is intended to help experienced consulting engineers in assessing seismic risk and making rational decisions when locating and designing important engineering works and when drafting building codes and land use regulations. It will also provide advanced students of engineering with bases for benefiting from his future experience.
