Book Economic Feasibility and Risk of Using Prescribed Extreme Fire as an Invasive Brush Management Tool in Texas

Download or read book Economic Feasibility and Risk of Using Prescribed Extreme Fire as an Invasive Brush Management Tool in Texas written by Dustin Bruce Van Liew and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This component of the Conservation Innovation Grants Summer Burning project evaluates the economic feasibility of using prescribed fire that exceeds the current Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) technical standards as a rangeland restoration practice on privately owned land in Texas. This study has four objectives: (1) Evaluate the economic effectiveness of using prescribed extreme burns as a rangeland restoration tool compared to other rangeland restoration strategies. (2) Provide economic research results that will facilitate a review of the technical standards, specification, and potential policy changes by the NRCS with respect to the use of prescribed extreme burning. (3) Assess economic effects of extreme fire when used in combination with other treatment practices over a 20 year planning horizon. (4) Through modeling, forecasting, and simulation assess the risk associated with the use of extreme prescribed fire, with respect to weather (rainfall) conditions. The research covers four contiguous counties in each of three eco-regions in Texas: Rolling Plains, Edwards Plateau, and the South Texas Plains. Focus group meetings with landowners and NRCS/Extension personnel were held in each region to obtain preliminary information including common rangeland uses, most problematic invasive brush species, and the most commonly used treatment methods and associated costs. The primary invasive species in each region include: Rolling Plains 0́3 Prickly Pear (Opuntia phaecantha); Edwards Plateau 0́3 Redberry and Ashe Juniper (Juniperus ashei Buchh. And J. pinchotii Sudw., respectively); South Texas Plains 0́3 Huisache (Acacia smallii Isely). Mesquite (Prosopis glandulsa Torr.) was identified as a common invasive brush species across all three regions. When extreme fire was compared to the most commonly used invasive brush treatments, assuming the treatment was instituted in year one, it was economically superior in all cases and feasible (Net Present Value> 0 and Benefit/Cost Ratio>1) in all but two cases. The inclusion of forecasted rainfall figures with the combination of using the most commonly used brush treatment with extreme fire proved to substantially reduce the risk of instituting the treatment regimes. The probability distribution of NPVs was significantly smaller when treatment practices were spread over ten years and parcels than when treatment was restricted to the first year and whole ranch.

Book Prescribed Burning for Brushland Management

Download or read book Prescribed Burning for Brushland Management written by Charles J. Scifres and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Texas Example is a great reference tool for anyone interested in the mechanics, costs and benefits to prescribed burning on rangelands. Although this book is best suited for Texas, as this is where much of the study was conducted, it is a great reference tool to have on your shelf. The book goes into detail about the evolution of fire on rangelands, how it produced the landscape that our forefathers first set foot onto, and how to manage it for ecological and economical means.

Book Fire Management and Invasive Plants

Download or read book Fire Management and Invasive Plants written by Matthew Brooks and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide practical guidelines for fire managers to effectively integrate invasive plant management activities into their fire management programs. Traditionally, fire management and invasive plant management have been conceived and implemented as separate programs. This manual is designed to help land managers bridge the gap between these two disciplines, and in particular give fire managers the tools they need to integrate invasive plant management strategies into the fire planning process.

Book Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems

Download or read book Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems written by Thomas A. Waldrop and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prescribed burning is an important tool throughout Southern forests, grasslands, and croplands. The need to control fire became evident to allow forests to regenerate. This manual is intended to help resource managers to plan and execute prescribed burns in Southern forests and grasslands. A new appreciation and interest has developed in recent years for using prescribed fire in grasslands, especially hardwood forests, and on steep mountain slopes. Proper planning and execution of prescribed fires are necessary to reduce detrimental effects, such as the impacts on air and downstream water quality. Book excerpt: "In September 2004, the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers established a federal, provincial, and territorial task group of assistant deputy ministers (ADMs) and commissioned the development of the Canadian Wildland Fire Strategy (CWFS). The ADMs created an intergovernmental team of analysts, experienced fire managers, and researchers, known as the CWFS Core Team, to consult with Canadian and international experts, collate information, conduct analyses, and present the findings. This team was directed to assess the current state of wildland fire management in Canada, examine the key influences and trends, and identify possible desired future states and how they could be achieved. This publication comprises a collection of nine reports written by the CWFS Core Team members and their associates. Collectively these papers include syntheses, analyses, and perspective articles that address a variety of the social, economic, and biophysical aspects of wildland fire and its management as well as policy, science, and operational issues in Canada."--Pub. desc.
