Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of six counties carved out of the Platte Purchase, added to Missouri in 1836, Nodaway County appeared to its first white explorers to be a rolling prairie, marginal for agriculture but full of opportunity for those willing to bring hard work and ingenuity to the land. Within a generation of building cabins and experimenting with a wide variety of agricultural enterprises, the county boasted at least 17 towns, four railroad lines, 16 newspapers, and all the economic and cultural institutions necessary for boosters to lay claim to progress and civility. While residents of towns and the countryside often drew distinctions between one another, their lives were intertwined by mills, horse farms, livestock shows, new technology, churches, schools, public entertainment of every sort, and occasional times of hardship. By the 1920s, the communities of Nodaway County, supported by a vibrant and diverse rural economy, reached a zenith of locally generated economic growth and community activity, captured artfully by photographers during the decades that bracketed the turn of the 20th century.

Book A Decade of Economic Growth in Missouri

Download or read book A Decade of Economic Growth in Missouri written by Harry Thomas Kelly and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis of the history of Missouri in the 1830's revealed the laissez faire development of the state's economy. The practice of non-interference, however, arose not from design but from circumstances. One important factor was the high level of the emigrants' business and technical knowledge which undoubtedly contributed to their independence. In addition, the state's geographic features encouraged rapid economic growth without necessitating extensive aid or advice from the local, state, or federal government. The technically competent capitalists played a significant role in shaping the state's economy. In St. Louis the Chouteaus', the Prattes', and William Ashley invested surplus capital to initiate or accelerate most endeavors within the state. Lead mining, gun powder manufacturing, the Santa Fe trade, the fur trade, and steamboat transportation flourished because of their investments. In western Missouri, the Aull brothers established numerous mercantile houses, erected mills, developed land, and invested in transportation. In eastern Missouri the Yates, the Colliers and George Garriot did the same thing. Country squires like Daniel Dunklin, Governor of Missouri, and David Thomson, a Kentucky landowner introduced blooded cattle and new strains of plants and founded rural businesses and towns. Missouri capitalists demonstrated the majorcontribution that technical know-how and profit motivation played in the development of the state. Geography provided economic advantages rather than limitations. The location, flow, and gradient of the numerous navigable rivers furnished a built in distribution system requiring only little maintenance. The hard smooth prairie yielded an ideal roadbed for the Santa Fe trail. Forests and easily mined minerals attracted both settlers and capital early in the state's history. Finally, Missouri's western location gave the citizens unlimited access to the resources of the whole West. The development of Missouri, was a complex process. The resolution, therefore, lies not in establishing a single thesis but rather in correlating many. The environment, the heritage of capitalism, the settlers' technical ability, and the geography all contributed to Missouri's economic development in the 1830's.
