Book Acid Mine Drainage

Download or read book Acid Mine Drainage written by Geoffrey S. Simate and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acid mine drainage (AMD) is essentially the flow of water polluted with metals and other substances from existing/old mining areas and is considered to be one of the sources of pollution. A wide range of technologies are available for preventing AMD generation and/or treating AMD before discharge, but there is a shift towards recovery of industrially useful materials and products from AMD. Acid Mine Drainage: From Waste to Resources explores novel methods developed for the reuse and/or recovery of industrially useful materials from AMD including discussing generation, prediction, prevention, and remediation processes. It includes legislation and policy frameworks governing AMD and its environmental/health impacts. Provides a detailed overview of the mining operations and discusses the geochemical and hydrogeological context of acid mine drainage AMD formation, prediction and impact Presents a holistic approach to AMD generation, prediction, prevention, and remediation processes Presents exclusive material on reuse, recycling, and recovery of industrially useful materials from AMD Gives a detailed overview of the legislation and policy regulatory framework governing the management of AMD Analyses the effects of AMD on the environment and health This volume is aimed at researchers and professionals in metallurgical engineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, and mining engineering, including policy makers.

Book Acid Mine Drainage in South Africa

Download or read book Acid Mine Drainage in South Africa written by Suvania Naidoo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief focuses on Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) in the three basins in the Witwatersrand, South Africa. It provides a background to AMD and its impactsfrom a social science perspective. The South African government and non-governmental organizations’ response to AMD is assessed, as well the socio-economic and developmental effects of AMD. This volume, which is based on the author’s Master’s dissertation at UNISA, involves interviews with a range of experts in the field from government departments, environmental organisations (activists), the private sector (mining), tourism sector and the agricultural sector. The book discusses existing policy documents on AMD and provides recommendations in response to the many socio-economic impacts which have not been fully addressed. A literature review on the global context of AMD is provided. South Africa’s water systems are already severely harmed by climate change, different forms of pollution, and poorly managed sanitation systems. For these reasons, the country is becoming increasingly water-stressed and therefore, water will continue to become much scarcer in the future. As a result of AMD’s continued impact on South Africa’s water systems, as a technical or scientific matter as well as the policy implications for the mining sector, water security and socio-economic sustainability has become a highly contested issue.

Book Performance Evaluation of Waste Materials for the Treatment of Acid Mine Drainage to Remove Heavy Metals and Sulfate

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Waste Materials for the Treatment of Acid Mine Drainage to Remove Heavy Metals and Sulfate written by Satish Chandra Bhuyan and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is the most severe environmental problem facing the mining sector in the current scenario because of low pH and high pollutants concentration. AMD contains a high amount of sulphate viz. pyrite, FeS2, and to a lesser extent pyrrhotite and heavy metal ions, contaminate both surface water and groundwater. To treat AMD, extensive research projects have been initiated by governments, the mining industry, universities, and research establishments. The environmental impact of AMD can be minimized at these basic levels; prevention should be taken to control the infiltration of groundwater to the pollution site and control the acid-generating process. There are some conventional active methods to treat AMD, such as compost reactor and packed bed iron-oxidation bioreactors; however, these methods have associated with costly material and high maintenance cost, which increases the cost of the entire treatment. In an alternative, the use of low-cost materials such as fly ash, metallurgical slag, zero-valent iron (ZVI), cement kiln dust (CKD), and organic waste such as peat humic agent (PHA), rice husk, and eggshell can be a valuable measure for economic viability to treat the metal-rich wastewater.

Book Treating Acid Mine Drainage from Abandoned Mines in Remote Areas

Download or read book Treating Acid Mine Drainage from Abandoned Mines in Remote Areas written by John J. Metesh and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the results and conclusions gained from the three demonstration projects. The paper concentrates on the characteristics of the processed material, equipment production, and the cost of the operation. Samples taken from windrows during the crushing operation were tested to determine hardness and gradations before and after crushing. The test results are included in the appendix. Cost varied from $6.38 to $18.83 per cubic yard, including roadbed preparation, crushing and blading. Rocks and boulders to‍?16-inch (406 millimeter) maximum size were crushed. The processed material has a maximum size of 2 to 3 inches (50 to 75 millimeters).‍?The product produced by the crusher offers a viable alternative for aggregate on a road surface, particularly as a road surface cushion material, where the quality and expense of standard crushed aggregate are not warranted.

Book Evaluation of a New Acid Mine Drainage Treatment Process

Download or read book Evaluation of a New Acid Mine Drainage Treatment Process written by Paul J. LaRosa and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An economic and engineering evaluation of a submerged coal refuse combustion process to convert acid mine water (AMW) to potable water has been made. In this process coal refuse is burned in molten iron to supply energy for distillation or reverse osmosis, and the coal refuse sulfur is trapped in a slag for eventual recovery of sulfur. Laboratory experimentation was conducted on those areas which could profoundly affect the process. These areas were: A laboratory demonstration of slag desulfurization to produce sulfur, the evaluation of slag retention characteristics, slag capability for neutralizing AMW and determination of slag compositions having acceptable fluidities. Engineering studies show that the process has potential for supplying inexpensive energy for distillation and permits the recovery of sulfur so that distilled water is economically produced.
