The agency examined that there were over 846 million international tourist arrivals in 2006. The industry has become essential for many countries. Tourism generates different kinds of revenue that can contribute to the host country’s welfare. Further, with the development of resorts, jobs are created in sectors directly or indirectly related to tourism such as transportation, accommodation and entertainment services. The following report investigates economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts in Mexico caused by the tourism industry. Positive as well as negative influences will be investigated. Furthermore, the paper will have a special focus on Cancún, a mega resort built by a governmental agency within only a few years. Mexico accounts to the leading tourism destinations among developing countries. Despite its wonderful beaches and the different kinds of activities such as water sports, deep-sea fishing, diving Mexico offers a wide range of culture and history. Ancient Maya sites, for example Tulum or Chichen Itza being the most popular attraction with tourists.

Tourism, like any other economic sector, uses resources, generates waste, and creates negative environmental, cultural, and social impacts. However, tourism also creates benefits as it contributes to local, regional, and national economies, and it may also foster conservation if a portion of the generated revenues is invested in protection. This research provides an overview of the direct relationship between tourism, sustainability, and the natural and socioeconomic environments. This study analyzes the impact of tourism development on two small coastal communities in Mexico: Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa and Puerto Progreso. Both communities have unique natural and cultural assets, which are their principal attraction. In both cases, tourism is their main economic activity. This study also analyzes the conflicts and challenges that local authorities and residents of these communities face over the use and control of resources. Tourism-base coastal communities utilize pristine beaches, historic landmarks, scenic ecosystems, and sites with unique flora and fauna as main attraction. Such tourism communities seek economic benefits from visitors, which often come at the cost of maintaining their socio-cultural integrity. Tourism is considered an important engine of economic growth for local, regional, and even national economies because it contributes to a significant portion of foreign revenues. But, if not well planned, tourism can negatively impact communities. This study suggests that coastal tourism and environmental, social, and cultural changes are correlated. The findings here suggest that the coastal zone in both case studies is becoming densely developed. Hence, both case studies here presented and their natural and local assets that attract and support tourism, face increasing pressures and changes. This research focuses not only in the complexity of tourism problems experienced within small coastal communities, but it also present a comprehensive approach to coastal zone management and sustainable development. It attempts to demonstrate that when adopting sustainable strategies, small tourism-oriented communities can significantly enhance natural environments, maximize tourism's economic benefits, and protect their cultural assets, while becoming more competitive.

Book excerpt: Approximately 4.1 million people live in the three states of the Yucatán Peninsula: Quintana Roo, Yucatán, and Campeche. Some 30 municipalities are in a coastal territory of almost 2,000 linear kilometers, from the oil fields of the Gulf of Mexico to the world-renowned beaches of Cancún, just north of the second-largest barrier reef in the world. The peninsula's natural assets also include notable Mayan temples. With poverty far from eliminated, and with economic development opportunities beckoning in agriculture, manufacturing, and hydrocarbon development, the region is under growing risks from environmental hazards. Oil spills, hurricanes, coral bleaching, extreme flooding, and erosion have all been experienced in this region over the past decade. Based on preliminary identification of environmental priorities, Opportunities for Environmentally Healthy, Inclusive, and Resilient Growth in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula explores selected topics that aim to inform decision making in the region. A general context of integrated coastal zone management is used to explore issues, constraints, and potential solutions, and the role of geomorphology is examined with a view to identifying how shore management plans can contribute to improved coastal management. Economic studies find that the main environmental health risks in the peninsula result in more than 1,000 premature deaths every year and in more than 9.36 million days lost to illnesses. These risks generate substantial economic losses, representing 2.2†“3.3 percent of gross regional income. Scenarios relating to the economic cost of extreme weather events generate similar levels of damages: 1.4†“1.5 percent of GDP in 2020 and 1.6†“2.3 percent of GDP in 2050. A social accounting matrix examines the social and environmental interconnectedness to the various parts of the economy, and an institutional analysis considers the mandates of existing institutions in the states, and of the contribution that regulatory measures may make to environmentally sustainable development without undermining economic growth prospects.

Over time, many of these destinations have now come to represent 'mass tourism' and are the subject of many studies on the impacts of tourism and competitiveness policies. The conclusions of these studies point to the need for new perspectives and strategies ranging from adaptation to new contexts to a radical change in targets. Concepts such as 'sustainability', 'nature', 'biodiversity' or 'climate change' have now been added to the tourism industry with varying degrees of knowledge and skill. These offer a great opportunity to improve a model of tourism previously oriented towards business and the institutional rhetoric of "sustainability" – a fact now recognised by tourists as representing the negative effects of conventional tourism.Management of these innovations should include among its aims environmental education and orient visitors towards awareness and respect for sustainability even outside their leisure time. To this end, the tourist needs to be made aware of all those involved and their commitment to managing the destination, as enjoying the territory should be based upon minimising the socio-ecological impacts of tourism, and on motivating nature conservation and participation of local populations in both these goals, as well as in the economic benefits obtained. The challenge entails the destination finding a good balance between economic and cultural benefits, landscape conservation and tourist satisfaction. This fifth volume of the Tourism Today Series presents a collection of papers addressing the how to manage these types of uses at a variety of destinations and in multiple contextual realities. These edited papers were selected from those presented at different international conferences organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology.
