Book Liberalization in the Process of Economic Development

Download or read book Liberalization in the Process of Economic Development written by Lawrence B. Krause and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-09-23 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic growth in all developing countries is guided, and often accelerated, by generally intrusive policies implemented by governments intent on playing an active role in furthering development. As economies have grown and become more complex, however, even small market distortions are magnified, and the tendency is to rely more heavily on the market for continued growth. In this volume, leading experts in economic development examine the variety of issues that arise as governments in some of the newly industrializing countries of Southeast Asia, such as South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore, grapple with this difficult process of liberalization. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1991.

Book The Order of Economic Liberalization

Download or read book The Order of Economic Liberalization written by Ronald I. Mckinnon and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1993-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can knowledge of financial policies in developing countries over four decades help the socialist economies of Asia and Eastern Europe become open market economies in the 1990s? In all these countries the loss of fiscal and monetary control has often resulted in high inflation that undermines the liberalization process itself. In the second edition of The Order of Economic Liberalization, Ronald McKinnon builds on his influential work on the liberalization of financial markets in less developed countries and outlines the progression necessary to move from a "repressed" to an open economy. New to this edition are chapters that contrast the gradual Chinese approach to liberalizing domestic and foreign trade with the "big bang" approach followed by some Eastern European countries and republics of the former Soviet Union. Financial control and macroeconomic stability, McKinnon argues, are more critical to a successful transition than is any crash program to privatize state-owned industrial assets and the banking system.

Book Liberalization and Development

Download or read book Liberalization and Development written by Deepak Nayyar and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of published and unpublished essays authored by the eminent scholar Deepak Nayyar. The essays written over a period of two decades, focus on liberalization and development of underdeveloped and developing countries. The themes explored range from macroeconomicsthrough industrialization to development with reference to the changed context shaped by liberalization. The essays are grouped in four thematic clusters. The first part is on economic theory, contextualized in developing countries. It relates macroeconomic theory and policy to the institutional setting and explores alternative perspectives. The second part is on development, in a world that has been transformed by markets and globalization. It alsoexplores the consequences for public policies and for employment. The third part is on industrialization. It begins with the international context to consider the debate on industrialization in India which is relevant for other late-industrializers. The last part is on liberalization. It evaluatesthe Indian experience with stabilization, adjustment, and reform. The volume situates economic liberalization in India in its wider political and historical context. In a world where much of development economics is concerned with micro-theoretic analysis, these essays provide a macroeconomicanalysis of development. The book provides a rich blend of theory and policy from a heterodox perspective.

Book Development Planning in India

Download or read book Development Planning in India written by Kamal Nayan Kabra and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 1997 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical review of India's experience with development planning and its interface with the evolving mode of production and strategy of development, Development Planning in India raises a number of central methodological and institutional questions related to the planning process. Kamal Nayan Kabra dwells particularly on the chasm between planning and formulating and implementing on the one hand and the real stated objectives on the other. Discarding the general tendency to adopt a narrow, economistic approach, Kabra highlights the real-life possibilities and constraints facing a holistic, institutional approach to development planning. He avoids the pitfall of viewing market forces versus plan and centralization versus decentralization as irreconcilable opposites. Instead, the author provides practical suggestions for enriching the development process through effective plan implementation. This could result in a more meaningful multilevel framework to achieve people-centered and autocratic development with a human face. At a time when "plan wariness" seems to be setting in, Development Planning in India serves as a cogent reminder that planning remains crucial in developing countries such as India. At the same time, the content and meaning of the process need to be rethought and fresh impetus provided to overcome the constraints in order to make development planning more relevant to the needs of today. Professors, students, and practitioners in development planning and administration, policy studies, development studies, and economics will find Development Planning in India useful.

Book Trade Liberalisation and Poverty

Download or read book Trade Liberalisation and Poverty written by Minh Son Le and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses Alan Winters’ analytical framework to investigate the effects of trade liberalisation on economic growth and poverty in Vietnam. The country launched a programme of economic and trade reforms, known as Doi Moi, in the mid-1980s which placed the economy on a transitional path from central planning to a market economy. Since then Vietnam has attained a number of remarkable achievements in terms of economic growth and poverty reduction. Although some formidable problems (such as inequality and inflation) remain, it is apparent that trade liberalisation has been associated with a big reduction in poverty. The analysis in the book focuses on the microeconomic (household) level, and there is an emphasis on tracing the effects of trade liberalisation through the four separate channels identified by Winters. Such in-depth and micro-level analyses yield new insights that support important policy lessons and recommendations for Vietnam in particular and, more generally, for similar developing countries.

Book Economic Planning and Social Justice in Developing Countries

Download or read book Economic Planning and Social Justice in Developing Countries written by Ozay Mehmet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978, this book was written at a time when belief was high in Western-guided economic development of the emerging countries. The success of Marshall Plan in war-torn Europe generated a US-led optimism that, with generous inflows of aid and technical assistance, the Third World could be won over in the Cold War. The author’s direct experience as a young academic economist in Cyprus, Malaysia, Uganda and Liberia led him to question this general optimism: the reality on the ground in the developing world did not seem to match Western optimism. Theories and blueprints, made in the West, did not fit the requirements of developing countries. Higher production and better income distribution were inseparable twin objectives of developing nations. That meant, production of a higher national output must at the same time promote social justice. Investment must create adequate jobs so that new entrants into rapidly expanding labor force could be gainfully employed. Yet, the dominant (Western) theories of development at the time, in particular the Trickle Down Theory of Growth, prescribed "Growth First, Distribution Later" strategy. Similarly, Import Substitution Industrialization theories were emphasized at the expense of export-led growth. Dualistic Growth theories preached urban-biased, anti-rural development. This book was written as a rebuttal of such faulty theorizing and misguided professional technical assistance and the book’s message is no less valid today than in the 1970’s.

Book Endogenous Origins of Economic Reforms in India and Chin

Download or read book Endogenous Origins of Economic Reforms in India and Chin written by Rajiv G. Maluste and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Attitudinal change' in the context of economic reforms has been referred to in Rodrik and Subramanian (2005), DeLong (2003), Kohli (1989), and Panagariya (2004, 2008). This dissertation provides empirical support for this literature, establishing an earlier start for India's economic policy liberalisation than presented in stylized accounts. It demonstrates the endogenous nature of the origins of these policy shifts. 'Attitudinal change' literature had directed attention to the need for further research into India's policy changes of the early 1980s and for studying broader comparability issues in other developing countries. This research makes a contribution towards filling these gaps. This dissertation shows that India started its economic liberalisation under the Indira Gandhi administration from 1980 to 1984. These findings depart from the conventional view that India's economic policy changes were initiated by the Narasimha Rao government in 1991, or by the Rajiv Gandhi administration in the mid to late 1980s. The dissertation establishes that policy shifts of the early 1980s had endogenous origins in the political leadership's attitudinal changes. The Indira Gandhi administration of the early 1980s revisited the statist policies of its previous tenure from 1966 to 1977. The new approach entailed more openness towards private enterprise, scaling back the role of the public sector, and starting India's integration into the global economy. The dissertation also discusses the comparable role of attitudinal changes at the start of China's policy liberalisation led by Deng Xiaoping from 1978 to 1982. It focuses on the significance and challenges faced by China's political leadership in bringing about societal attitudinal change. The dissertation concludes by drawing comparisons between India and China, developing a linkage between their endogenous attitudinal changes and economic policy liberalisation.
