Book The Periphery in the Knowledge Economy

Download or read book The Periphery in the Knowledge Economy written by Mario Polèse and published by Institut national de la recherche scientifique/INRS-Urbanisation, culture et société. This book was released on 2002 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since the early 1980's most peripheral regions of Eastern Canada have seen their population and employment levels stagnate, then decline. However, these trends - ilustrated by the first results of the 2001 census - are characterised by strong discontinuities (mine closures, collapse of fish stock), but also by counter-trends (dynamic entrepreneurship, success in some regions). In this book the authors examine the economy and geographic processes which underlie these trends, and address the following questions: are these processes specific to Eastern Canada, or are they more general? Are all peripheral regions on an equal footing with respect to the trends towards metropolisation and increasing international trade? Are there any policy approaches which may counter-act some of the effects of these structural trends?"--P. 4 of cover.

Book The Social and Economic Importance of the Co operative Sector in Saskatchewan

Download or read book The Social and Economic Importance of the Co operative Sector in Saskatchewan written by Lou Hammond Ketilson and published by Study of Co-Operatives University of Saskatchewan. This book was released on 1998 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report on Saskatchewan co-operatives begins with an examination of the roles that these organizations play in the province's communities. The theoretical base of the analysis is a conceptual model of co-operatives and their impact on communities developed through past research and described in appendix B. The analysis in this section is based on interviews with community and co-operative leaders in 11 different centres in the province chosen to provide a broad overview of the southern half of the province and to obtain samples reflecting different climatic conditions, resource bases, and population mix. Responses to the interviews are organized by geographical region and are presented in the fourth section, entitled Community Profiles. The second section conceptualizes the social and economic impact of co-operatives in building and sustaining communities. The third section is a sectoral analysis of Saskatchewan co-operatives, covering such matters as numbers of organizations and their members, employees, investment, assets and liabilities, revenues, and member equity. Sectors covered include agricultural/resource, community development, child care, retail/wholesale, financial, and community services. The final section presents results of a survey conducted to identify ways in which involvement with a co-operative might be related to current and past involvement in community leadership. Appendices include information on survey methodology and a list of questions for use in community interviews.

Book A Great and Noble Scheme The Tragic Story of the Expulsion of the French Acadians from Their American Homeland

Download or read book A Great and Noble Scheme The Tragic Story of the Expulsion of the French Acadians from Their American Homeland written by John Mack Faragher and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2006-02-17 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Altogether superb: an accessible, fluent account that advances scholarship while building a worthy memorial to the victims of two and a half centuries past." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) In 1755, New England troops embarked on a "great and noble scheme" to expel 18,000 French-speaking Acadians ("the neutral French") from Nova Scotia, killing thousands, separating innumerable families, and driving many into forests where they waged a desperate guerrilla resistance. The right of neutrality; to live in peace from the imperial wars waged between France and England; had been one of the founding values of Acadia; its settlers traded and intermarried freely with native Mikmaq Indians and English Protestants alike. But the Acadians' refusal to swear unconditional allegiance to the British Crown in the mid-eighteenth century gave New Englanders, who had long coveted Nova Scotia's fertile farmland, pretense enough to launch a campaign of ethnic cleansing on a massive scale. John Mack Faragher draws on original research to weave 150 years of history into a gripping narrative of both the civilization of Acadia and the British plot to destroy it.
