Book The economic development of the Slovak Republic from post Soviet control to present day An Economic Analysis

Download or read book The economic development of the Slovak Republic from post Soviet control to present day An Economic Analysis written by John Peacock and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Berlin, language: English, abstract: This paper explores the economic development of the Slovak Republic from post-Soviet control to present day. The following paper explores the recent economic developments of the Slovak Republic, from its accession into the European Union in the early 2000s, throughout the European monetary crisis in the years 2008 - 2009 and finally reflects upon the country’s current economic state. In doing so, this paper analyzes the most relevant indicators of international and domestic economic well-being and describes some of the underlying factors for these developments. An analysis of the degree to which Slovakia has overcome the hardships imposed by the economic crisis is also presented. The analyses in this paper rely on statistical information available from public databases and, when applicable, consultation of expert literature for an interpretation of the data. When doing so, the author has attempted to provide data for comparison and context, generally with the average from the EU 27 states or of the other Visegrád Group members, when available. This paper only considers a limited number of indicators of economic well-being for these analyses: balance of payments, openness, foreign direct investment, government deficit and debt, inflation, economic growth, employment, and investment. As a result, some other economically relevant topics may be excluded which could provide an even better analysis of the problem. Social costs and other non-economic factors are entirely omitted from this paper although they play an important role in any country’s standard of living. Finally, it is important to note during the analysis of the developments in 2009 and the years afterward that all changes cannot be attributed to the European Debt Crisis as another important event occurred: Slovakia adopted the Euro as its national currency; an event that is often cited as causing initial inflation.

Book excerpt: "Slovakia has a rich and complex history, but until now there has not been a comprehensive analysis of the nation's economic thought. This volume expertly fills this gap and traces the development of Slovak economic thought from the 16th Century to the present day. Identifying key themes, moments and thinkers, the chapters in this work consider the evolution of Slovak economic ideas and explores the nation's place alongside other schools of thought. Significant coverage is given to the economists Gregorius Berzeviczy and Imrich Karvaés, as well as landmark periods such as the creation of Czechoslovakia, the World Wars, the Socialist regime, and post-Communist Slovakia. This book is of interest to advanced students and researchers of the history of economic thought, economic history and political economy, as well as those with a specific interest in the history of Slovakia. Julius Horvâath is Professor at the Central European University, Budapest, Hungary, and Vienna, Austria"--

Book The Czech and Slovak Republics

Download or read book The Czech and Slovak Republics written by M. Mark Stolarik and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in the book compare the Czech Republic and Slovakia since the breakup of Czechoslovakia in 1993. The papers deal with the causes of the divorce and discuss the political, economic and social developments in the new countries. This is the only English-language volume that presents the synoptic findings of leading Czech, Slovak, and North American scholars in the field. The authors include two former Prime Ministers of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, eight leading scholars (four Czechs and four Slovaks), and eight knowledgeable commentators from North America. The most significant new insight is that in spite of predictions by various pundits in the Western World that Czechia would flourish after the breakup and Slovakia would languish, the opposite has happened. While the Czech Republic did well in its early years, it is now languishing while Slovakia, which had a rough start, is now doing very well. Anyone interested in the history of the Czech and Slovak Republics over the last twenty years will find gratification in reading this book.

Book Competitiveness and Economic Development in Europe

Download or read book Competitiveness and Economic Development in Europe written by Sławomir I. Bukowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of an economy to adapt quickly, flexibly, and effectively to the demands of the changing international economic environment can only be investigated using the achievements of other national economies or regions as a benchmark. This book analyzes the fundamental factors of competitiveness, which will, in turn, facilitate economic development and growth, in the new post-crisis environment. In the economic, social, legal, and technological environment that has emerged in recent years, as well as in the period after the recent financial crisis, it is critical to define, assess, and implement new pathways to competitiveness and economic development. The book covers all aspects of competitiveness and economic growth, from financial intermediaries to tourism and the digital economy, and from regulation and corporate governance to exchange rate dynamics and monetary policy issues. It uses empirical findings from a variety of different countries with divergent economic structures and policies. It examines the new system of production, and the technological, commercial, financial and institutional environment, with the aim of recommending a proportional division of benefits and costs of economic growth. It offers a fresh, holistic, and flexible concept to underscore the new relationship between competitiveness and economic growth. Such an approach is needed, whereby competitiveness is no longer a zero-sum game between countries, but is achievable for all countries. The book recommends future directions and offers policy solutions, and as such, will appeal to students, researchers, and policymakers, as well as those interested in the role of competitiveness in the operation of markets, productivity, and economic development, and how it might foster innovation and growth.

Book Tourism Development in Post Soviet Nations

Download or read book Tourism Development in Post Soviet Nations written by Susan L. Slocum and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Former communist countries face unique issues in developing and marketing tourism businesses, communities, and attractions because of centralized polices that discouraged international influences. While soviet economies relied on state policies to facilitate community development, the success of capitalism lies in access to a variety of resources, such as the environment, fiscal services, infrastructure, and market knowledge at the local level. Moreover, communal societies potentially possess social capital that can provide unique economic development opportunities. This book incorporates a regional perspective that widens the tourism development debate to include theoretical analyses, applied research, and case studies that document the broader successes and challenges that affect tourism stakeholders and addresses the necessary elements that facilitate a comprehensive tourism development strategy in emerging and transitioning former communist countries.
