Book Tunisia s Economic Development

Download or read book Tunisia s Economic Development written by Mustapha K. Nabli and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-16 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies the differences in growth and development, and the various factors lying behind them, across both Middle East and North African (MENA) and East Asian countries over the 1960‒2020 period. It considers a very wide range of factors, compares initial situations, institutions, and government policies, the dynamic responses to changing circumstances, and discusses the inability of the governments of the MENA region to achieve not only political reform, but also the kinds of economic reform that would allow their citizens to prosper in an increasingly globalized world. The book focuses on Tunisia. Since its independence in 1956 until 2010, Tunisia had considerable success relative to many other MENA countries, but was somewhat less successful relative to East Asian countries. Since 2010, however, while transitioning away from autocracy to democracy, it has been in rather serious economic decline. The book highlights how both the factors identified as enabling Tunisia’s initial success and those leading to its subsequent decline can provide many useful insights for improving the management of economic development across the whole MENA region and perhaps also to developing countries throughout the world.

Book Making the Tunisian Resurgence

Download or read book Making the Tunisian Resurgence written by Mahmoud Sami Nabi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the socioeconomic factors that triggered Tunisia’s "revolution for dignity” and the current issues and challenges facing its economy while suggesting mechanisms and instruments for their resolution. The author begins by analyzing the roots of the revolution and the post-revolution situation from a political sociology perspective and then diagnoses the Tunisian economy before and after the revolution and identifies the multidimensional binding constraints preventing it from escaping the middle-income trap. The book then explores the pillars of an inclusive development strategy that Tunisia should pursue. The emphasis is made on building inclusive institutions, developing a new social contract and reinventing the country's leadership. Beyond the institutional dimension, the author suggests innovative financial channels, discusses the strategy of a successful integration of the Tunisian economy in the global economy as well as the pillars of its transformation into a knowledge-based economy.

This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses recent trends, constraints, and opportunities for the future of Tunisia's economy. Tunisia enjoyed solid GDP growth rates in the run-up to the revolution of 2011, driven by the manufacturing and service sectors. A stable macroeconomic environment and a gradual liberalization of trade and investment facilitated growth. Labor has been gradually overshadowed by capital accumulation as the main growth driver, while productivity has been lagging. The existing gap in factors of production can be filled by appropriate financial and banking policies to increase access to finance and boost physical capital accumulation, a sound business environment to attract investors and boost long-term productivity, and a reduction in macroeconomic risks.

Book The New Institutional Economics and Development

Download or read book The New Institutional Economics and Development written by M.K. Nabli and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-11-28 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Institutional Economics (NIE) and its two main branches, namely, the theory of transaction cost and contractual choice on the one hand, and that of collective action on the other, broaden the analytical framework of mainstream economics. In doing so the NIE attempts to explain the institutional phenomena which, although almost universally recognised as important, have previously eluded the group of economists. This book is concerned with the NIE and its possible application to Development Economics. It has two specific objectives. The first is to show the relevance and assess the applicability of the principles and insights of the NIE to the analysis of the problems of the LDC's. The second is to provide another set of applications and empirical investigations of the NIE. By combining the relevant theoretical background with applications, the book is self-contained and presented in such a way as to be accessible to each of the following types of reader: (1) development economists and practitioners (2) readers interested in institutions and the NIE (3) regional specialists in North Africa and in countries such as Tunisia and (4) those interested in political economy.

Book excerpt: Tunisia’s reliance on European countries for export earnings, tourism, remittances, and foreign direct investment inflows has remained high over the last decades. Remittances and tourism receipts have been broadly stable in percent of GDP, with somewhat more fluctuations in the latter caused in part by identifiable political events that harmed tourism in the region. Tunisia’s annual growth rate appears to have become increasingly synchronized over time with the annual growth rate of its main European trading partners.

Book Tunisia s Global Integration

Download or read book Tunisia s Global Integration written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tunisia's past integration policies have significantly increased FDI flows in the manufacturing sector, triggering a rise of textiles and clothing and mechanical and electrical components exports through participation to EU production networks and increasing productivity, growth, and job creation. In spite of these results, important challenges remain. FDI increases are not accompanied by a rapid increase in domestic investment. The business climate of the domestic market-oriented sector can be further improved. Trade integration largely has bypassed non-tourism service sectors and the structural transformation of the service sector is slow. This study: (i) examines the key integration challenges that the country's manufacturing sector is facing; (ii) examine the key remaining reforms needed to further enhance the competitive position of the country; and (iii) identifies the specific policy reforms needed to realize the largely untapped potential in services. The report reviews the entry, business, and trade restrictions in Tunisia's backbone service sectors (telecommunication, banking, air transport, accounting, auditing, and legal services) using a well-focused regulatory questionnaire. The restrictiveness indices derived from the regulatory diagnostic analysis allow us to assess Tunisia's relative performance. Some key regulatory reform options are proposed and their impact estimated. The study examines the prospect for further increasing exports and off shoring of a large number of services for which Tunisia has demonstrated a real export capacity
