Book Finance Development and the IMF

Download or read book Finance Development and the IMF written by James M. Boughton and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2009-06-25 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to provide objective analysis of the role and effectiveness of multilaterals in general and the IMF and World Bank in particular. The IMF is a multilateral financial institution with a mandate to promote financial and macroeconomic stability, cooperative economic policies, and a balanced growth of international trade. More than two fifths of its 185 members are low-income countries and many others have substantial pockets of poverty in their populations. Since economic development and the reduction of poverty are the most important economic challenges that these countries face, how can the IMF best help them? How can the imperative of macroeconomic and financial stability be reconciled with the requirements for sustained economic growth? This volume brings together the research of leading economists, political scientists, and historians to suggest ways for the IMF to address these issues effectively.

Book IMF Supported Programs in Low Income Countries

Download or read book IMF Supported Programs in Low Income Countries written by Mr.Christian Mumssen and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the short and longer-term impact of IMF engagement in Low-Income Countries (LICs) over nearly three decades. In contrast to earlier studies, we focus on a sample composed exclusively of LICs and disentangle the different effects of IMF longer-term engagement and short-term financing using a propensity score matching approach to control for selection bias. Our results indicate that longer-term IMF support (at least five years of program engagement per decade) helped LICs sustain economic growth and boost resilience by building fiscal buffers. Interestingly, the size of IMF financing has no significant impact on economic growth, possibly pointing to the prominent role of IMF policy advice and institutional capacity building in the context of longer-term engagement. We also present evidence that the short-term IMF engagement through augmentations of existing programs or short-term and emergency facilities is positively associated with a wide range of macroeconomic outcomes. Notably, the IMF financial support has the greatest impact on short-term growth when LICs are faced with substantial macroeconomic imbalances or exogenous shocks.

Book Enhancing Collaboration Joint Management Action Plan

Download or read book Enhancing Collaboration Joint Management Action Plan written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2007-09-20 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 2006, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the President of the World Bank commissioned the External Review Committee on IMF-World Bank Collaboration to look at the status of institutional collaboration and provide suggestions for improvement. The Committee’s report, released in February 2007, called for the strengthening of the culture of collaboration in the two institutions, and made a number of specific proposals in that direction. The Joint Management Action Plan (JMAP) was prepared against this background, and the actions agreed between Bank and Fund managements in the JMAP are scheduled to be presented in informal Board meetings in early October. The JMAP will be launched immediately after the Annual Meetings. The goal is for most new systems to be operational in time for the preparation of FY09 budgets.

It examines how development assistance can be more effective at reducing global poverty and gives five mainrecommendations for making aid more effective: targeting financial aid to poor countries with good policies and strong economic management; providing policy-based aid to demonstrated reformers; using simpler instruments to transfer resources to countries with sound management; focusing projects oncreating and transmitting knowledge and capacity; and rethinking the internal incentives of aid agencies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinguishing between "aid" and "help" in development aid and finance, the authors discuss aid in the context of other North- South flows such as trade or debt service, and describe the role and evolution of aid during the Cold War. They address issues such as food aid, the EU's Lome cooperation, Japan's emergence as the largest donor and its specific aid philosophy, the often- neglected question of North-South aid, and the role of NGOs. New trends analyzed include political conditionality, the UNDP's proposal to reorient aid towards human development, and the question of aid diversion to the former communist countries. The authors conclude by proposing a series of reforms for development aid and finance. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
