Book excerpt: This edition of the yearly survey examines regional economic and social developments in the Asia and the Pacific region during 2005. The growth rate slowed moderately in 2005 mainly as a result of high oil prices and softening of growth in global trade. For 2006 it is expected that growth maintains its current momentum providing that oil prices do not increase significantly and global external imbalances do not unwind suddenly. Propects for the region would also be affected if avian influenza develops into a human pandemic. Efforts are needed to ensure all benefits of high growth are passed on to the poor via good employment opportunities for all.

Book Economic Opportunities for Women in the East Asia and Pacific Region

Download or read book Economic Opportunities for Women in the East Asia and Pacific Region written by Amanda Ellis and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-05-03 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East Asia and Pacific region has made great progress, relative to other regions, with regard to both economic development and, specifically, economic opportunities for women. However, aspiring female entrepreneurs continue to face unequal barriers to starting, operating, and growing their businesses. Not only does this hurt business women in the region, but it also ultimately hurts poverty reduction and economic growth. 'Economic Opportunities for Women in the East Asia and the Pacific Region' brings together data and available evidence on the constraints that female entrepreneurs in the region face with regard to: access to assets, business regulations and governance issues, and available avenues for expanding businesses and trading with larger markets. The authors present recommendations at the end of each chapter. This book will be of interest to policy makers, donors, nongovernmental organizations, and researchers looking to further examine the constraints that are holding back female entrepreneurs in East Asia and the Pacific.

Book Youth Media and Culture in the Asia Pacific Region

Download or read book Youth Media and Culture in the Asia Pacific Region written by Usha M. Rodrigues and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-05 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth, Media and Culture in the Asia Pacific Region presents an analysis of youth media activities in a diverse, but geographically connected Asia Pacific region. The region, which is spatially connected by its colonial and imperial past, is becoming a significant player in the globalized world. In this context, youth situated in these economically, politically and socially structured communities are redefining their locales through their patterns of media use. The discourse of ‘youth’ in this disparate region is manifest in the media through their identity articulations and social activism. The book illustrates that these ‘youth subcultures’ in the Asia Pacific are part of the well marketed global consumerism culture, and yet at other times independent of the commodifying impetus of global capital. It draws on case studies to examine some of the media practices youth in the region are engaged in and elucidates the process of social change taking place in some Asia Pacific nations. 'This book contributes to the important and growing field of youth media studies. The regionalization of media research is necessarily recuperated here, bringing large populations of media users into a frame of reference that allows critical reflection on the new waves of use and sociality in the Asia Pacific region.' Stephanie Hemelryk Donald, Professor of International Studies, UTS

Book excerpt: This book provides an assessment of the megatrends that are reshaping the emerging markets landscape. With developing countries already accounting for 40% of world GDP, emerging markets consumption growth will be an increasingly important growth engine for the world economy over the next two decades. However, emerging markets in many parts of Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America are still facing tremendous economic challenges such as poverty, inequality, weak governance and inadequate infrastructure. The developed nations are no longer insulated from the economic shockwaves impacting developing countries, as globalisation and economic integration have also amplified the transmission effects to the West through immigration flows, cross-border crime and the proliferation of international terrorism. Emerging Markets Megatrends is an essential read for government policymakers, corporate executives, international investors and analysts wishing to understand more about the economic drivers and long-term outlook for emerging markets.

Book Social Capital in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Social Capital in the Asia Pacific written by Yuliani Suseno and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social capital is broadly conceptualised as consisting of resources and network ties embedded in the social structures and relationships that facilitate beneficial outcomes for the actors within those structures. Despite the number of research studies on social capital, there have been fewer attempts to examine social capital in the context of service-oriented firms, particularly in the Asia Pacific. This is surprising as the service industry plays an important role in the global services trade transactions and business activities. Social capital enables and maintains social relations for business transformation for service-oriented firms. Indeed, it would be unimaginable for any economic activity, particularly in service-oriented firms, to occur without social capital. This examination of social capital in the Asia Pacific region provides the context for recognising the cultural, social and economic opportunities and challenges of several Asia Pacific countries that can potentially enrich our knowledge and understanding of the region. Contributions are drawn from cases based in Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, China and Australia, for relevant application in the areas of social capital and service-oriented firms in the Asia Pacific. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Asia Pacific Business Review.

Book Crafting A Legacy The Incredible Lives Of Asian pacific Hand Surgery Pioneers

Download or read book Crafting A Legacy The Incredible Lives Of Asian pacific Hand Surgery Pioneers written by Dawn Chia and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of the remarkable journeys of 48 hand surgery pioneers from the Asian-Pacific region. They came from diverse backgrounds — one being the 21st generation doctor in the family to another being the first ever orthopaedic surgeon of a major university. While some pioneers delved deep in the lab to push the boundaries of surgical care, others strived to make high quality hand surgery available to the masses. However, what united them all was an unwavering commitment to their patients' well-being and a willingness to go above and beyond to attain their objectives. The International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (IFSSH) celebrates the spirit of enthusiasm, sacrifice and commitment to the cause of hand surgery by recognising these pioneers during the triennial IFSSH congress. Each biographical article in this anthology was written by someone who has closely known or collaborated with the featured pioneer. Each of these trailblazers has a story that will stir emotions and inspire others. We believe it's important to share these narratives to motivate the younger generation. By doing so, we hope to inspire them to follow in their footsteps, provide exceptional care to their patients and collectively create a better world to live in.

Book Asia Pacific in the New World Order

Download or read book Asia Pacific in the New World Order written by Christopher Brook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asia-Pacific in the New World Order critically explores the notion that a distinctive regional power bloc is developing linking countries bordering the Pacific, with East Asia at its core. This student-friendly volume sheds light on the complex interplay between global, regional and national forces which have transformed the Asia-Pacific area into one of the most vibrant and economically successful regions in the world. Historical narratives alongside geopolitical and geoeconomic perspectives are deployed to examine the shifting pattern of power relations and security structures across the region, set within a wider world context. Key issues addressed include: * what are the primary security problems of the region and how are they being resolved? * does the dynamic growth of the region, and particularly the rise of China, pose a challenge to existing structures of world order? The text has a strong interdisciplinary flavour drawing on analytical approaches from the international relations, political economy and political geography literature. Authors have been drawn from the Asia-Pacific region and the UK and all are established scholars in their specialist fields.
