Book Educational Development of Scheduled Castes

Download or read book Educational Development of Scheduled Castes written by S. K. Chatterjee and published by Gyan Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognising the role of education as an effective instrument for bringing about changes in Scheduled Castes in their socio-economic and socio-cultural conditions in an elaborate programme of pre-Matric and post-Matric scholarships, reservations of seats in the schools and colleges, establishement of hostels and ashram schools and many other beneficial schemes are in operation for the last five decades. It is of considerable interest to find out how these facilities have been actually beneficial for them and what is the level of their progress in the field of education. This book is aimed at knowing the truth in this regard. In fact, the educational progress of the Scheduled Castes suffers from two deficiencies; first, they lag very much behind the rest of the population in their educational achievement and second, among them some group have made far more, rapid progress than others. The benefits of the special educational facilities for the Scheduled Castes have not accrued equitable to the most backward communities among them. As a result, severe interand intra-caste and intra-and intra-state differentials have given rise to a separate class among them. This study based on the data, identifies the castes and the caste-groups which have benefited due to differential utilization of the incentives and other protective programmes and suggests measures to bring about an all round educational development of the Scheduled Castes. A bold and pragmatic step is called for to give a new orientation to the present policy of educational development of the Scheduled Castes, if we are really interested in ushering in equality through education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education is the most important tool for empowerment and a means to achieve better standard of living, employment increases productivity and quality of life and health indicates the well being of a human being along with contributing to his/her productivity. These three factors present the socioeconomic status. The Scheduled Caste (SC) population of India (16.8%- Census 2011) has had a history of being excluded from basic rights which had an adverse effect on their socio-economic development. Inclusion of SCs has always been important from the point of view of the policymakers too, (The motto of the 11th five year plan). Many other policies have been formulated for the socioeconomic development of the SCs and many are directed solely towards the improvement of their educational, employment and health levels. Hence, it is crucial to assess the development levels of the SCs. Many other factors determine the socio-economic level of the SCs but education, employment and health are the main focus of this paper. This paper throws light on the educational, employment and health status of the SCs and compares it with that of the total population in India since around 2000-01 to 2014-15. The Scheduled Caste SubPlan and some centrally sponsored policies are also analysed to know the amount allocated for the inclusion of the SCs.

Book excerpt: India has the largest concentrationof tribals in the world. In recent years, a vibrant feature of North-East Region has been the rise of ethnic consciousness leading to tribal movement and ethnic unrest. This vital problem faced by us today is largely on inheritance from our recent past and a close look back is called for to unravel some trends for second thought to solve this burning problem. In the present book, Dr. Paul has tried to explain the various dimensions of tribal movements witha special reference to 'Udayachal Movement' in Assam Valley. This ia pioneering attempt where he explored sociologically the genesis of plain's tribal movement of Assam Valley. His contention is that Udayachal Movement has not come out from a vacuum. The contradictions introduced by the Unequal socio-political forces in the tribal communal social system during the colonial era and the consolidation of the same in the post-Independence period challenged their existence.

Book Scheduled Castes SCs in India

Download or read book Scheduled Castes SCs in India written by Arjun Yallappa Pangannavar and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since India's independence, socio-economic development and the protection of scheduled castes (SCs) from discrimination and exploitation has been a high priority area for the country. The SCs have been socially ostracized, economically exploited, and denied human dignity and a sense of self-worth. According to the 2011 Census, SCs constituted 16.9% of the Indian population. And, sadly, women belonging to SCs are in a far worse situation by all development indicators. Poverty and deprivation affect them more adversely. And yet, despite of their adverse conditions, they contribute significantly to the sustenance and growth of the production system of the country. The development and empowerment of SCs is a commitment enshrined in India's constitution. This is to be done by ensuring equal rights, access to benefits and resources, and empowerment to enable SCs to develop their potential and capacity as agents of social change, through the process of planned development. Planning in recent years has seen a visible shift in focus from the mere expansion of the production of goods and services - and the consequent growth of per capita income - to planning for the enhancement of human well-being. This book examines the problems and constraints of the SCs population. The various measures adopted to ameliorate their socio-economic conditions are also discussed.
