Book Invertebrate Embryology and Reproduction

Download or read book Invertebrate Embryology and Reproduction written by Fatma El-Bawab and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-01-18 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invertebrate Embryology and Reproduction deals with the practical and theoretical objectives of the descriptive embryology of invertebrates, along with discussions on reproduction in these groups of animals. It explains several morphological and anatomical expressions in the field and covers the embryology of invertebrate animals, starting from the Protozoa, to the Echinodermata, the Protochordate and Tunicates. These groups include economically important aquatic invertebrates, such as crustaceans, as well as medically important invertebrates and economic arthropods. Each chapter is preceded by the taxonomy of the discussed phylum and/or the species to enable the reader to locate the systematic position. - Covers phylum definition, general characteristics, classification, reproduction, agametic reproduction, gametic reproduction, spawning, fertilization, development and embryogenesis - Includes recent findings in the area, along with detailed figures and photos that illustrate important concepts - Brings together difficult-to-obtain research data from the field, not only in Egyptian libraries, but globally, and previously only found through specialized references not widely available - Clarifies descriptions with striking photos and electron microscopical studies of different species

Book Metaphysics and the Origin of Species

Download or read book Metaphysics and the Origin of Species written by Michael T. Ghiselin and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In explaining his individuality thesis, Michael T. Ghiselin provides extended discussions of such philosophical topics as definition, the reality of various kinds of groups, and how we classify traits and processes. He develops and applies the implications for general biology and other sciences and makes the case that a better understanding of species and of classification in general puts biologists and paleontologists in a much better position to understand nature in general, and such processes as extinction in particular.

Book Universal Economics

Download or read book Universal Economics written by Gerard Radnitzky and published by Paragon House Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the 50s economics had begun its "imperialist" phase, spreading the economists' theory of behavior to the entire domain of the social sciences (see, e.g., the predecessor to this volume: Radnitzky, G. and Bernholz, P. (eds.). Economic Imperialism. Paragon House 1987, which presents samples). Political economy, the new institutional economics and constitutional economics broadened attention to an open-ended array of social and political problems. The Economic Approach offers a coherent analytic framework to express the unity underlying the structure of problems appearing over the whole of man's experience and, hence, it opens an opportunity for a unified approach. With respect to the human realm it is, in Dr. Radnitzky's view, "Basically an invitation to straight thinking". What gives economics this "imperialist" power is the fact that its key concepts such as scarcity, competition, opportunities, costs, are applicable to all human phenomena and in fact to all of life. In this sense we may speak of "Universal Economics". The contributions to the volume examine what has so far been achieved by applying the Economic Approach outside the traditional field of economics. Some of these include applying it in the life sciences (Michael T. Ghiselin), in the social sciences (James S. Coleman), in the analysis of politics (Peter C. Ordeshook and Vincent Ostrom), by applying it to law (Alan Schwartz), to history (Roger Meiners and Stanley L. Engerman), in the analysis of conflict (Gordon Tullock, Jack Hirshleifer and Anthony de Jasay) and to international relations (Peter Bernholz). Each of the major papers is followed by a commentary from one or two renowned scientists and scholars.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Invertebrate Neurobiology

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Invertebrate Neurobiology written by John H. Byrne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 1304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invertebrates have proven to be extremely useful model systems for gaining insights into the neural and molecular mechanisms of sensory processing, motor control and higher functions such as feeding behavior, learning and memory, navigation, and social behavior. A major factor in their enormous contributions to neuroscience is the relative simplicity of invertebrate nervous systems. In addition, some invertebrates, primarily the molluscs, have large cells, which allow analyses to take place at the level of individually identified neurons. Individual neurons can be surgically removed and assayed for expression of membrane channels, levels of second messengers, protein phosphorylation, and RNA and protein synthesis. Moreover, peptides and nucleotides can be injected into individual neurons. Other invertebrate model systems such as Drosophila and Caenorhabditis elegans offer tremendous advantages for obtaining insights into the neuronal bases of behavior through the application of genetic approaches. The Oxford Handbook of Invertebrate Neurobiology reviews the many neurobiological principles that have emerged from invertebrate analyses, such as motor pattern generation, mechanisms of synaptic transmission, and learning and memory. It also covers general features of the neurobiology of invertebrate circadian rhythms, development, and regeneration and reproduction. Some neurobiological phenomena are species-specific and diverse, especially in the domain of the neuronal control of locomotion and camouflage. Thus, separate chapters are provided on the control of swimming in annelids, crustaea and molluscs, locomotion in hexapods, and camouflage in cephalopods. Unique features of the handbook include chapters that review social behavior and intentionality in invertebrates. A chapter is devoted to summarizing past contributions of invertebrates to the understanding of nervous systems and identifying areas for future studies that will continue to advance that understanding.
