Book The Political Economy of Agricultural Booms

Download or read book The Political Economy of Agricultural Booms written by Mariano Turzi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth analysis of the political economy of soybean production in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, by identifying the dominant private and public actors and control mechanisms that have given rise to a corporate-driven, vertically integrated system of regionalized agricultural production in the Southern Cone of South America. The current agricultural boom surrounding soybean production has been aided by aggressive new agro-technologies, including biotechnology, leading to massive organizational changes in the agricultural sector and a significant rise in the power of special interest groups and corporations. Despite having similar initial production conditions, the pattern of economic activity surrounding soybean production in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, continues to be largely determined by the needs of the multinational corporations involved, rather than national considerations of comparative advantage. The author uses these findings to argue that the new international model of agricultural production empowers chemical and trading multinational companies over national governments.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soybean is the most important oilseed and livestock feed crop in the world. These dual uses are attributed to the crop's high protein content (nearly 40% of seed weight) and oil content (approximately 20%); characteristics that are not rivaled by any other agronomic crop. Across the 10-year period from 2001 to 2010, world soybean production increased from 168 to 258 million metric tons (54% increase). Against the backdrop of soybean's striking ascendancy is increased research interest in the crop throughout the world. Information in this book presents a comprehensive view of research efforts in genetics, plant physiology, agronomy, agricultural economics, and nitrogen relationships that will benefit soybean stakeholders and scientists throughout the world. We hope you enjoy the book.

Book Non Traditional Agriculture and Economic Development

Download or read book Non Traditional Agriculture and Economic Development written by Anthony B. Soskin and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-08-16 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Traditional Agriculture and Economic Development identifies the implications of Brazilian economic development of government support for rapid growth of non-traditional agricultural crops such as soybeans. The volume established a framework for the study of these implications via analyses of: objectives of the Brazilian government in the period 1964-1982; agricultural policies and the policy instruments put into place to achieve these objectives; micro and macro impacts upon the relevant sectors of the economy; importance of soybean expansion upon Brazil's foreigh trade. Finally, the author links the Brazilian experience to some of the classical theories of economic development. He concludes that the considerable success in rapid expansion of the soybean crop has not been without drawbacks, in particular: growth at the expense of traditional staple crops and reliance upon imported technologies.

Book Agriculture and Industry in Brazil

Download or read book Agriculture and Industry in Brazil written by Albert Fishlow and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture and Industry in Brazil is a study of the economics of Brazilian agriculture and industry, with a special focus on the importance of innovation to productivity growth. Albert Fishlow and José Eustáquio Ribeiro Vieira Filho examine technological change in Brazil, highlighting the role of public policy in building institutions and creating an innovation-oriented environment. Fishlow and Vieira Filho tackle the theme of innovation from various angles. They contrast the relationship between state involvement and the private sector in key parts of the Brazilian economy and compare agricultural expansion with growth in the oil and aviation sectors. Fishlow and Vieira Filho argue that modern agriculture is a knowledge-intensive industry and its success in Brazil stems from public institution building. They demonstrate how research has played a key role in productivity growth, showing how prudent innovation policies can leverage knowledge not only within a particular company but also across whole sectors of the economy. The book discusses whether and how Brazil can serve as a model for other middle-income countries eager to achieve higher growth and a more egalitarian distribution of income. An important contribution to comparative, international, and development economics, Agriculture and Industry in Brazil shows how the public success in agriculture became a prototype for advance elsewhere.
