Book The Caribbean and its Linkages with the World A GVAR Model Approach

Download or read book The Caribbean and its Linkages with the World A GVAR Model Approach written by Mr.Mauricio Vargas and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using data from 1980-2017, this paper estimates a Global VAR (GVAR) model taylored for the Caribbean region which includes its major trading partners, representing altogether around 60 percent of the global economy. We provide stilyzed facts of the main interrelations between the Caribbean region and the rest of the world, and then we quantify the impact of external shocks on Caribbean countries through the application of two case studies: i) a change in the international price of oil, and ii) an increase in the U.S. GDP. We confirmed that Caribbean countries are highly exposed to external factors, and that a fall in oil prices and an increase in the U.S. GDP have a positive and large impact on most of them after controlling for financial variables, exchange rate fluctuations and overall price changes. The results from the model help to disentangle effects from various channels that interact at the same time, such as flows of tourists, trade of goods, and changes in economic conditions in the largest economies of the globe.

Book The Caribbean Blue Economy

Download or read book The Caribbean Blue Economy written by Peter Clegg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blue Economy is emerging on the global scene as a powerful and persuasive new concept for sustainable development based on economic activities associated with the ocean. Several regions globally have adopted this concept at national and regional levels, including the Caribbean. Given the complex, multisectoral and multilevel nature of the Blue Economy, it is clear that different approaches will be needed for different regions. Hence, this volume explores the opportunities, threats and risks involved in operationalising the Blue Economy in the Wider Caribbean Region, defined as northern Brazil to the USA and all mainland and island countries and territories in-between. The first part of the book looks at where the region stands in the global picture regarding adoption of the Blue Economy and what is planned. The second set of chapters examines key crosscutting issues such as ecosystem services, climate change and governance at national and regional levels that could make or break the Blue Economy initiative. The book then goes on to explore the main sectoral activities that will constitute the Blue Economies in the region: fisheries, tourism, shipping and transport, renewable energy, oil and gas, seabed mining and waste management are all considered. The book ends with a synthesis of the political and technical requirements to overcome threats and take advantage of opportunities in the Blue Economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caribbean economies have been faced with mounting challenges arising from the increasing pace of economic globalization. The financial crisis of 2007 further exacerbated economic instability due to high foreign debt, lack of competitiveness, declining productivity, and high unemployment and underemployment. This in turn has precipitated increasing social and environmental problems, including poverty, inequality, crime and violence, and environmental degradation, all of which require new perspectives and policy approaches for transformative change and sustainable development. In this two volume multidisciplinary edited book The Modern Caribbean Economy, Volume I provides scholars and practitioners with alternative theoretical perspectives and concrete policy recommendations, while Volume II discusses economic, industrial, and social problems facing the Caribbean along with pragmatic proposals to successfully deal with these, while building local resilience and enhancing institutional strength in the region.

Book Handbook of Caribbean Economies

Download or read book Handbook of Caribbean Economies written by Robert E. Looney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to illustrate the uniqueness of the economies of the countries and territories of the Caribbean as well as the similarities they share with other regions. While most countries in the region share many of the characteristics of middle-income countries, theirs is a matter of extremes. Their generally small size suggests a fragility not found elsewhere. While much of the world is beginning to feel some effects of climate change, the Caribbean is ground zero. These factors suggest a difficult road ahead, but the chapters presented in this volume aim to help to spur the search for creative solutions to the region’s problems. The chapters, written by expert contributors, examine the Caribbean economies from several perspectives. Many break new ground in questioning past policy mindsets, while developing new approaches to many of the traditional constraints limiting growth in the region. The volume is organized in four sections. Part I examines commonalities, including issues surrounding small economies, tourism, climate change and energy security. Part II looks at obstacles to sustained progress, for example debt, natural disasters and crime. In Part III chapters consider the specific role of external influences, including the USA and the European Union, the People's Republic of China, as well as regional co-operation. The volume concludes in Part IV with country case studies intended to provide a sense of the diversity that runs through the region.

Book Caricom Single Market and Economy

Download or read book Caricom Single Market and Economy written by Kenneth O. Hall and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) has for years been touted as the most critical pillar in Caribbean regional integration. Yet, for years, the implementation of the CSME stalled due to the absence of a common view as to its feasibility, the speed of its implementation, the institutional capacity, programming for public education and ultimately, its benefits. In this work, a special edition of the Integrationist, and put together by the UWI-CARICOM project, the CSME is explained in all its dimensions. The contents cover the background to the establishment of the CSME and perspectives on its implementation. The main provisions and expected benefits of the Single Market are also presented along with the strategic framework and efforts at resource mobilisation to make the CSME a reality. The importance of the Caribbean Court of Justice to the effective functioning of the CSME is also outlined. The book concludes with a call to the member states for a unity in both understanding and action in the pursuit of integration, not as choice, but rather as necessity. The work is complemented by the inclusion of several appendices notably the original 1989 Grand Anse Declaration, the 2005 PetroCaribe Agreement as well as an indicative plan of action by priorities and an outline of major technical assistance resource gaps. "

Book Economic Transformation and Job Creation

Download or read book Economic Transformation and Job Creation written by The Integrationist and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of economic transformation is an immediate and practical one for the English-speaking Caribbean. In the postindependence period, Caribbean governments seemed blissfully unaware that the inability to transform their economies was leading to serious unemployment problems. The statistics are quite stark. Unemployment rates in the Caribbean range from 6% in the more prosperous states to 23% in the less prosperous ones. This use of economic transformation and job creation continues to be a major challenge in the first decade of the twenty-first Century. This is the subject that is treated with impressive urgency in this volume entitled Economic Transformation and Job Creation: The Caribbean Experience.
