Book Macroeconomics and Monetary Theory

Download or read book Macroeconomics and Monetary Theory written by Harry G. Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroeconomics is an outgrowth from the main stream of classical monetary theory following Keynes. Keynes changed the emphasis from determination of the level of money prices to determination of the level of output and employment. He also changed the key relationship from demand and supply of money as determining the price level to the relationship between consumption expenditure and income, in conjunction with private investment expenditure, as determining the level of output and therefore employment demanded. The income multiplier replaced the velocity of circulation as the key concept of monetary theory. The tendency of the past twenty-five years has been to reintegrate Keynesian and classical monetary theory into one general system of analysis. Moreover, as inflation has succeeded mass unemployment as a major policy problem, interest in classical monetary theory has revived, while Keynesians have increasingly' emphasized the monetary aspects of Keynesian theory. The proper contemporary distinction is not between two separate branches of economic theory, but between two areas of application or contexts of the theory of rational maximizing behavior. In the one (the microeconomic) context, it is assumed either that the overall workings of the economic system can be disregarded, or that the macroeconomic relationships are in full general equilibrium. In the other (the macroeconomic) context, it is assumed that the maximizing decisions of individual economic units (firms and households) will not necessarily add up to a macroeconomic equilibrium, but will produce a disequilibrium situation that will in the course of time produce changes in the individual decisions.

Book The Econometric Analysis of Recurrent Events in Macroeconomics and Finance

Download or read book The Econometric Analysis of Recurrent Events in Macroeconomics and Finance written by Don Harding and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global financial crisis highlighted the impact on macroeconomic outcomes of recurrent events like business and financial cycles, highs and lows in volatility, and crashes and recessions. At the most basic level, such recurrent events can be summarized using binary indicators showing if the event will occur or not. These indicators are constructed either directly from data or indirectly through models. Because they are constructed, they have different properties than those arising in microeconometrics, and how one is to use them depends a lot on the method of construction. This book presents the econometric methods necessary for the successful modeling of recurrent events, providing valuable insights for policymakers, empirical researchers, and theorists. It explains why it is inherently difficult to forecast the onset of a recession in a way that provides useful guidance for active stabilization policy, with the consequence that policymakers should place more emphasis on making the economy robust to recessions. The book offers a range of econometric tools and techniques that researchers can use to measure recurrent events, summarize their properties, and evaluate how effectively economic and statistical models capture them. These methods also offer insights for developing models that are consistent with observed financial and real cycles. This book is an essential resource for students, academics, and researchers at central banks and institutions such as the International Monetary Fund.

Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic approach to analyzing macroeconomic developments, focusing on macroeconomic accounts, analysis, and the effects of selected policies on a nation's economy. The first part of the book describes the data, accounts, and analysis of the four main macroeconomic sectors — real, external, fiscal, and monetary — and discusses the accounting and economic relations among these sectors, using a flow of funds approach. Key indicators are presented for each sector and used to show how macroeconomic developments can be assessed and problems identified. The second part of the book discusses fiscal, monetary, and exchange rate policy and their economic implications. Book The Integration of Macro and Microeconomic Relations in Dynamic Policy Models

Download or read book The Integration of Macro and Microeconomic Relations in Dynamic Policy Models written by Ary Lars Bovenberg and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1990-04-01 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines how two types of fiscal policy models, namely, dynamic macroeconomic models and applied general equilibrium models, have integrated macro- and microeconomic relationships within a framework of intertemporal equilibrium. After emphasizing the potential advantages of integrating macro- and microeconomic relations, the study discusses the limitations of intertemporal equilibrium models--in particular the weaknesses of saving and investment theories incorporated in the models. It concludes that, despite recent important advances, policymakers need to exercise caution when they interpret results derived from these models.

The Bank's econometric research, which I have had the privilege to direct since 1971, sought to map this territory gradually and thus to obtain the el ements for building a monetary model for the Netherlands. As regards the research strategy, I opted for the performance of studies on specific aspects. The quarterly model MORKMON presented in this monograph may be regarded as the conclusion of this research programme. When building the model and writing this monograph, I made heavy and unre mitting demands on the staff of the Econometric Research and Special Studies Department. lowe a debt of gratitude to them all. Book Handbook of Monetary Economics 3A

Download or read book Handbook of Monetary Economics 3A written by Benjamin M. Friedman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-11-17 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have monetary policies matured during the last decade? The recent downturn in economies worldwide have put monetary policies in a new spotlight. In addition to their investigations of new tools, models, and assumptions, they look carefully atrecent evidence on subjects as varied as price-setting, inflation persistence, the private sector's formation of inflation expectations, and the monetary policy transmission mechanism. They also reexamine standard presumptions about the rationality of asset markets and other fundamentals. Stopping short of advocating conclusions about the ideal conduct of policy, the authors focus instead on analytical methods and the changing interactions among the ingredients and properties that inform monetary models. The influences between economic performance and monetary policy regimes can be both grand and muted, and this volume clarifies the present state of this continually evolving relationship. Presents extensive coverage of monetary policy theories with an eye toward questions raised by the recent financial crisis Explores the policies and practices used in formulating and transmitting monetary policiesQuestions fiscal-monetary connections and encourages new thinking about the business cycle itself Observes changes in the formulation of monetary policies over the last 25 years.

Book Money Theory and Practice

Download or read book Money Theory and Practice written by Jin Cao and published by Springer. This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides an introduction to modern monetary economics for advanced undergraduates, highlighting the lessons learned from the recent financial crisis. The book presents both the core New Keynesian model and recent advances, taking into account financial frictions, and discusses recent research on an intuitive level based on simple static and two-period models, but also prepares readers for an extension to a truly dynamic analysis. Further, it offers a systematic perspective on monetary policy, covering a wide range of models to help readers gain a better understanding of controversial issues. Part I examines the long-run perspective, addressing classical monetary policy issues such as determination of the price level and interaction between monetary and fiscal policy. Part II introduces the core New Keynesian model, characterizing optimal monetary policy to stabilize short-term shocks. It discusses rules vs. discretion and the challenges arising from control errors, imperfect information and robustness issues. It also analyzes optimal control in the presence of an effective lower bound. Part III focuses on modelling financial frictions. It identifies the transmission mechanisms of monetary policy via banking and introduces models with incomplete markets, principal-agent problems, maturity mismatch and leverage cycles, to show why investors’ and intermediaries’ own stakes play a key role in lending with pro-cyclical features. In addition, it presents a tractable model for handling liquidity management and demonstrates that the need to sell assets in crisis amplifies the volatility of the real economy. Lastly, the book discusses the relation between monetary policy and financial stability, addressing systemic risk and the role of macro-prudential regulation.
