Book excerpt: The present study contributes to the extant literature by assessing how financial and human developments moderate the incidence of vulnerable female employment on female labour force participation in Cameroon for the period 1987 to 2020 using the generalized least squares (GLS) estimation approach. Human development and financial development moderating or policy variables are also employed in order to improve space for policy implication. It is apparent from the findings that human development in the perspective of the human development index (HDI) and broad money supply are necessary and sufficient conditions to moderate vulnerable female employment for female labour force participation. Accordingly, HDI thresholds of between 0.591 and 0.634 are needed to reverse to the negative incidence of female vulnerable employment on female labour force participation. Furthermore, a threshold of 30.294 (% of GDP) of broad money supply is also needed to reverse the negative incidence of vulnerable female employment on female labour force participation. Other implications for policy are discussed.

Book excerpt: Cameroon is an example of a developing country where the transition from agriculture to services has defied standard patterns seen in developed countries. While prior research has explored this shift's impact on economic growth, its effects on women's representation in the labour market have been overlooked. This study addresses this gap by examining how changes in the tertiary sector affect women's employment. Decomposition analysis based on 461 Cameroonian firms indicates a 6.2 per cent feminization pattern over the past decade, primarily driven by increased female employment in wholesale and construction industries. This growth results from within-industry effects rather than reallocation effects, emphasizing the significance of internal industry factors over external influences like government policies or broader economic changes. Importantly, econometric estimations, adjusting for fixed effects, endogeneity, and selection biases, reveal that an inadequately trained workforce hinders further feminization. The paper concludes with recommendations for promoting gender equality in Cameroon and across Africa.

To achieve this objective, the Cameroon Household Consumption Survey of 2007 was used. The main question considered in this paper is why women paid-employment and self-employment wages are relatively low. In a whole, what are the underlying factors that generate and explains wage gap between men and women householders in employment?The topic of this paper helps to explain and analyse the functioning of the Cameroonian labour market. Using available data survey, this paper is the first to identify and decompose the causes of paid-employment and self-employment gender wage gap in Cameroon. Firstly, the paper uses the Oaxaca-Blinder Decomposition to explain wage gap. Thereafter, the Quantile Regression Decomposition using Machado and Mata approach is applied in order to see the gap at different levels of wage distribution. The main finding indicate that; in both methods, the wage gap is due to unexplained component in self-employment and explained component in paid-employment, particularly with strong effects at the extreme of wage distribution. Narrowing the gender wage gap by eliminating discrimination and approving the principle of equal opportunity; supporting policies that reduce obstacles preventing women from starting and developing their businesses to encourage more women to become entrepreneurs; achieving harmonization between work and family life.

We document declining women's relative wages and labor force participation in China during the last two decades, despite rapid growth and expansion of the service sector. Using household data, we provide evidence consistent with a U-shaped relationship between economic development and women's labor market outcomes. Using a model of structural transformation, we show that labor market barriers for women have increased over time. Model counterfactuals suggest that removing these barriers and increasing service sector productivity can boost both gender equality and economic growth in China.

Book excerpt: We study whether higher gender equality facilitates economic growth by enabling better allocation of a valuable resource: female labor. By allocating female labor to its more productive use, we hypothesize that reducing gender inequality should disproportionately benefit industries with typically higher female share in their employment relative to other industries. Specifically, we exploit within-country variation across industries to test whether those that typically employ more women grow relatively faster in countries with ex-ante lower gender inequality. The test allows us to identify the causal effect of gender inequality on industry growth in value-added and labor productivity. Our findings show that gender inequality affects real economic outcomes.

They have traditionally been viewed as repositories of information and wisdom, and are critical pillars of the community but as the HIV/AIDS pandemic destroys family systems, the elderly increasingly have to deal with the loss of their own support while absorbing the additional responsibilities of caring for their orphaned grandchildren. Aging in Sub-Saharan Africa explores ways to promote U.S. research interests and to augment the sub-Saharan governments' capacity to address the many challenges posed by population aging. Five major themes are explored in the book such as the need for a basic definition of "older person," the need for national governments to invest more in basic research and the coordination of data collection across countries, and the need for improved dialogue between local researchers and policy makers. This book makes three major recommendations: 1) the development of a research agenda 2) enhancing research opportunity and implementation and 3) the translation of research findings.
