Book Explaining European Identity Formation

Download or read book Explaining European Identity Formation written by Stephanie Bergbauer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes people identify with Europe? To answer this question, this book analyzes the development and determinants of a common European identity among EU citizens from the Maastricht Treaty in 1992 to the recent financial and economic crisis. The author examines citizens’ identification with Europe for all EU member states, and systematically explores the theoretical and empirical implications of two turning points in the recent history of EU integration, namely the EU’s enlargement to Central and Eastern Europe in 2004/2007 and the financial and economic crisis that started in 2008. The book integrates theoretical approaches to European identity in sociology, social-psychology and EU public opinion research in a comprehensive model for explaining individual identification with Europe. The empirical analysis employs a multilevel framework to systematically assess the influence of individual characteristics and the political, economic, and social context on citizens’ feelings of identity. The long analysis period spanning from 1992 to the present allows inferences to be drawn about the long-term developments in the sources of European identification as well as the immediate impact of EU enlargement and the crisis on the determinants of European identification.

Book Labor Market Institutions and the Cost of Recessions

Download or read book Labor Market Institutions and the Cost of Recessions written by Mr.Tom Krebs and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the effect of two labor market institutions, unemployment insurance (UI) and job search assistance (JSA), on the output cost and welfare cost of recessions. The paper develops a tractable incomplete-market model with search unemployment, skill depreciation during unemployment, and idiosyncratic as well as aggregate labor market risk. The theoretical analysis shows that an increase in JSA and a reduction in UI reduce the output cost of recessions by making the labor market more fluid along the job finding margin and thus making the economy more resilient to macroeconomic shocks. In contarst, the effect of JSA and UI on the welfare cost of recessions is in general ambiguous. The paper also provides a quantitative appliation to the German labor market reforms of 2003-2005, the so-called Hartz reforms, which improved JSA (Hartz III reform) and reduced UI (Hartz IV reform). According to the baseline calibration, the two labor market reforms led to a substantial reduction in the output cost of recessions and a moderate reduction in the welfare cost of recessions in Germany.

Book Understanding Innovation in Emerging Economic Spaces

Download or read book Understanding Innovation in Emerging Economic Spaces written by Grzegorz Micek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small number of countries, regions, cities, and localities are powerful gatekeepers and generate the bulk of creative and innovative ideas, while the majority is largely excluded. This book looks at neglected, but emerging innovation centres analysed from various spatial and organizational perspectives; ranging from entire countries and regions to individual firms and small neighbourhoods. Bringing together leading scholars from various disciplines, it examines a variety of economic sectors including biotechnology, agrotourism, and the food retail industry. The authors employ various, often contradictory, concepts, ranging from local buzz and the global pipeline, through an analysis of collective learning processes to geographical embeddedness, using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The purpose of the book is twofold: investigating changes occurring in the regions and cities under transformation and attempting to find common and unique mechanisms behind these changes. Consequently, the authors shed light on the scale and scope of the innovativeness of selected economic and social processes.

Today the denationalization of money is in full swing: digital currencies like Bitcoin are fully independent of banks and governments. This book explains the phenomenon of decentralized, stateless money in an easily understandable and entertaining way. It also provides a basic insight into the Austrian School of Economics. The Austrian School's most prominent masterminds, Ludwig von Mises, Friedrich August von Hayek and Murry N. Rothbard, have explained why we must overcome our present debt-based monetary system, which widens the gap between the rich and the poor. Bitcoin is the world's first global payment system that is open to anyone on this planet with Internet access. Payments are cheap, fast and cannot be blocked. Book Radical Equality in Education

Download or read book Radical Equality in Education written by Joanne Larson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tinkering with the current educational system from within has not provided a just and equitable education for all children. In this book, acclaimed education theorist Joanne Larson poses basic questions about the nature and purpose of schooling. Proposing that what is needed is a new purpose that is more consistent with contemporary knowledge production processes—one that moves beyond the either/or binary of preparing workers/citizens in a competitive global economy or a democracy, Larson argues that the only real solution is to start over in U.S. education—the purpose of schooling should be to facilitate human learning, meaning making, and knowledge production toward just and equitable education for all. Radical Equality in Education offers a new ontological starting point and a new theoretical framing that would follow from it; articulates theoretical, curricular, pedagogical, and assessment principles that frame a real plan for fundamental change in American education, and presents examples of what these ideas might look like in schools and communities.
