En el libro se recogen y amplían algunos de estos estudios, investigaciones y reflexiones sobre el concepto del desarrollo humano y sus conexiones con la globalización, los modelos económicos, la lucha contra la pobreza, la cooperación internacional al desarrollo, el comercio, las instituciones, el crédito, la ecología, la cultura o el género. El desarrollo humano tiene que ver con la lucha contra la pobreza, pero también con el objetivo de que todo ser humano, independientemente de su procedencia y de su lugar de residencia, tenga la oportunidad de vivir una vida digna, larga, saludable y creativa. Por lo tanto, el desarrollo humano va más allá del desarrollo estrictamente económico, lo cual se refleja en la visión amplia e interdisciplinar que se propone en esta obra, entendiendo la economía en su carácter social y humanístico y reconociendo la validez de las aportaciones desde otras disciplinas.

With the Western Hemisphere’s ignoble history of enslavement and violence towards African peoples, and the strong anti-black racism that still pervades society, the African diaspora in the Americas has turned to alternative practices of socio-economic organization. Conscientious and collective organizing is thus a means of creating meaningful livelihoods. In this volume, fourteen scholars explore the concept of the “Black social economy,” bringing together innovative research on the lived experience of Afro-descendants in business and society in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, and the United States. The case studies in this book feature horrific legacies of enslavement, colonization, and racism, and they recount the myriad ways that persons of African heritage have built humane alternatives to the dominant market economy that excludes them. Together, they shed necessary light on the ways in which the Black race has been overlooked in the social economy literature.

BEPA (2011) defines social innovation as, ‘innovations that are social in both their ends and means’. However, though Social Innovation is a widely-used term; its conceptual understanding and the specific relation to social change remains under explored. People Centered Social Innovation: Global perspectives on an Emerging Paradigm attempts to revisit and extend the existing understanding of Social Innovation in practice by focusing upon the lived realities of marginalized groups and communities. The emerging field of people-centered development is placed in dialogue with theory and concepts from the more established field of social innovation to create a new approach; one that adopts a global perspective, engaging with very different experiences of marginality across the global north and south. Theoretically, ‘People Centered Social Innovation: Global Perspectives on an Emerging Paradigm’ draws upon ‘northern’ understandings of change and improvement as well as ‘southern’ theory concerns for epistemological diversity and meaning making. The result is an experiment aimed at reimagining research and practice that seriously needs to center the actor in processes of social transformation.
