Book excerpt: An extensive ecological and epizoological survey of endemic diseases was conducted in the Great Salt Lake Desert region. Native mammals, birds, and livestock were tested for Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Q fever, Tularemia, Brucella, Psittacosis, and Bedsonia group of organisms. Susceptibility, transmission and immunity studies were carried out with several animal species, and ectoparasite vector transmission experiments were conducted. An ecological study in connection with the zoonoses of the area was carried out with special emphasis on lagomorph and rodent population dynamics. In association with the rodent ecology studies, a control project employing the insecticidal and pesticidal compound, Endrin, was conducted. (Author).

Included in this total were 3,104 rodents, 1,425 other mammals, and 544 birds. In addition 6,699 ectoparasites associated with these animals were also collected and processed. This total was made up of 2,716 ticks, 3,091 fleas, 474 mites and 418 lice. Also collected and tested were 674 deerflies and 200 blood-sucking gnats.
