Book excerpt: Fifteen years ago, approximately half the world population was estimated to live in continental and insular South-East Asia (Burma, Thailand, Kampuchea, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Philippines). Then the region had a population growth of four million people every month, and the problem of malnutrition was acute for the rural population. International agricultural development organisations decided that their primary aim would be to double existing levels of agricultural production and, taking account of population growth, to double it again by the end of the century (Whyte 1976). Today, while global issues have greatly affected the parameters of the problem, the situation remains both serious and difficult. Despite impressive efforts in education and health, Indonesia for example, where population (179 millions) growth eased off only slightly between 1980 and 1990 (from 2. 3 percent to 1. 9 percent), is having to cope with increasing difficulties in managing natural resources and particularly its evanescent forest assets which, until 1986, were the second largest source of national revenue. Indonesia has the second largest surface area of tropical rain forests in the world (after Brazil) and thus all the problems linked with management and disappearance of those forests. The latest estimate gives a figure of 109 million hectares of forest in 1990, of which 40. 8 million hectares are production forests (Anon. -F AO 1990).

Moreover peatlands that have been drained and cleared for plantations are a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. This new book explains the degradation of peat soils and outlines a potential course of action to deal with the catastrophe looming over the region. Concerted action will be required to reduce peatland fires, and a successful policy needs to enhance social welfare and economic survival, support natural conservation and provide a return on investment if there is to be a sustainable society in the peatlands. This book argues that regeneration is possible through a new policy of people’s forestry that includes reforestation and rewetting peat soils. The data come from a major long-term research effort—the humanosphere project—that coordinates work done by researchers from the physical, natural and human or social sciences.

Book excerpt: While we should celebrate the bicentennial of naming the Sumatran rhinoceros (SR), the only extant population on earth might be on the island of Sumatra. Since Strien's 1986 study in Mamas Valley, Leuser, very little more has been learned about how this species distributed and what factors are influencing its extirpation. This study is the first conducted in Sumatra at an Island-wide scale. Using hierarchical models, I estimate the occurrence rates (%) and indices of abundance of SR on three remaining population areas: Leuser Landscape (LL) in 2007 (2.77%, 26 (CI 12-61)), Way Kambas (WK) in 2008 (33.58%, 27 (CI 14-50)) and Bukit Barisan Selatan (BBS) in 2010 (36.4%, 31 (CI 19-66)). Primary dry land forest and rivers are factors affecting SR occurrence in LL, but the index of abundance also is affected by deforestation, roughness of terrain, and and a vegetation index. The index of abundance in WK is more affected by major roads, and brush and savannah cover types, and the occurrence there is additionally affected by deforestation. Secondary dry land forest, regular roads, and deforestation is affecting both the occurrence rate and index of abundance of SR in BBS. The identification of these environmental and disturbance factors is translated into spatially explicit map that can be used to update the IUCN distribution map. In LL, by comparison to the historical distribution based on Strien (1986), the small population in Bendahara Mountain might still persist outside the core population in Mamas Valley.

Book excerpt: Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) populations continue to decline due to habitat loss, poaching and conflict with humans. In Sumatra, elephant populations are fragmented into small isolated populations and increasingly cause conflict with humans. Yet, habitat loss due to the rapid land conversion for development is continuing an alarming situation. Developing effective land conservation strategies for elephants is difficult because there is little information available on foraging ecology, habitat use, movements and home range behaviors. I conducted a study on these topics in Seblat, Bengkulu Province, Sumatra during 2007-2008. The five important families of plants in the elephant diet in Sumatra ar: Moraceae, Arecaceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae, and Euphorbiacea. Elephants in Seblat tend to browse more than graze and elephants tend to browse more during the wet season. The nutritional quality (Crude Protein, Calcium, Phosphorus and Gross Energy) of elephant diet in Seblat is suitable to support population reproduction and growth. Home range size of one telemetered 97.4 km2 for the MCP and 95.0 km2 for the 95% fixed kernel. There was no relation between average monthly elephant home range sizes and rainfall, nor any correlation between monthly elephant movement distances and rainfall. Vegetation productivity, as measured by the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), was probably the factor most affecting elephant movements compared to the distances to rivers and ex-logging roads on the SECC. Resource selection analyzes indicate that elephants in Seblat seem to select medium canopy and open canopy areas more than expected. Similarly, habitat ranking using compositional analysis shows that in 2nd order and 3rd order selection, medium canopy and open canopy were the two habitat types with a greater level of used. Habitat use based on diurnal and nocturnal elephant activities indicates that elephants preferred closed canopy habitat compare to the open canopy habitat during the day. The results of this study suggest wide conservation implications for elephants on Sumatra, helping to guide effective land use conservation programs and provide scientific guideline to restore disturbed habitat and select priority areas for Sumatran elephants.
