Download or read book The Ecology of Deep and Shallow Coral Reefs written by Marjorie L. Reaka and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ecology of Deep and Shallow Coral Reefs: Results of a Workshop on Coral Reef Ecology Held by the American Society of Zoologists, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, December 1983 Benthic invertebrate populations on coral reefs and in other marine communities often occupy several habitat types and display very different size structures in those habitats. The explanation for such size differences may lie in recruitment, mortality, or growth rate differences. These possible causal factors can be separated by carefully monitoring populations of marked individuals or colonies. Book The Ecology of Coral Reefs Vol 3

Download or read book The Ecology of Coral Reefs Vol 3 written by Marjorie L. Reaka and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ecology of Coral Reefs, Vol. 3: Results of a Workshop on Coral Reef Ecology Held by the American Society of Zoologists, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, December 1983 Ronald Karlson summarizes the conclusions of his discussion section on a related topic, life history patterns. An emerging body of research demonstrates that the observed growth rates, form, and longevity of corals along depth gradients result from complex interactions between physical light and wave disturbance) and biotic variables. Recent research shows that sublethal phenomena such as injuries due to physical and biotic agents have significant implications for growth and reproduction in many sessile reef organisms. These processes can vary significantly in different habitats. This discussion group also addressed the important topic of ecological and evolutionary patterns in solitary vs. Colonial organisms on coral reefs. The importance of fission, fusion, and fragmentation (and thus of colony size) in both solitary and colonial species received particular attention as a productive avenue for future research. Mark Hixon lead the discussion section on community structure and function. Coral reef ecologists have been in the forefront of the debate on whether communities are organized by stable predictable processes or whether they merely represent independent populations in shifting states of disequilibria.
