Book Standing between Life and Extinction

Download or read book Standing between Life and Extinction written by David L. Propst and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North American deserts—lands of little water—have long been home to a surprising diversity of aquatic life, from fish to insects and mollusks. With European settlement, however, water extraction, resource exploitation, and invasive species set many of these native aquatic species on downward spirals. In this book, conservationists dedicated to these creatures document the history of their work, the techniques and philosophies that inform it, and the challenges and opportunities of the future. A precursor to this book, Battle Against Extinction, laid out the scope of the problem and related conservation activities through the late 1980s. Since then, many nascent conservation programs have matured, and researchers have developed new technologies, improved and refined methods, and greatly expanded our knowledge of the myriad influences on the ecology and dynamics of these species. Standing between Life and Extinction brings the story up to date. While the future for some species is more secure than thirty years ago, others are less fortunate. Calling attention not only to iconic species like the razorback sucker, Gila trout, and Devils Hole pupfish, but also to other fishes and obscure and fascinating invertebrates inhabiting intermittent aquatic habitats, this book explores the scientific, social, and political challenges of preserving these aquatic species and their habitats amid an increasingly charged political discourse and in desert regions characterized by a growing human population and rapidly changing climate.

Book Restoring Colorado River Ecosystems

Download or read book Restoring Colorado River Ecosystems written by Robert W. Adler and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-06-22 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past century, humans have molded the Colorado River to serve their own needs, resulting in significant impacts to the river and its ecosystems. Today, many scientists, public officials, and citizens hope to restore some of the lost resources in portions of the river and its surrounding lands. Environmental restoration on the scale of the Colorado River basin is immensely challenging; in addition to an almost overwhelming array of technical difficulties, it is fraught with perplexing questions about the appropriate goals of restoration and the extent to which environmental restoration must be balanced against environmental changes designed to promote and sustain human economic development. Restoring Colorado River Ecosystems explores the many questions and challenges surrounding the issue of large-scale restoration of the Colorado River basin, and of large-scale restoration in general. Robert W. Adler evaluates the relationships among the laws, policies, and institutions governing use and management of the Colorado River for human benefit and those designed to protect and restore the river and its environment. He examines and critiques the often challenging interactions among law, science, economics, and politics within which restoration efforts must operate. Ultimately, he suggests that a broad concept of “restoration” is needed to navigate those uncertain waters, and to strike an appropriate balance between human and environmental needs. While the book is primarily about restoration of Colorado River ecosystems, it is also about uncertainty, conflict, competing values, and the nature, pace, and implications of environmental change. It is about our place in the natural environment, and whether there are limits to that presence we ought to respect. And it is about our responsibility to the ecosystems we live in and use.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The razorback sucker, which has declined in abundance in the upper Colorado River primarily because of man's impact on the environment, has been recommended for listing as "threatened" in the U.S. Department of Interior's list of threatened or endangered species. During the present investigation, razorback suckers were nevertheless found in relatively large concentrations at two restricted locations -- the mouth of the Yampa River and a flooded gravel pit connected to the Colorado River near Grand Junction, Colorado.

Book Historical Changes in Large River Fish Assemblages of the Americas

Download or read book Historical Changes in Large River Fish Assemblages of the Americas written by John N. Rinne and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dramatic changes have occurred in the functioning of larger rivers because of social values and policies, land use, inchannel causes, and alien species. These changes have resulted in the reduction in range and abundance of many native fish species. This book describes the historical changes observed in the fish assemblages of 27 large rivers in North, Central, and South America. A synthesizing chapter highlights common and distinct patterns among the rivers and their stressors. The book focuses on entire fish assemblages, including the many species that do not enter fisheries. It will be of interest to both fishery biologists and aquatic ecologists who are concerned with the status and trends in biodiversity and biointegrity. Contains historical information as well as new research and monitoring results, including research on metapopulations, genetics, and life history strategies.
