Book excerpt: Domestic livestock in Africa are of importance not only as a source of milk and meat but also as a source of animal traction enabling farmers to cultivate larger areas, with crops providing the staple foods. Trypanosomosis, a parasitic disease transmitted cyclically by the tsetse fly (Glossina spp.), is arguably still the main constraint to livestock production on the continent, preventing full use of the land to feed the rapidly increasing human population. Sleeping sickness, the disease caused in humans by species of Trypanosoma, is an important and neglected disease posing a threat to millions of people in tsetse-infested areas. Often wrongly thought of as a disease of the past, the prevalence of human sleeping sickness is increasing in many areas. Although alternative methods to control the disease are being investigated, such as immunological approaches, use of chemotherapy or exploitation of the trypanotolerance trait, it is only control or eradication of the tsetse fly vector which will remove the threat of the disease rather than providing a better means of "living" with it. As a result of the economic impact of tsetse-transmitted Trypanosomosis, a large amount of research literature has been produced. This book provides a comprehensive review of this literature. The text is divided into four parts: tsetse biology and ecology, epidemiology, vector control and control of trypanosomosis. The book is invaluable for medical and veterinary entomologists, parasitologists and epidemiologists.

For comparison, cases from the Americas (whales in the Arctic, sea turtles in the Caribbean, and plants in the Amazon) and Central Asia are also included. The relationship between plants, animals, and humans in Asia is quite unique from a global perspective. For example, "satoyama" in Japan means ecotone area, or the boundary between a village and a forest. There, as the number of inhabitants declines, bears, wild boars, and other animals increasingly ravage crops, sometimes attacking humans as well. By showing the regional nature of human-animal and human-plant interactions in Asia, this book provides for the first time a framework for understanding the world's animal and plant-human relationships. It is assumed that the relationships between humans and animals and plants during this period were diverse, including hunting, taming, semi-domestication, and full domestication. At the same time, for regions outside of Asia, the extent to which these diverse relationships were adapted and how diversity was formed is explained from the perspective of historical ecology. Customers can expect to derive perspectives on the coexistence of human-animal and plant-animal relationships from this book in the near future. The conservation of rare species, diverse habitats, and biodiversity is a central theme in considering the relationship between modern civilization and the global environment. Increasingly it is felt that more sophisticated methods are called for, specifically designed for the materials and problems at issue. To this end the editors were asked by organizers of the First Intercongress of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences to develop a symposium on this general subject. With the title of this book, the symposium was held in Amsterdam on April 23-25, 1981. Invited were mathematical statisticians who were known to have an acquaintance with and interest in anthropological problems, together with anthropologists and human geneticists who consider multivariate methodology essential for their research. This volume constitutes an updated and revised selection from among the papers presented, together with a few supplementary papers by authors who were not present but whose work fills out the intended coverage and makes the volume more complete with respect to the state of affairs in the field. The papers are devoted both to new methodology and to its practical application. Mathematical statisticians may wish to know more about the biological nature and the kinds of materials and samples on which mathematical thinking can be exercised. Anthropologists as practitioners may not be fully aware of the possibilities and limitations in particular mathematical models and methods. Our purpose has been to bring the two groups together, for personal discussions across disciplinary lines as well as within disciplines.
