Book Identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas in the Bay of Fundy Gulf of Maine

Download or read book Identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas in the Bay of Fundy Gulf of Maine written by M.-I. Buzeta and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is meant as a planning tool for managers who must consider the management of a number of present and proposed habitat-altering activities prosecuted in these areas. Based on the fact that Head Harbour / West Isles / The Passages were identified as EBSAs because of their benthic habitat attributes, such activities pose an elevated concern. The consensus of workshop participants was to recommend the application of protection measures for Head Harbour / West Isles / The Passages.":--from abstract.

Book The Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life

Download or read book The Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life written by Arthur N. Popper and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 2138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this landmark new work, the major authorities in the field from around the world present a wealth of research data, coverage of regulatory issues, and thinking about the effects of man-made noise on marine mammals, turtles, amphibians, fishes, and invertebrates. The various themes of the book were chosen to cover the wide range of basic and cutting edge information on this topic. They include the hearing abilities of aquatic animals; communication by means of underwater sound; the description of aquatic soundscapes; different sound sources and their characteristics; the effects of sound on behavior; and assessing, mitigating, and monitoring the effects of aquatic noise. Emphasis is on the cross-fertilization of ideas and findings across species and noise sources. With over 140 contributions from leading researchers, the sources of underwater sound and their effects are discussed in detail.

Book Marine and Coastal Systems of the Quoddy Region New Brunswick

Download or read book Marine and Coastal Systems of the Quoddy Region New Brunswick written by Martin Lewis Hall Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the main marine and coastal biological systems of Passamaquoddy Bay and adjacent waters and the oceanographic and meteorological characteristics of the area. Subject areas begin with meteorolgy and oceanography. The second group covers the intertidal systems with chapters on rocky intertidal shores, rock pools, coarse sedimentary shores and salt marshes. The third general section covers hard and sedimentary sublittoral habitats. Following chapters discuss pelagic systems under the headings fishes, phytoplankton, larger zooplankton, and microzooplankton. Three chapters deal with the birds, amphibians and reptiles, and marine mammals. Finally coastal vegetation is described.

Book A Characterization of the Physical Environment at Eelgrass Zostera Marina Sites Along the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia

Download or read book A Characterization of the Physical Environment at Eelgrass Zostera Marina Sites Along the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia written by Kira A. Krumhansl and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eelgrass (Zostera marina) supports diverse and productive ecosystems in the coastal zone, and is at threat from a variety of human activities. Warming seawater temperatures, changing storm patterns, and altered dynamics of freshwater and nutrient run-off associated with climate change have already impacted eelgrass communities worldwide, and are expected to continue to do so into the future. In this report we characterize the physical environment at 10 eelgrass sites along the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia to provide a documentation of the range of environmental conditions under which eelgrass occurs in this region, and set the stage for the development of empirical relationships between physical conditions and eelgrass ecosystem status"--Abstract, page iv.

Book Ecological Monitoring and Research in the Coastal Environment of the Atlantic Maritime Ecozone

Download or read book Ecological Monitoring and Research in the Coastal Environment of the Atlantic Maritime Ecozone written by Canada. Environment Canada. Atlantic Region and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A workshop was held to explore the need for an ecological research and monitoring site in the Atlantic Maritime Ecozone, with particular reference to the land/sea/atmospheric interface (coastal zone), and to explore the suitability of the Huntsman Marine Science Centre, in conjunction with the Fisheries and Oceans Canada Biological Station, as the administrative center of such a site. This publication presents summaries of the working group discussions on estuarine and marine ecosystems, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and ecosystems data management, and includes papers presented at the workshop. The topics of the papers include ecosystem and wildlife monitoring, atmospheric variables and trees, research and monitoring programs, sulfur dioxide deposition, lakewater chemistry, benthic monitoring, and nutrient cycling patterns.

Book Ecological Regions of North America

Download or read book Ecological Regions of North America written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a first attempt at holistically classifying and mapping ecological regions across all three countries of the North American continent. A common analytical methodology is used to examine North American ecology at multiple scales, from large continental ecosystems to subdivisions of these that correlate more detailed physical and biological settings with human activities on two levels of successively smaller units. The volume begins with an overview of North America from an ecological perspective, concepts of ecological regionalization. This is followed by descriptions of the 15 broad ecological regions, including information on physical and biological setting and human activities. The final section presents case studies in applications of the ecological characterization methodology to environmental issues. The appendix includes a list of common and scientific names of selected species characteristic of the ecological regions.

Book excerpt: As climate change, resource overexploitation, and pollution leave ever more visible marks, ocean ecosystems, economies, and people are all affected. With coasts on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic, Canada faces a formidable challenge in building resilient, sustainable oceans and supporting the communities that rely on them. Sea Change reports on the OceanCanada Partnership, a multidisciplinary project to take stock of what we know about Canada’s oceans, construct possible scenarios for coastal regions, and create a national dialogue and vision. Three themes emerge from this impressive synthesis of social, cultural, economic, and environmental research: ocean change, access to ocean resources, and ocean governance. Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars and practitioners focus on finding solutions to rapid environmental and social transformation, outlining the implications for legislation and offering policy recommendations. Increasingly, civil society will have to advocate for oceans, and Sea Change will empower the voices of those who take up that task.
