Book Identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs in the Canadian Arctic

Download or read book Identification of Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs in the Canadian Arctic written by Jake C. Rice and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A national science advisory meeting was held June 14-17, 2011 at the Delta Hotel in Winnipeg. The primary objective of this peer-review meeting was to identify marine Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) in the Canadian Arctic using Fisheries and Oceans Canada EBSA Criteria. A primary working paper summarised the information from a large number of sources and provided the basis for the related science advice. In addition, meeting participants provided further supplementary information. Once the relevant Arctic EBSAs were identified, their national or global significance was determined. This Arctic EBSA exercise is part of Canada's ongoing commitment to building a national network of marine protected areas.

Book Refinement of Information Relating to Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs Identified in the Newfoundland and Labrador NL Bioregion

Download or read book Refinement of Information Relating to Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas EBSAs Identified in the Newfoundland and Labrador NL Bioregion written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oceans Program in the NL Region sought identification and/or clarification of the particular sub areas for each EBSA identified in the NL Bioregion. [...] For both of these processes, the EBSAs were described with the inclusion of a corresponding map, however the data layers that were used to aid in the identification processes were not specifically requested, and in the case of the LOMA EBSAs, the subcomponents were not geospatially identified or described in detail. [...] This may be a reference to the general pattern that cod spend their summers on the shelf and then move to the edges along the slope in the winter. [...] With no reference to a particular area along the shelf, a note was included in the atlas to indicate the importance of the shelf edge for cod migration. [...] Initially the marine mammal spatial layer covered a section of the tail of the banks and the northeast shelf slope, but was modified to include the shelf edge connecting the two areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Arctic Canada, Hudson Bay is a site of great exploration history, aboriginal culture, and a vast marine wilderness supporting large populations of marine mammals and birds. These include some of the most iconic Arctic animals like beluga, narwhal, bowhead whales, and polar bears. Due to the challenges of conducting field research in this region, some of the mysteries of where these animals move, and how they are able to survive in such seemingly inhospitable, ice-choked habitats are just now being unlocked. For example, are polar bears being replaced by killer whales? This new information could not be more salient, as the Hudson Bay Region is undergoing rapid environmental change due to global warming, as well as increased pressures from industrial development interests. A Little Less Arctic brings together some of the world’s leading Arctic scientists to present the current state of knowledge on the physical and biological characteristics of Hudson Bay.

Book Circulation in the Coastal Ocean

Download or read book Circulation in the Coastal Ocean written by G.T. Csanady and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1982-09-30 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some time there has existed an extensive theoretical literature relating to tides on continental shelves and also to the behavior of estuaries. Much less attention was traditionally paid to the dynamics of longer term, larger scale motions (those which are usually described as circulation') over continental shelves or in enclosed shallow seas such as the North American Great Lakes. This is no longer the case: spurred on by other disciplines, notably biological oceanography, and by public concern with the environment, the physical science of the coastal ocean has made giant strides during the last two decades or so. Today, it is probably fair to say that coastal ocean physics has come of age as a deduc tive quantitative science. A well developed body of theoretical models exist, based on the equations of fluid motion, which have been related to observed currents, sea level variations, water properties, etc. Quantitative parameters required in using the models to predict e.g. the effects of wind or of freshwater influx on coastal currents can be estimated within reasonable bounds of error. While much remains to be learned, and many exciting discoveries presumably await us in the future, the time seems appropriate to summarize those aspects of coastal ocean dynamics relevant to 'circulation' or long term motion.

Book Top Predators in Marine Ecosystems

Download or read book Top Predators in Marine Ecosystems written by C. J. Camphuysen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-05-11 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sustainable exploitation of the marine environment depends upon our capacity to develop systems of management with predictable outcomes. Unfortunately, marine ecosystems are highly dynamic and this property could conflict with the objective of sustainable exploitation. This book investigates the theory that the population and behavioural dynamics of predators at the upper end of marine food chains can be used to assist with management. Since these species integrate the dynamics of marine ecosystems across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales, they offer new sources of information that can be formally used in setting management objectives. This book examines the current advances in the understanding of the ecology of marine predators and will investigate how information from these species could be used in management.

Book Marine Biodiversity Conservation

Download or read book Marine Biodiversity Conservation written by Keith Hiscock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective marine biodiversity conservation is dependent upon a clear scientific rationale for practical interventions. This book is intended to provide knowledge and tools for marine conservation practitioners and to identify issues and mechanisms for upper-level undergraduate and Masters students. It also provides sound guidance for marine biology field course work and professionals. The main focus is on benthic species living on or in the seabed and immediately above, rather than on commercial fisheries or highly mobile vertebrates. Such species, including algae and invertebrates, are fundamental to a stable and sustainable marine ecosystem. The book is a practical guide based on a clear exposition of the principles of marine ecology and species biology to demonstrate how marine conservation issues and mechanisms have been tackled worldwide and especially the criteria, structures and decision trees that practitioners and managers will find useful. Well illustrated with conceptual diagrams and flow charts, the book includes case study examples from both temperate and tropical marine environments.

Book The State of the World s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture

Download or read book The State of the World s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State of the World's Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture presents the first global assessment of biodiversity for food and agriculture worldwide. Biodiversity for food and agriculture is the diversity of plants, animals and micro-organisms at genetic, species and ecosystem levels, present in and around crop, livestock, forest and aquatic production systems. It is essential to the structure, functions and processes of these systems, to livelihoods and food security, and to the supply of a wide range of ecosystem services. It has been managed or influenced by farmers, livestock keepers, forest dwellers, fish farmers and fisherfolk for hundreds of generations. Prepared through a participatory, country-driven process, the report draws on information from 91 country reports to provide a description of the roles and importance of biodiversity for food and agriculture, the drivers of change affecting it and its current status and trends. It describes the state of efforts to promote the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity for food and agriculture, including through the development of supporting policies, legal frameworks, institutions and capacities. It concludes with a discussion of needs and challenges in the future management of biodiversity for food and agriculture. The report complements other global assessments prepared under the auspices of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, which have focused on the state of genetic resources within particular sectors of food and agriculture.
