Book An Ecosystem Framework for the Management of Musquash Estuary Marine Protected Area

Download or read book An Ecosystem Framework for the Management of Musquash Estuary Marine Protected Area written by Rabindra Singh and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an ecosystem framework for the management of Musquash Estuary Marine Protected Area (MPA). The Musquash Planning Group (later called the Musquash Advisory Committee) identified specific goals and objectives for the MPA. These objectives were used in further defining specific ecosystem objectives for the MPA based on the national ecosystem objectives developed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). The Musquash ecosystem objectives, like the national ecosystem objectives, cover three broad categories - biodiversity, productivity and habitat. In defining these objectives (and their sub-objectives) the approach was to look at the present and allowed human activities within the MPA and to develop operational strategies that would target the possible impacts of those activities. The framework further points to the possible performance indicators that can be used to monitor how well those objectives are being met. This report provides a summary of the relevant federal and provincial regulations that would be relevant to the human activities within the MPA. The present human activities are described and their relevance to the ecosystem framework, to monitoring, and to the management of the MPA are described.--Author's description.

Book Preliminary Analysis of Coastal Marine Resource Use and the Development of Open Ocean Aquaculture in the Bay of Fundy

Download or read book Preliminary Analysis of Coastal Marine Resource Use and the Development of Open Ocean Aquaculture in the Bay of Fundy written by B. D. Chang and published by St. Andrew's, N.B. : Fisheries and Oceans Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Brunswick finfish aquaculture industry is concentrated in the southwestern portion of the province, in the lower Bay of Fundy. Within this area there are few nearshore locations remaining for new aquaculture operations. Open ocean (offshore or exposed) aquaculture may be the only option to allow expansion of the finfish aquaculture industry. In order to assist both the aquaculture industry and coastal zone managers, we conducted a preliminary analysis of coastal zone management issues related to the feasibility of open ocean farms in the Bay of Fundy. We gathered existing geo-referenced information on oceanographic conditions, salmon aquaculture, commercial fisheries, species at risk, ecologically sensitive areas, shipping, and other activities. The information was gathered from scientific publications, other publications, websites, and interviews with government employees. For some important activities, such as the lobster fishery, and some species at risk, such as the endangered inner Bay of Fundy wild salmon, there is very little geo-referenced data available on the locations of essential areas. The preliminary analysis indicates that, while some degree of conflict may occur over much of the Bay of Fundy, there may be some areas where open ocean aquaculture could take place, with relatively little conflict. However, more detailed investigations and consultations are recommended in order to confirm existing data, to gather data where it is lacking, and to examine the potential for aquaculture to coexist with any existing uses or activities

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this book provides ready access to legislation and practice concerning the environment in Canada. A general introduction covers geographic considerations, political, social and cultural aspects of environmental study, the sources and principles of environmental law, environmental legislation, and the role of public authorities. The main body of the book deals first with laws aimed directly at protecting the environment from pollution in specific areas such as air, water, waste, soil, noise, and radiation. Then, a section on nature and conservation management covers protection of natural and cultural resources such as monuments, landscapes, parks and reserves, wildlife, agriculture, forests, fish, subsoil, and minerals. Further treatment includes the application of zoning and land-use planning, rules on liability, and administrative and judicial remedies to environmental issues. There is also an analysis of the impact of international and regional legislation and treaties on environmental regulation. Its succinct yet scholarly nature, as well as the practical quality of the information it provides, make this book a valuable resource for environmental lawyers handling cases affecting Canada. Academics and researchers, as well as business investors and the various international organizations in the field, will welcome this very useful guide, and will appreciate its value in the study of comparative environmental law and policy.

Book Canadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs 2007

Download or read book Canadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs 2007 written by David Mutimer and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs is an acclaimed series that offers informed commentary on important national events and considers their significance in local and international contexts. This latest instalment covers a year of dramatic activity in provincial politics. In 2007 the economy continued on its remarkable run of growth, allowing the new Conservative government to continue its predecessor's tradition of presenting a balanced budget while further reducing Canadians' taxes and increasing government spending. With the opposition Liberals not looking to engineer a quick election, federal politics was both cautious and static. In the provinces, however, the Liberals won electoral victories in Quebec and Ontario, while the NDP won a third consecutive election in Manitoba. The Canadian dollar rose past parity with the American for the first time in almost 31 years, and the country celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Book Marshes of the Ocean Shore

Download or read book Marshes of the Ocean Shore written by Joseph Vincent Siry and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An early observer remarked that it was doubtful that organic life was anywhere more exquisitely adjusted to its environment "than in the marshes of the ocean shore." Yet through most of American history, coastal wetlands have been viewed as noxious regions, some good for recreation but most fit only for dredging and reclamation. Recently, however, ecologists have recognized the diversity and biotic fecundity of the nation's tidelands.

Book excerpt: As climate change, resource overexploitation, and pollution leave ever more visible marks, ocean ecosystems, economies, and people are all affected. With coasts on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic, Canada faces a formidable challenge in building resilient, sustainable oceans and supporting the communities that rely on them. Sea Change reports on the OceanCanada Partnership, a multidisciplinary project to take stock of what we know about Canada’s oceans, construct possible scenarios for coastal regions, and create a national dialogue and vision. Three themes emerge from this impressive synthesis of social, cultural, economic, and environmental research: ocean change, access to ocean resources, and ocean governance. Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars and practitioners focus on finding solutions to rapid environmental and social transformation, outlining the implications for legislation and offering policy recommendations. Increasingly, civil society will have to advocate for oceans, and Sea Change will empower the voices of those who take up that task.
