Book An Introduction to the Aquatic Insects of North America

Download or read book An Introduction to the Aquatic Insects of North America written by Richard W. Merritt and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This treatment is intended to provide a standard guide to North American families of aquatic insects; their taxonomy, phylogeny, morphology, ecology, and distribution, as well as collection and rearing techniques. The coverage should allow a variety of groups, both lay and professional, to identify and categorize the immatures of adults they collect and, having done so, to associate pertinent ecological and distributional information with the group in question.

Book Aquatic Insects

Download or read book Aquatic Insects written by D. Dudley Williams and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic insects are being used increasingly to test a number of hypotheses in contemporary ecological theory. Additionally, research has revealed the importance of aquatic insects in the spread of diseases, the biological assessment of water quality and the reconstruction of past environments on earth. This book presents new findings in the study of aquatic entomology, together with the background information necessary to understand them and references to more detailed studies. Only a limited prior knowledge of general ecology or entomology is assumed on the part of the reader. The book will therefore appeal to advanced undergraduate students taking courses in aquatic biology or entomology, as well as research workers in ecology and pure and applied entomology.

Book Ecological Strategies of Aquatic Insects

Download or read book Ecological Strategies of Aquatic Insects written by Charles W. Heckman and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book recounts the habits of many interesting and unusual exceptions to the rule that insects are typically terrestrial forms of life. It examines the different ways that groups of species have developed modes of existence in or on the surface of water, and gives reasons why the gross morphology of insects is not favorable for life in or near bodies of water, such as wings that fail to function after coming into contact with water, rendering them useless.

Book Aquatic Insects in the Vicinity of the Black Hills South Dakota and Wyoming

Download or read book Aquatic Insects in the Vicinity of the Black Hills South Dakota and Wyoming written by Grant De Jong and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Black Hills, straddling the border between southwestern South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming, represent an ecological "island" of mountainous terrain in the midst of the Great Plains. Streams, rivers, lakes, and ponds are abundant, yet the aquatic insect fauna inhabiting those ecosystems has not previously been compiled in a single document. This work demonstrates that the known fauna of 95 families, 335 genera, and 447 species-level aquatic insect taxa has a curious mix of eastern, western, northern, and southern biogeographic affinities, yet many significant data gaps remain, and this work can only represent a starting point. The Black Hills beckon more curious naturalists to come and add to our knowledge.

Book Ecology and Ethology of Aquatic Biota

Download or read book Ecology and Ethology of Aquatic Biota written by Arvind Kumar and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man has been playing a key role in shaping the environment with most of his activities directed towards its overall degradation. The aquatic ecosystems, which remained balanced and unaffected till the early days of civilization, get rapidly deteriorated due to population explosion, unmindful disposal of sewage and mushroom growth of industries. Billions of gallons of waste water from cities, housing settlements, industries and agricultural fields are thrown into watercourses everyday. Consequently, the ecology of water and ethology of biota existing therein have been greatly threatened. So, in order to focus the importance of ecology and ethology of aquatic biota, the present book has been brought out. The present book is a unique compilation of 90 articles contributed by eminent authors with different backgrounds, which will act as a key-board in opening new vista in the field of aquatic environment. With its application oriented and interdisciplinary approach, the book would be immensely useful to everyone dealing with aquatic environment, such as University teachers, environmental scientists, academicians, technocrats, politicians, researchers and post graduate students. Book Disguising ecological traps

Download or read book Disguising ecological traps written by Theodore Vincent Black and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Numerous free-flying adult aquatic insect species use polarized light signatures to locate waterbodies on which they reproduce and where larval stages live for the majority of their lives. Manmade objects and structures are capable of mimicking these polarized light signatures and in many cases create signatures which are more attractive to aquatic insects than water itself. This effect causes severe ecological traps which threaten aquatic insects with population declines or extinctions. Previous studies have shown that the attraction of highly polarizing synthetic sources can be mitigated by strategic grids of non-polarizing lines. This represents an appealing mechanistic conservation work around. This paper, through multiple choice preference experiments, measured the effect that line thickness had on the deterring quality of a grid scheme. Our results showed that across non-biting midges (Chironomidae), black flies (Simulliidea), caddisflies (Trichoptera), and mayflies (Ephemeroptera) thickness of the non-polarizing line was an essential factor in the deterring effect. Our thinnest lined trap scheme (lines1̃mm) captured equivalent numbers of insects to that of our highly polarizing control. My results also show novel interactions of different taxa and body size with the polarizing signatures of our experimental traps. My research has novel implications for both academic understanding of aquatic insect habitat selection and applied conservation strategies.

Book An Ecological Study of Some Aquatic Insects

Download or read book An Ecological Study of Some Aquatic Insects written by John P. Schaffer and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eight orders of aquatic insects were collected and classified to type of habitat. The results show that fast, rocky, well aerated waters contained the largest variety of insect genera belonging mainly to the orders Plecoptera, Trichoptera, and Ephemeroptera. River and pond habitats with slow muddy or trashy bottoms also contain a wide variety of aquatic insects. The order in this type of habitat are chiefly the Diptera and Odenata. River and pond habitats with bare sandy bottoms were found to be devoid of insect life."--Abstract.
