Book excerpt: Self-regulation can be defined as a public scheme in which private parties volunteer to meet standards established by public authorities; this is the case of the European Commission's eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS). The EMAS aims at promoting improvement in industry's environmental performance by the implementation of company-level environmental management systems, and the systematic evaluation of performance by accredited auditors. Self-regulatory initiatives have in common a conceptual framework, which draws a distinction between the two dimensions of these legal instruments: 1) the organizational impact on sustainability, and 2) stakeholder-oriented reporting. The concepts that form the core of self-regulation have been extracted from literature and integrated into an original model presented in this paper. The EMAS programme from the perspective of this conceptual model was analyzed, by projecting a parallel between the characteristics of self-regulation and the actual provisions of EMAS.

When we think of corporate environmental strategy, we usually have in mind a dull and stereotypical statement issued by the CEO, addressing aspects such as pollution reduction, stakeholder dialogue, and unfailing care for the environment. However, genuine environmental protection relies on proactive policies, managerial commitment, cleaner technologies, and advanced management procedures. The author identifies a series of environmental strategy dimensions, some of which have been thoroughly researched in the literature, whereas others have only emerged in recent years. The main dimensions presented in this book include corporate environmental performance; environmental accounting and disclosure; environmental management practices; greening the supply-chain; environmental values and responsibility; green entrepreneurship and innovation; environmental training, culture and policies; and environmental legitimacy and reputation. For each dimension, the author develops a discussion framework, which provides the necessary operational definitions, methodological implications, and practical situations in which these constructs can be used. Each section contains a visual representation of the relationships between the dimensions of corporate environmental strategy and the actions of decision-makers and relevant stakeholders.

In 1995 the Indonesian Ministry of Environment took the bold step to launch an environmental disclosure initiative called the Program for Pollution Control, Evaluation and Rating (PROPER). Under PROPER, environmental performance of companies is mapped into a five-color grading scale – Gold for excellent, Green for very good, Blue for good, Red for non-compliance, and Black for causing environmental damage. These ratings are then publicly disclosed through a formal press conference and posted on the internet. Not only did this simple rating scheme create a major media buzz and enhanced environmental awareness of the general public, but it also unleashed a wide range of performance incentives that showed how markets with environmental information could function in a developing country setting. The authors provide a multidisciplinary analysis of how the PROPER program harnessed the power of public disclosure to abate the problem of industrial pollution. They describe how the program has successfully improved the average environmental compliance rate from close to thrity per cent in 1995 to as high as seventy per cent in 2011. This improvement was driven primarily by information disclosure, which avoided expensive and unpredictable legal enforcement through the court system of Indonesia. The combination of institutional history and detailed economic and analyses sheds light on the role of policy entrepreneurs who laid the foundation for disclosure and transparency, despite the constraints of the Suharto regime. The PROPER program is now internationally recognized and continues to serve as a model for many developing countries.

The author argues that CSR is part of a wheel of neoliberalism that continually perpetuates inequality and the exploitation of women and Nature. Using an ecofeminist sense-making analysis of media coverage of food waste, global warming, plastic, economic growth and CSR, the author shows how the press discourse in writing is always similar and serves to preserve the status quo with CSR being just a smokescreen that saved capitalism and just one cog in the wheel of neoliberalism. While available research offers perspectives from business and public relations studies, looking at how CSR is implemented and how it contributes towards the reputation of businesses, this book explores how the media enforce CSR discourse while at the same time arguing for environmental preservation. The book presents a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to explain how and why CSR is being pushed forward by the news media, and how the media preserves the status quo by creating moral panic on environmental issues while at the same time pushing for CSR discourse and economic growth, which only contributes towards environmental degradation. The original research presented in the book looks at how the media write about economic growth, plastics, food waste, CSR and global warming. This interdisciplinary study draws on ecofeminist theory and media feminist theory to provide a novel analysis of CSR, making the case that enforcing CSR as a way to do business damages the environment and that the media enforce a neoliberal discourse of promoting both economic growth and environmentalism, which does not go together. Examining the UK media as a case study, a detailed methodological account is provided so that the study can be repeated and compared elsewhere. The book is aimed at academics and researchers in business and media studies, as well as those in women’s studies. It will also be relevant to scholars in business management and marketing.
