Book Emotional Choices

Download or read book Emotional Choices written by Robin Markwica and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do states often refuse to yield to military threats from a more powerful actor, such as the United States? Why do they frequently prefer war to compliance? International Relations scholars generally employ the rational choice logic of consequences or the constructivist logic of appropriateness to explain this puzzling behavior. Max Weber, however, suggested a third logic of choice in his magnum opus Economy and Society: human decision making can also be motivated by emotions. Drawing on Weber and more recent scholarship in sociology and psychology, Robin Markwica introduces the logic of affect, or emotional choice theory, into the field of International Relations. The logic of affect posits that actors' behavior is shaped by the dynamic interplay among their norms, identities, and five key emotions: fear, anger, hope, pride, and humiliation. Markwica puts forward a series of propositions that specify the affective conditions under which leaders are likely to accept or reject a coercer's demands. To infer emotions and to examine their influence on decision making, he develops a methodological strategy combining sentiment analysis and an interpretive form of process tracing. He then applies the logic of affect to Nikita Khrushchev's behavior during the Cuban missile crisis in 1962 and Saddam Hussein's decision making in the Gulf conflict in 1990-1 offering a novel explanation for why U.S. coercive diplomacy succeeded in one case but not in the other.

Already incarcerated by the age of fifteen, however, Shastri turns down political opportunities in order to suffer with his people as a freedom fighterand suffer he did. It is several years before India is declared a free state, in 1947. By then, Vedanta is born. Vedanta forms a friendship with the wise and learned Shastri, and soon Vedanta becomes Shastris adopted son, accepting instruction from this respected elder. Together, they must navigate a newly free India, where the rules have changed and politics are as complicated as ever. Over a forty-year span, the life of Shastri pours into that of Vedanta. Through love of God and of women, both men seek peace and enlightenment. Although theirs is a story of India, the struggles of elder Shastri and young Vedanta are universal. Book Modern Eclectic Therapy A Functional Orientation to Counseling and Psychotherapy

Download or read book Modern Eclectic Therapy A Functional Orientation to Counseling and Psychotherapy written by Joseph Hart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a hybrid; it contains theoretical sections and sections de voted to technique; it attempts to provide a historical perspective and to give a contemporary formulation of theory and practice; and it dis cusses both practical problems of day-by-day therapy sessions and phil osophical issues related to the meaning of psychotherapy in modern society. In a way the book reflects, in its own style and contents, the subject it is about. Eclectic therapy is certainly a hybrid of many strains of influence; it is more diverse in its structures, theories, and techniques than any other therapeutic orientation. Still, eclectic therapy does have a definite consistency and coherency that I hope will be clearly revealed in this book. The plan of the book is as follows. In Part I, I will present the arguments and evidence that there is a modern trend toward eclecticism among therapists and then in Part II, tie this trend into the historical tradition of functionalism. Both the common features of clinical func tionalism and the specific ideas and methods of James, Janet, Burrow, Taft, and Thorne are presented. I believe it will be a revelation to many readers to see the contemporary significance of the therapies practiced by these eclectic pioneers.
