Download or read book Visions and Voice Hearing in Medieval and Early Modern Contexts written by Hilary Powell and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-11 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how the experiences of hearing voices and seeing visions were understood within the cultural, literary, and intellectual contexts of the medieval and early modern periods. In the Middle Ages, these experiences were interpreted according to frameworks that could credit visionaries or voice-hearers with spiritual knowledge, and allow them to inhabit social roles that were as much desired as feared. Voice-hearing and visionary experience offered powerful creative possibilities in imaginative literature and were often central to the writing of inner, spiritual lives. Ideas about such experience were taken up and reshaped in response to the cultural shifts of the early modern period. These essays, which consider the period 1100 to 1700, offer diverse new insights into a complex, controversial, and contested category of human experience, exploring literary and spiritual works as illuminated by scientific and medical writings, natural philosophy and theology, and the visual arts. In extending and challenging contemporary bio-medical perspectives through the insights and methodologies of the arts and humanities, the volume offers a timely intervention within the wider project of the medical humanities. Chapters 2 and 5 are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Download or read book Christopher Marlowe in Context written by Emily C. Bartels and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-11 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A contemporary of William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson, Christopher Marlowe was one of the most influential early modern dramatists, whose life and mysterious death have long been the subject of critical and popular speculation. This collection sets Marlowe's plays and poems in their historical context, exploring his world and his wider cultural influence. Chapters by leading international scholars discuss both his major and lesser-known works. Divided into three sections, 'Marlowe's works', 'Marlowe's world', and 'Marlowe's reception', the book ranges from Marlowe's relationship with his own audience through to adaptations of his plays for modern cinema. Other contexts for Marlowe include history and politics, religion and science. Discussions of Marlowe's critics and Marlowe's appeal today, in performance, literature and biography, show how and why his works continue to resonate; and a comprehensive further reading list provides helpful suggestions for those who want to find out more.
Download or read book Northwest Passage written by Wayne Luckmann and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-01-23 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northwest Passage presents a collection of poems that traces the poet Wayne Luckmanns own development and the development of his poetry in both style and substance. The poems in this collection present the significance and meaning of various events during several decades, many of those events taking place within the rich setting of the Pacific Northwest. From the disturbing imagery of Nuremburg Revisited to the hope of a new year in Reconnaissance, Luckmann offers his responses to his environment, the lives of people who have had a significant influence on the history of ideas, and events in his own development. Wayne Luckmann writes with a gathering force. Image is added carefully to image to combine an emotional with an intellectual effect. His desire to combine intellectual reactions with emotional responses dictates situation, language, and length in his poetry. A situation suggests an idea in turn suggesting language and a poem begins to emerge.
