Book excerpt: Elegant, brutal, and profound—this magnificent debut captures the grit and glory of modern Hawai'i with breathtaking force and accuracy. In a stunning collection that announces the arrival of an incredible talent, Kristiana Kahakauwila travels the islands of Hawai'i, making the fabled place her own. Exploring the deep tensions between local and tourist, tradition and expectation, façade and authentic self, This Is Paradise provides an unforgettable portrait of life as it’s truly being lived on Maui, Oahu, Kaua'i and the Big Island. In the gut-punch of “Wanle,” a beautiful and tough young woman wants nothing more than to follow in her father’s footsteps as a legendary cockfighter. With striking versatility, the title story employs a chorus of voices—the women of Waikiki—to tell the tale of a young tourist drawn to the darker side of the city’s nightlife. “The Old Paniolo Way” limns the difficult nature of legacy and inheritance when a patriarch tries to settle the affairs of his farm before his death. Exquisitely written and bursting with sharply observed detail, Kahakauwila’s stories remind us of the powerful desire to belong, to put down roots, and to have a place to call home.

Book excerpt: “An enthralling tale of disappearances, deaths, dark secrets, and corporate evil.” —Douglas Preston, #1 bestselling co-author of the Agent Pendergast series Nothing stays hidden forever... Two men, unified by a string of disappearances and deaths, search for answers—and salvation—in the jungles of Kaua‘i. Together, they must navigate the overlapping and complicated lines between a close-knit community and the hated, but economically-necessary corporate farms—and the decades old secrets that bind them. Project Namahana takes you from Midwestern, glass-walled, corporate offices over the Pacific and across the island of Kaua‘i; from seemingly idyllic beaches and mountainous inland jungles to the face of Mount Namahana; all the while, exploring the question of how corporate executives could be responsible for evil things without, presumably, being evil themselves. Join the Random House Reader’s Circle for author chats and more. In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. Appearing in paperback for the first time—with twenty arresting new photos and an extensive Q&A with the author—Unbroken is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The Uninhabitable Earth hits you like a comet, with an overflow of insanely lyrical prose about our pending Armageddon.”—Andrew Solomon, author of The Noonday Demon NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New Yorker • The New York Times Book Review • Time • NPR • The Economist • The Paris Review • Toronto Star • GQ • The Times Literary Supplement • The New York Public Library • Kirkus Reviews It is worse, much worse, than you think. If your anxiety about global warming is dominated by fears of sea-level rise, you are barely scratching the surface of what terrors are possible—food shortages, refugee emergencies, climate wars and economic devastation. An “epoch-defining book” (The Guardian) and “this generation’s Silent Spring” (The Washington Post), The Uninhabitable Earth is both a travelogue of the near future and a meditation on how that future will look to those living through it—the ways that warming promises to transform global politics, the meaning of technology and nature in the modern world, the sustainability of capitalism and the trajectory of human progress. The Uninhabitable Earth is also an impassioned call to action. For just as the world was brought to the brink of catastrophe within the span of a lifetime, the responsibility to avoid it now belongs to a single generation—today’s. LONGLISTED FOR THE PEN/E.O. WILSON LITERARY SCIENCE WRITING AWARD “The Uninhabitable Earth is the most terrifying book I have ever read. Its subject is climate change, and its method is scientific, but its mode is Old Testament. The book is a meticulously documented, white-knuckled tour through the cascading catastrophes that will soon engulf our warming planet.”—Farhad Manjoo, The New York Times “Riveting. . . . Some readers will find Mr. Wallace-Wells’s outline of possible futures alarmist. He is indeed alarmed. You should be, too.”—The Economist “Potent and evocative. . . . Wallace-Wells has resolved to offer something other than the standard narrative of climate change. . . . He avoids the ‘eerily banal language of climatology’ in favor of lush, rolling prose.”—Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times “The book has potential to be this generation’s Silent Spring.”—The Washington Post “The Uninhabitable Earth, which has become a best seller, taps into the underlying emotion of the day: fear. . . . I encourage people to read this book.”—Alan Weisman, The New York Review of Books

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling and true tale is set in the 1790's Hawaiian Islands. Kamehameha the Ghttp: //www.google.com/webhp?rls=igreat, having conquered the Island of Hawaii, is marshalling his forces for an attack on the leeward islands of Maui, Oahu and Kauai. His main rivals, the Maui Brotherhood of Chiefs, fight among themselves on the island of Oahu fully aware of the threat from the east, but unable to quell their bitter internal rivalries. When the English trading captain William Brown sails his ship Jackal into the harbor of what is now Honolulu in 1794 he could not have foreseen the terrible consequences. War had broken out among the ruling chiefs, and royal brothers battled for control of the island. Brown understands his peril, but his ships need refitting, and his plans require King Kalanikupule to confirm Brown's previous agreements with Kahekili, the king's father. If Brown achieves his goals, Hawaii is sure to become a British colony, possibly bringing the Crown into opposition with Kamehameha. However Brown misjudges the impact of the war chief Kamohomoho, uncle to the king, and one of the few Hawaiian chiefs of the time who understands the Englishman's mind set. Having fought a month long battle with his brother, Kamohomoho first maneuvers Brown into providing aid in the war, and when the battle is finally won, into an implicit statement of loyalty to the Oahu King. In due course Brown is called upon to demonstrate his loyalty, and when he waivers his plans are doomed. Adding to the intrigue is the arrival in Honolulu harbor of the American vessel, Lady Washington. Her captain, John Kendrick, is no fan of the Englishman Brown and his intrigues and threatens their success. Also on board the Lady is a Hawaiian passenger, a young man known to both the crews of the Lady and the Jackal. Kavaialii, a descendant of Oahu royalty, has sailed to China with the Chief Kaiana, and on his return again found refuge in the service of Kaiana, now allied with Kamehameha on Hawaii. Kavaialii has come to Oahu on the order of Kamehameha to gather intelligence on Kalanikupule's forces and armament, and to seek out Brown's rumored agreements with Kahekili. As the Oahu war ends, the fear of Kamehameha's invasion reignites among the Maui chiefs, and intrigue, murder, and plots form and unfold. The chaos of fear and uncertainty causes Kamohomoho to wonder if his brother, the dead King Kahekili, has not indeed cursed Oahu by seeking vengeance for past transgressions through curses against his own family and the people of Oahu. The Vengeance Kahekili is the complicated but true tale of the fall of the last major resistance to Kamehameha's dynastic ambitions. It is also the revealing story of the first European to anchor in Honolulu Harbor. Well researched, highly annotated, and historically revealing, The Vengeance of Kahekili weaves a dramatic and exciting tale from the long forgotten facts of this critical moment in Hawaiian history.
