Michael Luis Bolaño is the scion of Mexican oil wealth gone to rut in Texas. Sherman Spartacus Katz is the hyperliterate son of evangelical eccentrics from the North Georgia mountains. One hopes to restore what's been lost, the other to attain what never was. Together at an elite Institute of Technology they train as engineers. Together in the dark they study forbidden teachings. By graduation, they're formidably competent, audacious to a fault, and wholly ungovernable. Need LSD precursors? Biosynthesize them in yeast. Need souped-up wheelchairs? Disarm the governors. Need enriched uranium? CO₂ TEA lasers in the garage. Where there's a black market, they disrupt it. Where there's no black market, they create one. midnight's simulacra is a hysterical, scientifically rigorous, and fastpaced thriller, a modern picaresque, a portrait of autists as young men, and unlike any other novel you've read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas and Olivia Atwater combine ghosts, goblins, and dreadful faeries in a “swashbuckling steampunk adventure that delivers” (Caitlin Rozakis). Pick up Echoes of the Imperium and dive into a daring, madcap adventure that dashes from start to finish. A fallen empire. A goblin airship captain. One big, blasphemous problem. Captain William Blair has taken shady jobs before—what goblin hasn’t? But this shady job has pirates off the port bow and legendary aethermancers knocking at his cabin door. Unfortunately, Wil has sworn an Oath to escort his newest dubious passenger wherever she wants to go… and a goblin must be worth his word. The ragtag crew of the Iron Rose once survived the fall of an empire—but none of them are interested in revisiting the experience. As the dregs of the Imperium rise again to claw at their heels, Wil and his crew must face the literal ghosts of their past… or else history may well repeat itself. Praise for Echoes of the Imperium "Swashbuckling steampunk adventure with a healthy dose of self-awareness, Echoes of the Imperium keeps sight of the social and ecological impacts of a steam-driven empire while delivering what we're here for--airship aerial dogfighting, aether-driven explosions, goggles that do something, and tragically shattered tea sets. And found family. And goblins." —Caitlin Rozakis, NYT-bestselling author of Dreadful "Blair is such a wonderful, crunchy, gold-hearted captain-rogue, and his pack of misfits are all so faceted and intriguing. The blend of faerie and steampunk is equally full of familiar delights and surprising new twists. Whether you're here for madcap airship battles and swashbuckling steampunk knights, or the hard and beautiful truths about redemption and second chances, this is a rollicking adventure that satisfies on every level!" —Davinia Evans, author of Notorious Sorcerer "The Atwaters deliver a punchy, riotous ride through tumultuous skies, with a cast of gold-hearted rogues. Fans of Firefly and Leverage will want to join this motley crew!" —Charlotte E. English, author of Wyrde and Wayward and Modern Magick "Echoes of the Imperium resounds with wit, adventure, and heart, in a story that weaves irresistible roguish charm with powerful themes of regret and redemption. This is a world and a crew you'll never want to leave." —Jacquelyn Benson, author of Empire of Shadows

Book Midnight s Children

    Book Details:
  • Author : Salman Rushdie
  • Publisher : Vintage Canada
  • Release : 2010-12-31
  • ISBN : 0307367754
  • Pages : 560 pages

Download or read book Midnight s Children written by Salman Rushdie and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2010-12-31 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Booker prize and twice winner of the Booker of Bookers, Midnight's Children is "one of the most important books to come out of the English-speaking world in this generation" (New York Review of Books). Reissued for the 40th anniversary of the original publication--with a new introduction from the author--Salman Rushdie's widely acclaimed novel is a masterpiece in literature. Saleem Sinai is born at the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, the very moment of India’s independence. Greeted by fireworks displays, cheering crowds, and Prime Minister Nehru himself, Saleem grows up to learn the ominous consequences of this coincidence. His every act is mirrored and magnified in events that sway the course of national affairs; his health and well-being are inextricably bound to those of his nation; his life is inseparable, at times indistinguishable, from the history of his country. Perhaps most remarkable are the telepathic powers linking him with India’s 1,000 other “midnight’s children,” all born in that initial hour and endowed with magical gifts. This novel is at once a fascinating family saga and an astonishing evocation of a vast land and its people–a brilliant incarnation of the universal human comedy. Midnight’s Children stands apart as both an epochal work of fiction and a brilliant performance by one of the great literary voices of our time.

Book Distributions of Radar Echoes Over the United States

Download or read book Distributions of Radar Echoes Over the United States written by D. D. Grantham and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frequency and probability of radar echoes of convective clouds over the United States are presented. Analysis of three years of observations from a 31-station WSR-57 weather radar network indicates that at all altitudes, radar echo probabilities are greatest over Florida and the Gulf coast, generally decreasing northward over the United States. Also, largest probabilities for most layers and locations occur in summer. Echoes have been reported up to at least 70 kft in May, June, and July, and up to 60 kft in winter. Diurnal variations reveal greatest probabilities between 1600 and 2100 1st in all regions. Largest mean monthly 3-hour values are 85 percent, and the maximum mean daily range is roughly 65 percent in the southeast during the summer months. The probability of an echo-free horizontal view near the earth's surface for a 100-mile range is also presented. Tabulations of echo-free sectors, as percent of the 360-degree radar scope, show that the probability of obstructions to a horizontal view increases generally from northwest to southwest during all seasons. The probability of having no echoes is greater in winter than in summer except along the Pacific coastal region. Diurnal variability is larger in July than in January. (Author)

Book Stranger Gods

Download or read book Stranger Gods written by Roger Y. Clark and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000-12-18 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clark's exploration of Rushdie's novels works on at least three levels. First, he clarifies and interprets Rushdie's often puzzling references to figures such as Loki and Shiva, settings such as the mountains of Qaf and Kailasa, and experiences such as the annihilation of the self and the temptations of the Muslim Devil, Iblis. Second, he demonstrates how otherworldy motifs work with or against each other, fusing or clashing with Dantean, Shakespearean, and other literary forms to create hybrid characters, plots, and themes. Finally, he argues that Rushdie's brutal assault on tradition and taboo is mitigated by his secular idealism and his subtle homage to mystical ideals of the past. This novel interpretation, which presents Rushdie's first five novels as a heterogeneous yet consistent body of work, will challenge and delight not only Rushdie scholars but anyone interested in comparative religion and mythology, iconoclasm, and the interplay of Western and Eastern literary forms.
