Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Echoes of Battle Encouraged by the pleasant reception Of Alas kana, the author has selected from a considerable number of poems, these few which are Of a martial character, originally intended to be published sepa rately from time to time in the monthly magazines, the writing of which has extended over many years. He hopes that their perusal may prove interesting and some of them call to mind the un selfish patriotism Of those brave men who were ready and willing to sacrifice much, even life itself, for the cause of Liberty and Union. As I ride over the Revolutionary fields of struggle and contemplate the sufferings and hardships of those noble men, I think the heroes of that day should never be forgotten, and the roads over which they marched and the fields on which they fought, victorious or not, should be revered in memory. NO pen could ever produce pictures as vivid asthose which come back to me when I also recall the battle-fields of the Great Rebellion at Antietam and Gettysburg, when subsequent to the fighting several other surgeons and myself who had been furnished with the credentials of the Christian Commission, under which we volunteered, and others from the Sanitary Commission, hurried to the relief of the wounded and dying. I believe that the more fully we realize at what fearful cost the independence of the United States, and the preservation of the whole Union were attained, the more surely the American peo ple will always protect the country from a recur rence of distrust and rebellion. Andi sincerely hope that no battle-cry shall ever again resound within our Union, and that no misunderstanding Shall ever arise which a peaceful interchange of opinions may not rectify. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Echoes of the War Her abode really consists of one room, but she maintains that there are two; so, rather than argue, let us say that there are two. The other one has no window, and she could not swish her Old skirts in it Without knocking something over; its grandest display is Of tin pans and crockery on top of a dresser which has a lid to it; you have but to whip Off the utensils and raise the lid, and, behold, a bath with hot and cold. Mrs. Dowey is very proud of this possession, and when she shows it Off, as she does perhaps too frequently, she first signs to you with closed fist (funny Old thing that she is) to approach softly. She then tiptoes to the dresser and pops off the lid, as if to take the bath unawares. Then she sucks her lips, and is modest if you have the grace to do the exclamations. Book excerpt: The classic account of the final offensive against Hitler’s Third Reich. The Battle for Berlin was the culminating struggle of World War II in the European theater, the last offensive against Hitler’s Third Reich, which devastated one of Europe’s historic capitals and marked the final defeat of Nazi Germany. It was also one of the war’s bloodiest and most pivotal battles, whose outcome would shape international politics for decades to come. The Last Battle is Cornelius Ryan’s compelling account of this final battle, a story of brutal extremes, of stunning military triumph alongside the stark conditions that the civilians of Berlin experienced in the face of the Allied assault. As always, Ryan delves beneath the military and political forces that were dictating events to explore the more immediate imperatives of survival, where, as the author describes it, “to eat had become more important than to love, to burrow more dignified than to fight, to exist more militarily correct than to win.” The Last Battle is the story of ordinary people, both soldiers and civilians, caught up in the despair, frustration, and terror of defeat. It is history at its best, a masterful illumination of the effects of war on the lives of individuals, and one of the enduring works on World War II.

Book Camp Fire Sketches and Battle Field Echoes of the Rebellion Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camp-Fire Sketches and Battle-Field Echoes of the Rebellion Other war books have preceded this, but they have been for the most part purely historical and statistical, or the experiences and observations of a single individual, thus portraying but a glimpse of the most gigantic, thrilling, and bloody drama of the nineteenth century. The actual facts and experience concerning such a colossal and terrific strife can in no way be so accurately and truthfully ascertained as by and through the unbiased testimony of the actors themselves. Neither time, pains, nor expense has been spared in gathering the material for this volume, and it comes fresh from the heart and pen of more than three hundred veteran soldiers of the rank and file, both North and South. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Echoes From the Glen in Divers Keys I am sending this little volume out, more than partly at the solicitations of my friends. That does not appear a very modest and honorable salutation for my readers. Nevertheless it is true, and I trust those kind friends may help to bear the misfortunes and failures which may befall its pathway. The "Echoes in Divers Keys" have been written from boyhood up: through the time of battles into the quietude of plantation life, long intervals sometimes intervening, which may perhaps account in a measure for the repetition of style and vocabulary. Let me say that I sincerely hope that those who may chance upon the book may find a bit of restful melody and also a scrap of homely merriment in some of its pages. Book The Battle Cry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Battle Cry Classic Reprint written by Charles Neville Buck and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle Cry At then particular moment Juanita Holland could feel nothing but pride and love for the young man whose figure mingled with the other seven in a picture of spirited color. Against the verdant background of the polo field there were eight, but all save one seemed negligible. The afternoon sun was sloping in amber drifts across the space where the ponies kicked up the turf and the silks of the team colors snapped like pennants about the straining shoulders of the players. It caught and edged the new springtime greenery with a margin of soft yellow. It flashed brightly upon pongee helmets and blue silk caps and splashed against the reeking flanks of the ponies. Of the hats and gowns along the white flagstoned terrace of the Bryn Mawr clubhouse, it made a great bouquet of nodding flowers, a bouquet which it caressed. Juanita Holland sat near the front and as some of the other girls smiled knowingly at her parted lips and fixed eyes, their glances traveled to an engagement ring and the fashion in which the slender hand it adorned clenched itself in the tensity of her interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Great Battles The following articles were published soon after the events described in them, and are reprinted now to supply an occasional demand among the writer's friends. The account of the Battle of Buena Vista was prepared from the detailed reports of the different commanders, with the aid of Carleton's Book, and verbal descriptions from parties present in the fight. General Taylor expressed himself satisfied with its accuracy; and it obtained the very undeserved credit, at the time, of being the production of an eye witness. Many years after the account of the Battle of Buena Vista was written, the writer was struck, as he read Thiers' Consulate and Empire, with the extraordinary similarity that existed between the Battle of Buena Vista and the Battle of Marengo, even in the fact that while Marengo made Buonaparte' Emperor, Buena Vista made Taylor President.
