Book excerpt: On a gray September day, on an island off the coast of Sweden, six -year -old Jens Davidsson ventured out of his backyard, walked out into a fog, and vanished….Now twenty years have passed, and in this magnificent debut novel of suspense—a runaway bestseller in Sweden—the boy’s mother returns to the place where her son disappeared, drawn by a chilling package sent in the mail… In it, lovingly wrapped, is one of Jens’ sandals—sandals Julia Davidsson put on her son’s feet that very last morning. Now, with only a handful of clues, Julia and her father are questioning islanders who were present the day Jens vanished—and making a shocking connection to Öland’s most notorious murder case: the killing spree of a wealthy young man who fled the island and died years before Jens was even born. Suddenly the island that once seemed so achingly familiar turns strange and dangerous… Until Julia finds herself facing truths she never imagined—about what really happened on that September day twenty years ago, about who may have crossed paths with little Jens in the fog, and how a child could truly vanish without a trace…until now.

Book excerpt: Echoes from the Grave is a classical piece of figurative work in which the author juxtaposes the unseen force of the natural law of justice with mortal man's manipulation of events for their ambition. The story is a holistic pendulum that swings through all sectors of human life on one hand and the handling of their institutions on the other. Jodu's father, Agya Kra, dies mysteriously. Jodu believes he was murdered. In trying to solve the mystery, he clashes with certain personalities in the Community. To save his neck and prove his point, he sets himself and a group of sympathizers up in the jungle. From their hideout in the wilderness, outlawed by the Community, they devise their strategies to vindicate themselves, with what seems to be natural forces supporting them. This piece brings into memory the medieval English story of Robin Hood. Though a creative artwork, one can also deduce a robust political tone of conflict between the human powers that be and the cowered citizenry in which the authoritarian political head uses all that is in their ability to silence the abused citizen. The author, W. Joe Adusei shows his mastery use of suspense to swing the pendulum in holding the reader from making their judgment till the very end of the story.

Book excerpt: Groups of burial mounds may be among the most tangible and visible remains of Europe's prehistoric past. Yet, not much is known on how "barrow landscapes" came into being . This book deals with that topic, by presenting the results of archaeological research carried out on a group of just two barrows that crown a small hilltop near the Echoput ("echo-well") in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. In 2007, archaeologists of the Ancestral Mounds project of Leiden University carried out an excavation of parts of these mounds and their immediate environment. They discovered that these mounds are rare examples of monumental barrows from the later part of the Iron Age. They were probably built at the same time, and their similarities are so conspicuous that one might speak of "twin barrows". The research team was able to reconstruct the long-term history of this hilltop. We can follow how the hilltop that is now deep in the forests of the natural reserve of the Kroondomein Het Loo, once was an open place in the landscape. With pragmatism not unlike our own, we see how our prehistoric predecessors carefully managed and maintained the open area for a long time, before it was transformed into a funerary site. The excavation yielded many details on how people built the barrows by cutting and arranging heather sods, and how the mounds were used for burial rituals in the Iron Age.

Book Echoes of the Soul

Download or read book Echoes of the Soul written by Echo Bodine and published by New World Library. This book was released on 1999 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Palm Sunday, Echo Bodine prayed to be granted a better understanding of worlds beyond this one, and three days later she found herself on an amazing voyage. Leaving her body behind, she traveled through life, death, and then beyond in a breath-taking vision of what awaits us all after this life. Echoes of the Soul is heartwarming and enlightening. In simple prose, Echo Bodine gently leads readers through realms of existence we all have yet to experience. Her inspiring images leave us with a hopeful vision of life after death — or, as Echo calls it, graduation, when we go to our real home. This inspiring and positive vision of the afterlife leaves the reader filled with hope, and even awe. Endorsements "Echo is the clearest psychic I've ever read. Her vision of our souls and the journey they take is awesome and wonderful — and fills all who read it with an understanding that brings a deep sense of peace, a serenity at the core of our being. Echo's vision puts our lives into a vast perspective — the soul's perspective — infinitely broader than our usual perspective." — Marc Allen, author of A Visionary Life
