Book excerpt: The year is 2121 and the Earth has endured a catastrophic century of global pandemics, conflict, and climate change. All international borders are closed, and the United Kingdom is no more. There is only ‘New Britain’ — a privately-run country governed by Aloysius Kroll, the enigmatic CEO of the megacorp ‘Kaoteck’. Gideon Rayne and the surviving members of Cobra Team have discovered Kroll’s deception. The evil despot plans to use the Cobras and their powerful quantum armour to forge a new British Empire, and he’s prepared to sacrifice the entire population of New Britain in the process. The young Cobras know they must free themselves from Kroll’s grasp, but the all-seeing gaze of the company A.I. ‘ADA’ makes escape from the Kaoteck pyramid seem impossible. To make matters worse, the presence of a mysterious new class of armour-clad warrior raises questions that just might be best left unanswered. It seems the echoes of the past have caught up with Gideon — and there’s a price to be paid. Following directly on from the events of the bestselling ‘Maelstorm – Gideon Rayne Book 1’, Derecho is a gritty, action-packed adventure that twists and turns as it draws you into a breathless race against time in a world where tragedy is waiting around every corner and the stakes are impossibly high.

Download or read book Greek and Roman Small Size Sculpture written by Giovanni Colzani and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-10-23 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerations about size and scale have always played a central role within Greek and Roman visual culture, deeply affecting sculptural production. Both Greeks and Romans, in particular, had a clear notion of “colossality” and were able to fully exploit its implications with sculpture in many different areas of social, cultural and religious life. Instead, despite their ubiquitous presence, an equal and contrary categorization for small size statues does not seem to have existed in Greek and Roman culture, leading one to wonder what were the ancient ways of conceptualizing sculptural representations in a format markedly smaller than “life-size.” Even in the context of modern scholarship on Classical Art, few notions appear to be as elusive as that of “small sculpture”, often treated with a certain degree of diffidence well summarized in the formula Klein, aber Kunst? In fact, a large and heterogeneous variety of objects corresponds to this definition: all kinds of small sculpture, from statuettes to miniatures, in a variety of materials including stone, bronze, and terracotta, associated with a great array of functions and contexts, and with extremely different levels of manufacture and patronage. It would be a major misunderstanding to think of these small sculptures in general as nothing more than a cheap and simplified alternative to larger scale statues. Compared with those, their peculiar format allowed for a wider range of choices, in terms, for example, of use of either cheap or extremely valuable materials (not only marble and bronze, but also gold and silver, ivory, hard stones, among others), methods of production (combining seriality and variation), modes of fruition (such as involving a degree of intimacy with the beholder, rather than staging an illusion of “presence”). Furthermore, their pervasive presence in both private and public spaces at many levels of Greek and Roman society presents us with a privileged point of view on the visual literacy of a large and varied public. Although very different in many respects, small-sized sculptures entertained often a rather ambivalent relationship with their larger counterparts, drawing from them at the same time schemes, forms and iconographies. By offering a fresh, new analysis of archaeological evidence and literary sources, through a variety of disciplinary approaches, this volume helps to illuminate this rather complex dynamic and aims to contribute to a better understanding of the status of Greek and Roman small size sculpture within the general development of ancient art.

Download or read book The Figure of Echo written by John Hollander and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this essay on "what the imagination has made of the phenomenon of echo,” John Hollander examines aspects of the figure of echo in light of their significance for poetry. Looking at echo in its literal, acoustic sense, echo in myth, and echo as literary allusion, Hollander concludes with a study of the rhetorical status of the figure of echo and an examination of the ancient and newly interesting trope of metalepsis, or transumption, which it appears to embody. Centered on ways in which Milton's poetry echoes, and is echoed by, other texts, The Figure of Echo also explores Spenser and other Renaissance writers; romantic poets such as Keats, Shelley, and Wordsworth; and modern poets including Hardy, Eliot, Stevens, Frost, Williams, and Hart Crane. This book has implications for literary theory and holds great practical interest for students and teachers of American and English literature of all periods. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Download or read book The Archaeology of Ancient Israelite Knowledge written by Robert S. Kawashima and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Archaeology of Ancient Israelite Knowledge reconstructs in carefully researched detail the worldview of the ancient Israelites writers responsible for the Hebrew Bible. What was the role of God in their lives? How did they see the relationship between God, nature, and themselves? Contrary to prevailing scholarly understanding, Robert Kawashima argues that the ancient Israelites saw God in a radically different way than the peoples around them. God no longer interconnected everything—humans, nature—but became seen as sharply separated from nature. Elegantly written and powerfully argued, The Archaeology of Ancient Israelite Knowledge is essential reading for anyone wanting to grasp the Hebrew Bible and the ancient world that gave rise to it.
