Lupe Wong is going to be the first female pitcher in the Major Leagues. She's also championed causes her whole young life. Some worthy...like expanding the options for race on school tests beyond just a few bubbles. And some not so much...like complaining to the BBC about the length between Doctor Who seasons. Lupe needs an A in all her classes in order to meet her favorite pitcher, Fu Li Hernandez, who's Chinacan/Mexinese just like her. So when the horror that is square dancing rears its head in gym? Obviously she's not gonna let that slide. Not since Millicent Min, Girl Genius has a debut novel introduced a character so memorably, with such humor and emotional insight. Even square dancing fans will agree...
Download or read book Saints and Latin Decadence written by Terrel Hale and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What follows is not a story. It is descriptions of instinct and desire, of the secular and holy. It is, in a way, what I see the purpose of art being. This is a novel that doesn't behave. It does not participate in good manners. Samuel Beckett said that the task of the artist is to find a form to accommodate the mess. This novel trusts the reader to do the work of narrating connections and stretches the assumptions about what texts are. I disrupt old narratives not because I have no faith in narratives, but because I mean for the reader to see in my gaps and verbal impasses the opening for new narratives. I have aided the metamorphosis from narrative into non-narrative by experimenting with typography. This is a book that has to be turned over and side-ways, in order that it be read both as pictures and text. This is a novel existing in the space of poetry creating an effect that adorns the action where the effect is more than the action. It is prose written with the intensity of poetry, a prose poem or something in between with more extended meditation in the same tradition of Edgar Allen Poe's Eureka or Baudelaire's Prose Poems or Bernadette Mayer's extended studies where the sentences keep accruing. Here there is no epiphany at any moment or no epiphany at all and because of this, this work is intentionally disorienting and disconcerting. One of my intentions was to be as close to nature as possible. Working outdoors was my inspiration and the primary object of my study. My aim was to respond...to the scene before me, to avoid conventional ways of seeing, and to fill my work with a sense of open air rather than studied light.

Get ready for epiphanies aplenty.” —David Sanford, executive editor of four Bibles published by Zondervan and Tyndale House “In these pages, you are welcomed inside the home of a young son of Israel who is “growing in wisdom and stature.” Do step inside. Smell the morning bread baking. Feel the daily tension living in small-town Nazareth where the brutal Roman military is stationed. Reect on the love, and the fear, and the faith of a family living amid oppressive pain from multiple sources—politics, the economy, and religion. And see the young boy blossom into the grown man who is the Savior of the world and its Deliverer. “I want to know my Lord more intimately. Don Brake has helped me. Reecting on some of the pages here, I walked today where Jesus walked.” —Stu Weber, pastor, author, and retired US Army awarded three Bronze Stars as a Green Beret in Vietnam. He is a best-selling author of several Gold Medallion nalist books. “Brake writes as a scribe, communicating the scenes as they’re happening, yet making readers privy to under currents with powerful ramications. Yes, this is a novel, but it is also devotional, study, and inspiration to draw us nearer to the One they called, Yeshua.” —Mesu Andrews, Novelist of nine biblical character novels

Cupid didn’t just arrive with a delicate arrow, but a thunderbolt — one that shattered my reality.” Designer Helena Antos never imagined her newfound strength, sass and self-belief would open doors far beyond her vivid imagination. Because when she met new boss Carter Walker, her heart did strange things, and so did the wind. The more time she spent around him became impossible to ignore that her sparked emotions effected the weather. Hailstorms were not her only concern. A girl with a trail of dead bodies warned Helena to go into hiding. Repeating numbers, strange dreams manifesting... Helena’s entire concept of normal was confronted, forcing her to question her reality, herself and especially her boss. Helena learns about her own mysterious origins and her attraction to Carter runs far deeper than she’d imagined. They shared an ancient soul connection which awakened a sacred gift within, an elemental power that placed a deadly target on her back. Not only that, but there was also a war going on and her kind were being hunted for their essence, and she was one of the few left.
Download or read book The Anniversary Man written by R.J. Ellory and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2010-06-10 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a “master of the genre,” a psychological thriller about a detective who turns to a trauma survivor to track down a copycat serial killer. (New York Times bestselling authorClive Cussler) This murderer went after young courting couples in an attempt to “save their souls.” Nadia was killed by the first blow of the hammer. John survived, but was physically and psychologically scarred to an extent that few people could comprehend. He withdrew from society, hid in his apartment, and now only emerges to work as a crime researcher for a major newspaper. Damaged as he may be, no one in New Jersey knows more about serial killers than John Costello. So, when a new spate of murders starts--all seemingly random and unrelated--John is the only one who can discern the complex pattern that lies behind them. But could this dark knowledge threaten his own life? “So real is Ellory’s writing that the lines between journalism and crime fiction blur. Though Ellory’s standalone crime thrillers grab readers by the throat and don’t let go until the last page, Detective Irving has the makings of Connelly’s Harry Bosch on steroids, sure to be a repeat character—and made with cinematic success into a blockbuster movie.” —Bookreporter.com “Ellory’s gripping thriller should appeal to lovers of procedurals and may also draw readers of true crime, as it deals with many actual serial killings” —Library Journal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays from some of the best writers in America, about what it means to be a fully functional, and sometimes fully dysfunctional, 21st–century, born–in–the–USA Latina Tired of the trite cultural clichés by which the media has defined Latinas, the editors of this collection of personal essays by both established and emerging authors, have gathered them with the intention of representing their varied experiences, through hilarious anecdotes from each of their colorful lives. While there is no one Latina identity, the editors believe that by offering a glimpse into these writers’ dynamic lives, they will facilitate a better understanding of their unique challenges and their dreams, and most important, their oftentimes shared histories. The contributors to this collection mirror the compassionate pleas Latinas usually reserve for each other over conversations in dark bars and late night gatherings. “Do they have to think that just because I’m a Latina that I can speak Spanish, curl my hair, paint my toe nails, and dance a rumba--all at the same time?” This, along with other interesting questions, results in a spectacular line up that has Latinas musing on their battling the world, the men that have done them wrong, and of course the mothers who, more often than not, just never understood that their daughters were more Americanas than not.
