Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventh Outlander novel from #1 National Bestselling author Diana Gabaldon. Jamie Fraser, erstwhile Jacobite and reluctant rebel, knows three things about the American rebellion: the Americans will win, unlikely as that seems in 1778; being on the winning side is no guarantee of survival; and he’d rather die than face his illegitimate son—a young lieutenant in the British Army—across the barrel of a gun. Fraser’s time-travelling wife, Claire, also knows a couple of things: that the Americans will win, but that the ultimate price of victory is a mystery. What she does believe is that the price won’t include Jamie’s life or happiness—not if she has anything to say. Claire’s grown daughter Brianna, and her husband, Roger, watch the unfolding of Brianna’s parents’ history—a past that may be sneaking up behind their own family.

Book The Echoing Wood of Theodore Roethke

Download or read book The Echoing Wood of Theodore Roethke written by Jenijoy Labelle and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A poet's tradition provides him with a sense of community that may be regarded as a necessary condition for poetry. Jenijoy La Belle, who studied with Roethke, here describes the cultural tradition that he defined and created for himself. In so doing, she demonstrates how an understanding of Roethke's sources and the influences on his work is essential for its interpretation. The author considers the sources of Roethke's poetry and the influence on him of a wide circle of poets including T. S. Eliot, Yeats, Whitman, Wordsworth, Smart, Donne, Sir John Davies, and Dante. In addition, she traces the changes in Roethke's response to his literary past as he moves from his early lyrics to his final sequences. His imitation of selected poets began as a conscious effort but later became a basic component of his imaginative faculties, encompassing an historical attitude and a psychological state. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Absurdist masterpiece by the author of Rhinoceros “is explosively, liberatingly funny...a loony parody with a climax which is an orgy of non-sequiturs” (The Observer). Written in 1950, Eugene Ionesco’s first play, The Bald Soprano, was a seminal work of Absurdist theatre. Today, it is celebrated around the world as a modern classic for its imagination and sui generis theatricality. A hilarious parody of English manners and a striking statement on the alienation of modern life, it was inspired by the strange dialogues Ionesco encountered in foreign language phrase books. Ionesco went on to become an internationally renowned master of modern drama, famous for the comic proportions and bizarre effects that allow his work to be simultaneously hilarious, tragic, and profound. As Ionesco has said, “Theater is not literature. . . . It is simply what cannot be expressed by any other means.”

Book Our Last Echoes

Download or read book Our Last Echoes written by Kate Alice Marshall and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kara Thomas meets Twin Peaks in this supernatural thriller about one girl's hunt for the truth about her mother's disappearance. In 1973, the thirty-one residents of Bitter Rock disappeared. In 2003, so did my mother. Now, I've come to Bitter Rock to find out what happened to her--and to me. Because Bitter Rock has many ghosts. And I might be one of them. Sophia's earliest memory is of drowning. She remembers the darkness of the water and the briny taste as it filled her throat, the sensation of going under. She remembers hands pulling her back to safety, but that memory is impossible--she's never been to the ocean. But then Sophia gets a mysterious call about an island names Bitter Rock, and learns that she and her mother were there fifteen years ago--and her mother never returned. The hunt for answers lures her to Bitter Rock, but the more she uncovers, the clearer it is that her mother is just one in a chain of disappearances. People have been vanishing from Bitter Rock for decades, leaving only their ghostly echoes behind. Sophia is the only one who can break the cycle--or risk becoming nothing more than another echo haunting the island.

Book excerpt: “I felt summer in the air. The season spouted the heat with its thousands of colors. I drunk up its sweet, fresh smell, and I was thinking about my childhood. That day, I realized that I was no more a child. Maybe that was the last day of my youth as the following day I would turn eighteen, so I was going to arrive to a turning point. This number has a great meaning in everybody’s life, but in our world, it has a particular importance. I was living in the country of Pangea since I had been born. We have a rule: when children turn eighteen, they have to appear at the Council of the Old, where their future is decided. Usually they give the same trade to the youngsters as their parents fulfilled, so I had a great chance to become a teacher. The situation with my brother was totally different. We were twins, but he was so extraordinary—he was more serious, deeper than me. On that day when we became adults, our fate was intermixed, and I had to be a ruthless warrior, a Guardian of Power. This is how my story begins.”

Book excerpt: This essential authorized biography of Eugene Peterson offers unique insights into the experiences and spiritual convictions of the iconic American pastor and beloved translator of The Message. “In the time of a generation-wide breakdown in trust with leaders in every sphere of society, Eugene’s quiet life of deep integrity and gospel purpose is a bright light against a dark backdrop.”—John Mark Comer, author of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry “This hunger for something radical—something so true that it burned in his bones—was a constant in Eugene’s life. His longing for God ignited a ferocity in his soul.” Encounter the multifaceted life of one of the most influential and creative pastors of the past half century with unforgettable stories of Eugene’s lifelong devotion to his craft and love of language, the influences and experiences that shaped his unquenchable faith, the inspiration for his decision to translate The Message, and his success and struggles as a pastor, husband, and father. Author Winn Collier was given exclusive access to Eugene and his materials for the production of this landmark work. Drawing from his friendship and expansive view of Peterson’s life, Collier offers an intimate, beautiful, and earthy look into a remarkable life. For Eugene, the gifts of life were inexhaustible: the glint of fading light over the lake; a kiss from his wife, Jan; a good joke; a bowl of butter pecan ice cream. As you enter into his story, you’ll find yourself doing the same—noticing how the most ordinary things shimmer with a new and unexpected beauty.

Book In the Land of the Marquis

Download or read book In the Land of the Marquis written by Kenneth McKenney and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-10-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When author Kenneth McKenney, his wife, and their two young children moved to Comillas in northern Spain, they knew nothing about the town. The McKenneys soon discover that Comillas was converted from a fishing village to a treasury of neo-Gothic architecture by one man-the first Marquis of Comillas-who convinced the King of Spain to stay and call his parliament there. During the McKenneys' explorations many more intriguing tales of the town were revealed. Close by are the caves of Altamira, with some of the finest rock paintings in the world, discovered when a man lost his dog. There is the beach where the second transatlantic crossing landed-by mistake. And high in the hills is the village of Garabandal, where four girls had visions of the Virgin Mary, and where a miracle is still expected. Above all, the McKenneys learnt what it is like to be the only English family in a Spanish town-where one word can make an enemy, and another a friend. In the land of the Marquis is also a book about writing a book, as the author first wrote a guide to Comillas, then extended it to cover small adventures in other parts of the world.
