Book excerpt: “We waited in silence, each man occupied with his own secret thoughts and no doubt wrestling with his own secret fears. I think that half-hour was probably the worst I have ever spent. Slowly and inexorably the minutes passed, second by second, and the time approached which might be the end of everything for me. All my efforts to screw up my courage, all my fatalistic self-assurances that what is to be, will be, became more and more useless, and hope seemed to ooze away with every second...” Frederick Noakes, 1917. Guardsman Frederick Noakes fought on the Western Front for the last 18 months of the Great War. In 1934, he wanted to write up his ‘adventures’ while his memory was still ‘undimmed’, using the letters he wrote home during 1917–1919 as the basis for the memoir. His eloquent text, with his views on politics, morale and the trenches, moved friends to persuade Noakes to publish the work privately in 1952. Fen Noakes did not consider himself a hero, but the dignity with which he conducted himself under the most dreadful conditions suggest otherwise. His articulate and effective prose gives a voice to the average soldier in the trenches. Professor Peter Simkins provides an introduction to this new edition, which also includes a foreword by Carole Noakes, niece of the author.

Book A Distant Drummer

Download or read book A Distant Drummer written by Jamal Assadi and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Distant Drummer attends more to F. Scott Fitzgerald's aesthetic merits, ideas, style, techniques, context of his works and less to biographical details which, critics believe, are intricately interwoven within his works. In striving to respond to Fitzgerald's artistry away from the impulse of the author's personal experience, it is - in a very strange paradox - more attuned and, in consequence, closer to Fitzgerald, who wanted his fiction to be objectively judged and free of the stigma which besmirches his reputation.

Book The Rumble of a Distant Drum

Download or read book The Rumble of a Distant Drum written by Morris Arnold and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2007-07-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rumble of a Distant Drum opens in 1673 when Marquette and Jolliet sailed down the Mississippi River and found the Quapaw already in residence in the Arkansas Post, where the Arkansas River flowed into the Mississippi. Here, they established the first European settlement in this part of the country, thirty years before New Orleans and eighty years before St. Louis. Morris S. Arnold draws on his many years of archival research and writing on colonial Arkansas to produce this elegant account of the cultural intersections of the French and Spanish with the native American peoples. He demonstrates that the Quapaws and Frenchmen created a highly symbiotic society in which the two disparate peoples became connected in complex and subtle ways - through intermarriage, trade, religious practice, and political/military alliances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the 2018 National Jewish Book Award in Poetry presented by the Jewish Book Council from "At Your Side" Years I walked at your side like our prophet Isaiah barefoot naked and bare I will put on no cover until you see me until you recognize an other one person at least and so know yourself as well Mordechai Geldman came of age as a poet in the seventies, an auspicious and transformative time in the development of modern Hebrew literature, as poets and writers rejected the flowery, the hyperbolic, and the sentimental and opted instead for a more direct and intimate speech. While his early poems tended to rely on linguistic exploration, his vision soon turned inward, as he came to favor the simple, the true, the authentic. Geldman's poems are direct and accessible, touching on and revealing the divine and the sacred in the so-called mundane.
