Book Frontiers in Invertebrate Physiology A Collection of Reviews

Download or read book Frontiers in Invertebrate Physiology A Collection of Reviews written by Saber Saleuddin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new 3-volume set provides informative reviews on the physiology of sponges, cnidarians, round and flat worms, annelids, echinoderms, and crustaceans, advancing our knowledge of the physiology of these major invertebrate groups (Phyla). Invertebrates exhibit the largest number of species and occupy virtually every conceivable ecological niche. They are economically important in food chains, they recycle organic waste, and they are crucial pollinators of plants and sources of food. They are also medically relevant as parasites that cause major diseases of both humans and livestock. Echinoderms and annelids are covered in Volume 3. The volume looks at temporary adhesion and regeneration as two important areas in echinoderm biology. It includes an important review of juxtaligamental cells, which may regulate the mechanical properties of connective tissue. Annelid physiology is discussed (neurobiology of locomotion in leeches, regeneration, reproduction) as is neuro-endocrine-immune response. Volume 1 looks at non-bilaterians (sponges, cnidarians, placozoans), while Volume 2 focuses on crustacean physiology, covering diverse physiological topics ranging from moulting, respiration, water balance, biomineralization, bioreceptors, and temperature regulation to the land adaptation of terrestrial crustaceans.

Book excerpt: This book provides the latest comprehensive methods for isolation and other novel techniques for marine product development. Furthermore, this book offers knowledge on the biological, medical, and industrial applications of marine-derived medicinal food substances. There has been a tremendous increase in the products derived from marine organisms for commercial application in industries every year. Functional foods of medicinal value are particularly in demand as new technology allows the stabilization of natural ingredients and their availability in pure forms to solve various human diseases. Marine flora and fauna have essential elements and trace minerals that nurture various hormones produced in the endocrine system to regulate the respective metabolisms, thereby providing a safe and healthy life to humans. The overall presentation and clear demarcation of the contents by worldwide contributions is a novel entry point into the market of medicinal foods from the sea. The exploration of marine habitats for novel materials are discussed throughout the book. The exploration and exploitation of the biochemistry of sea flora and fauna are limited, and this book extends the research possibilities into numerous marine habitats. Various approaches for extracting and applying the flora and fauna are discussed. This book will be of value to researchers, marine biotechnologists, and medical practitioners, due to the vast information, as well as industrial and medical applications of marine substances all in one place.

Book An Annotated Checklist of the Marine Macroinvertebrates of Alaska

Download or read book An Annotated Checklist of the Marine Macroinvertebrates of Alaska written by David Thomas Drumm and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A current and comprehensive species list of marine invertebrates of Alaska is essential for effective management of living marine resources, sustainable fisheries, conservation of vulnerable ecosystems, and advancement of our knowledge of biodiversity and ecosystem function. Furthermore, the most current checklist available to resource managers and scientists is quite dated and limited in that it only includes the marine invertebrates of the southern coast of Alaska to California. Since that checklist was published, many new species have been described, many range extensions have been discovered, and considerable changes in higher-level systematics have been made. The checklist that we have compiled lists 3708 species and presents for each species the currently accepted scientific name and its significant synonyms, common names, type localities, geographic and depth distributions, a general statement of abundance in Alaska when known (e.g., rare, uncommon, common, abundant), and general remarks. It includes species recorded in the marine waters of Alaska from the intertidal zone, continental shelf, and upper continental slope to abyssal depths, from the Beaufort Sea at the Arctic border with Yukon, Canada; the eastern Chukchi Sea, the eastern Bering Sea, the Aleutian Islands to the western border with Russia; and the Gulf of Alaska to Dixon Entrance at the southern border with British Columbia. Sound and reliable taxonomic identifications are necessary to monitor and predict changes in the distribution and abundance of marine species. The current status and future direction of the study of Alaskan marine invertebrate biodiversity are briefly discussed.

Book Marine Biotechnology

Download or read book Marine Biotechnology written by European Society for Marine Biotechnology. Meeting and published by Editions Quae. This book was released on 2003 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
