Book Echoes from the Greek Bronze Age

Download or read book Echoes from the Greek Bronze Age written by Robert D. Morritt and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Echoes from the Greek Bronze Age is the result of much that the author has read over several years. It is a study of the thoughts and works of early thinkers, from Hecataeus the early cartographer, to Herodotus’ survey of the then “known world,” the thoughts of Anaxagoras, Xenophon’s descriptions, and the sayings of Xenophanes. Simones work on the art of memory, “The Loci” and its influence so many years later on Giordano Bruno declared as a heretic are also explored. This book will interest readers who enjoy history, archaic scientific observations and those who desire a good read, rather than that found within a turgid Classical monograph. The author hopes that the reader will enjoy this book as much as he enjoyed writing it.

Book Poetic Gesture

Download or read book Poetic Gesture written by Kristine S. Santilli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study addresses the problem of meaning as it is conveyed by poetic language, attempting to move beyond some of the obstacles and boundaries of contemporary critical approaches. By providing a phenomenological context, and through a theoretical contemplation of certain myths as embodiments of the tacit 'logic' of poetry, the book argues that poems convey meaning much the way that spontaneous unreadable gestures do. Moving between theory and practice, and drawing upon the poetry of Wallace Stevens whose work is embedded with a richness and complexity of gesture, the author shows how the poetic text sustains and embodies an inconvertible, ancient and innately human form of linguistic knowledge.

Book Logos Arete

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Lee Baumgartner Sr
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 1434362841
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book Logos Arete written by Daniel Lee Baumgartner Sr and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the intent of this text to allow a more in-depth study to be made by the student of Greek history by having the essential data more readily available in this spreadsheet format. The pursuit of one's objective can be much more easily and quickly carried out if the student's train of thought can be maintained until the time that his final conclusions can be reached. The intent is not to give a thoroughly complete encyclopedic source of information about Greek history as that type of data is readily available in any public library. Once the names of the character, his point of fame, his family relationships and his place of birth, etc. are known, it will be much easier to find source material from virtually hundreds, if not thousands, of texts that have a treasure-trove of information that is not always being used because of the complexity involved in finding it. What this writer is doing in this text is giving the reader an introduction to the important characters of Greek history in much the same way we find out about a person we might meet at a party, exchanging general personal information like, "What Do You Do For a Living?" or "Are You Married?" and so forth. In addition, he has taken the liberty to assess the relative importance of each notable ancient Greek so that the reader's effort might be spent in a more beneficial way. Latitude has been left for some healthy controversy. Since Heinrich Schliemann discovered the site of ancient Troy, the academic community has taken criticism for their doubting of the factual nature of ancient Greek history. That has gone too far. The last century and a quarter has proven that the modern archaeologist is up to the task, giving open and accurate analysis of the finds that they have made without regards to pressure to misrepresent data so preconceived theories can be allowed to stand. The modern historians have also exonerated themselves by accepting their error and by moving in the direction of open-minded

Book Para Narratives in the Odyssey

Download or read book Para Narratives in the Odyssey written by Maureen Alden and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers coming to the Odyssey for the first time are often dazzled and bewildered by the wealth of material it contains which is seemingly unrelated to the central story: the main plot of Odysseus' return to Ithaca is complicated by myriad secondary narratives related by the poet and his characters, including Odysseus' own fantastic tales of Lotus Eaters, Sirens, and cannibal giants. Although these 'para-narratives' are a source of pleasure and entertainment in their own right, each also has a special relevance to its immediate context, elucidating Odysseus' predicament and also subtly influencing and guiding the audience's reception of the main story. By exploring variations on the basic story-shape, drawing on familiar tales, anecdotes, and mythology, or inserting analogous situations, they create illuminating parallels to the main narrative and prompt specific responses in readers or listeners. This is the case even when details are suppressed or altered, as the audience may still experience the reverberations of the better-known version of the tradition, and it also applies to the characters themselves, who are often provided with a model of action for imitation or avoidance in their immediate contexts.
