Book Neurophysiological Monitoring During Intensive Care and Surgery

Download or read book Neurophysiological Monitoring During Intensive Care and Surgery written by N. Jollyon Smith and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2006 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title enables readers to understand how to undertake appropriate neurophysiological investigations in the critical care setting. The book addresses the scientific principles (biological and technological), recording techniques, the development of electrical potentials in normal subjects, and the ways these are disturbed by trauma, surgery and disease. The impact of digital technologies and the possibilities of quantification, statistical treatment and advanced signal processing techniques have enabled practitioners to work to more rigorous scientific standards. The increasing availability of such tools in daily clinical work means that patients can now benefit from investigations of known specificity and sensitivity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastery of ECG interpretation is achieved not only by pattern recognition, but equally importantly, by a clear, practical understanding of how electricity moves through the heart and how disruption of that movement manifests itself via ECG tracings. ECGs for Beginners, written by one of the world's most respected electrophysiologists with over 40 years experience of training clinicians, will provide cardiology and electrophysiology trainees with an easy to follow, step-by-step guide to the topic, thus enabling them to both understand and interpret ECG readings in order to to best manage their patients. Packed with over 250 high-quality ECG tracings, as well as management algorithms and key points throughout, every chapter also contains self-assessment questions, allowing the reader to test themselves on what they've just learnt. All kinds of arrhythmias will be covered, as well as morphological abnormalities such as atrial and ventricular problems. Importantly, normal ECG readings will be presented alongside abnormal readings, to best demonstrate how and why abnormalities occur. ECGs for Beginners is an essential purchase for all cardiology and electrophysiology trainees, as well as being a handy refresher guide for the experienced physician.

Book International Conference on Advancements of Medicine and Health Care through Technology 23 26 September 2009 Cluj Napoca Romania

Download or read book International Conference on Advancements of Medicine and Health Care through Technology 23 26 September 2009 Cluj Napoca Romania written by Simona Vlad and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Projections for advances in medical and biological technology will transform medical care and treatment. This in great part is due to the result of the interaction and collaboration between medical sciences and engineering. These advances will result in substantial progress in health care and in the quality of life of the population. Frequently however, the implications of technologies in terms of increasing recurrent costs, additional required support services, change in medical practice and training needs are underestimated. As a result, the widespread irrational use of te- nologies leads to a wastage of scarce resources and weakens health systems performance. To avoid such problems, a syst- atic and effective Health Technology System must be developed and introduced, requiring the support and commitment of decision makers of all levels of the health system. The MediTech2009 conference aims to provide a special opportunity for the Romanian professionals involved in basic - search, R&D, industry and medical applications to exchange their know-how and build up collaboration in one of the most human field of science and techniques. The conference is intended to be an international forum for researchers and practit- ners interested in the advance in, and applications of biomedical engineering to exchange the latest research results and ideas in the areas covered by the topics (and not only!). We believe the reader will find the proceedings an impressive document of progress to date in this rapidly changing field.

Book Hemodynamic Aspects of Cerebral Angiomas

Download or read book Hemodynamic Aspects of Cerebral Angiomas written by Werner Hassler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to date, the treatment of arteriovenous racemose angiomas of the brain remains unsatisfactory. Intraoperative hemorrhages, post-embolizational or postoperative deficits depending on the site and size of the A VM as well as inoperability of rare angioma types have promoted the technical improvement of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Nevertheless, some pathophysiological problems of A VM hemodynamics have not been solved. Many angiographical studies, observations during embolization and operation, dopplersonographical and other perfusion measurements provided some insight. Sufficient animal models have yet to be developed in order to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms. This monograph describes A V fistula models in cats and rats, both conventional and newly developed, which allow a better comparison with human cerebral angiomas than previous ones. The most important result is that the model of the breakthrough of arterial pressure waves into the capillaries following a failure of cerebrovascular regulation cannot be confirmed. Rather, according to the findings in precapillary vessels presented here, the regulation functions normally so that a breakdown of regulation cannot be responsible for global brain edema often seen after removal of angiomas. The regulation was demonstrated using different methods, most important of which being the CO response of 2 brain vessels to varying CO contents of the inhaled air. Angiographical, dopplersonographical and 2 perioperative dopplersonographical as well as intraoperative measurements of flow and pressure have been applied.
