Book excerpt: This work, first printed in 1895, showed the relationship that should exist between the church and the state at the present time, as proved by Holy Writ and the historical evidence of twenty-five centuries. Elder Jones was a powerful speaker and one of the strong voices in the revival of 1888 within the Adventist denomination. For a short time he was a Bible teacher at Healdsburg College. From 1897-1901 he was the editor of the Review and Herald, and he served on the staff of the Signs of the Times. Book Christians and Civil Government

Download or read book Christians and Civil Government written by J. Peter Hill and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil government is what we often call the state, which shares characteristics with other institutions. But unlike any other institution, the state can encourage or compel people to do certain things. It sometimes has the legitimate authority to deprive us of life, liberty, and property. The Bible tells us that it and our human governors are ordained by God. The key question this book asks is, “What has God taught us about the state?” The author also explores other questions, such as: Have we uncritically accepted ideas about civil government from our culture? Is our political identity adequately characterized as “conservative” or “progressive”—or should there be something more? What does the Old Testament teach us about civil government? What can we learn from Jesus’s relationship with the political powers of his day? This book also highlights the apostles’ interaction with local and Roman authorities and how the doctrinal statements of thoughtful Christians of the past should inform our views of civil government. Challenge political assumptions and ground your thinking in ways to honor God with the wisdom in Christians and Civil Government.

Book Freedom and the Construction of Europe Volume 1 Religious Freedom and Civil Liberty

Download or read book Freedom and the Construction of Europe Volume 1 Religious Freedom and Civil Liberty written by Quentin Skinner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom, today perceived simply as a human right, was a continually contested idea in the early modern period. In Freedom and the Construction of Europe an international group of scholars explore the richness, diversity and complexity of thinking about freedom in the shaping of modernity. Volume 1 examines debates about religious and constitutional liberties, as well as exploring the tensions between free will and divine omnipotence across a continent of proliferating religious denominations. Debates about freedom have been fundamental to the construction of modern Europe, but represent a part of our intellectual heritage that is rarely examined in depth. These volumes provide materials for thinking in fresh ways not merely about the concept of freedom, but how it has come to be understood in our own time.

Book excerpt: Congregations are made up of people with all sorts of theologies. Pastor Mike Slaughter even says that these can stand in the way of the church’s mission of social and personal holiness. But most people do not adopt a theology on purpose, mostly they merely breathe in the prevailing cultural air. The theology "de jour" seems to be Calvinist, with its emphasis on “the elect” and “other worldly salvation.” In fact, there is so much Calvinism saturating the culture, that some do not even know there is an alternative way of thinking about their faith. They don’t know where to go to find a viable option; they don’t even know the key words to search Google. So people are left thinking like Calvinists but living with a desire to change the world, offering grace and hope to hurting people in mission and ministry—loving the least, the last, and the lost. In other words, they are living like Wesleyans. This book shows what Calvinist and Wesleyans actually believe about human responsibility, salvation, the universality of God’s grace, holy living through service, and the benefits of small group accountability--and how that connects to how people can live. Calvinists and Wesleyans are different, and by knowing the difference, people will not only see the other benefits of Wesleyan theology but will be inspired to learn more. By knowing who they are as faithful people of God, they will be motivated to reach out in mission with renewed vigor. And they won’t be obstacles to grace and holiness, but they can be better disciples and advocates for Christ through service in this world.
