Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1879 edition. Excerpt: ... CAUSES OF ECCENTRICITY. We have continued talking about eccentric men, but we have not yet decided what it is which makes a man eccentric. Let us now come to the point. Some ministers have been reckoned eccentric simply and only because they have been natural. They have been themselves, and not copies of others: what was in them they have not restrained, but have given full play to all their powers. Take for instance John Berridge. Berridge was quaint by nature. In the former lecture I quoted purposely from his letters rather than from any of his sermons or di- . dactic works, because in a letter you see a man at ease. Berridge could not help being singular, for the form of his mind led him in that direction, and his bachelor life helped to develop his idiosyncrasies. His quaintness was all his own, and you see it in his household arrangements, as, for instance, when he says to a friend: "I am glad to see you write of a visit to Everton; we have always plenty of horse provender at hand; but unless you send me notice beforehand of your coming, you will have a cold and scanty meal; for we roast only twice in the week. Let me have a line, and I will give you the same treat I always gave to Mr. Whitefield, an eighteen-penny barn-door fowl; this will neither burst you nor ruin me; half you shall have at noon with a pudding, and the rest at night. Much grace and sweet peace be with yourself and partner; and the blessing of a new heart be with your children. With many thanks, I remain your affectionate servant, J. B." Nor is it less manifest in his hymns, even the most sober of them, as for instance in the well-known verse where he speaks of the saints in heaven and cries-- "Ah, Lord, with feeble steps I creep, And sometimes sing and sometimes...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eccentric Preacher To those who, on seeing a life of Lorenzo Dow, will complain of the absence of my par ticular account of his travels after 1816, we simply answer: No authentic records are extant excepting his journals; and these could not be procured on any terms favorable to their publi Cation. Many stories of Mr. Dow are floating in the public mind, which might have been col lected but it was thought best not to attempt their collection, as amidst such a traditionary chaos it would be utterly impossible to find the truth. Here the work is confined to an abridge ment of what is known. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Mervyn Himbury Principal and Preacher

Download or read book Mervyn Himbury Principal and Preacher written by Frank D. Rees and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mervyn Himbury migrated to Melbourne, Australia, in 1959. Through the sheer force of his personality, he led the transformation of a small, impoverished Baptist seminary to the premier Baptist institution in Australia. From the humble life of a Welsh mining village, Himbury proceeded to university studies in Cardiff and then Oxford. The story begins with the cultural and religious background of Himbury’s early life as a Welsh Baptist, exploring the distinctive ethos of the institutions where he studied during and just after the Second World War. Himbury’s lifelong passion for history is revealed through an examination of his Oxford thesis and subsequent publications about the puritan groups from which the Baptist movement arose. In Melbourne, he quickly became known as a brilliant preacher and media presenter. As professor and principal of Whitley College, Himbury’s central concern was ministerial education that would serve the churches in a rapidly changing world. For Himbury, the central task of ministry was preaching, and it is with this dimension of his life that the biography begins and concludes, drawing upon sermon records to demonstrate his commitment as a servant of the word of God.

Book excerpt: This book is about those preachers whom John Wesley called his Sons in the Gospel, their lives, their importance in the Methodist movement and their wider significance. It is about those who entered in Wesley's lifetime; they had begun their work by 1791. Because of their unity and dedication they had more effect than either of the Wesley brothers in the creation of the worldwide Methodist Church. This study analyses their lives and achievements. It provides new statistical information and brings to life the calling, travels, and everyday experience of individual preachers.
